WALKING FOR PLEASURE

WALKS PROGRAMME & NEWSLETTER

APRIL - JUNE 2016

www.eastsurreywalkers.org.uk Chairman’s Chatter This Chairman's Chatter may be shorter than some because, with my right hand immobilised in a splint, I am typing slowly with the left hand. My temporary problems and frustrations in carrying out the simplest tasks have given me a heightened respect for the tremendous effort and tremendous achievement of those who have to overcome permanent disabilities and still get on with their lives cheerfully. Our walks this year have started well despite a very wet and muddy January. A highlight of January as always was our New Year lunch attended by 76 members. This year the format was different and there were new ways of enjoying ourselves! –thanks to Pamela. In February a highlight was the Area AGM with Amanda collecting the Recruitment cup on our behalf, a deserved reward for her work as our Membership Secretary. Looking forward Liz and Nigel have arranged more walks than ever in our April-June quarter - a total of 60 - and I hope you all find walks that you enjoy. It's great that we have some new leaders and existing leaders taking on additional walks to make this possible. To show our appreciation of leaders we are running a draw each quarter with a leader drawn from the “hat” (aka Nigel’s laptop), winning a bottle of wine. The first draw in January was won by Anne S who received her prize after returning from a faraway holiday. I hope all leaders will help us fill our walks planner for July-September. We are slightly increasing the number of mid-weeks walks in the planner to try to spread the enthusiasm for the Wednesday morning walk that is regularly our most popular. As always we really welcome additional leaders, and if at all interested please talk to Liz, Nigel, or Helen. I have found that leading a walk is fairly straightforward, even with a large group. The unexpected, such as a hidden stile or overgrown path, is more often encountered beforehand when walking out the route. As well as the joys of walking in spring I'm looking forward to the Annual Dinner and then the Cream Tea. I won't be joining either of our group holidays this year but I'm glad to see that they have both received a lot of support. Our thanks to Judy and John, and Tony and Toni for organising these. Next year we also plan another group walk along a long distance trail. Accommodation for these needs to be booked this year, and we would welcome one or two members to help plan it: please contact me. This winter we have welcomed Stacey to the many who help keep the group up and running so well. Stacey is among other things an expert on social media, and is giving more knowledgeable help with FaceBook, StreetLife, etc – we wish her well. I hope that you have a great time walking with us this spring.. Enjoy your walking!

Ambles

We have a selection of short Ambles in the programme - these are typically circular, no more than 3 miles long and on the level, and are meant as introductory or social walks for those new to rambling, returning after illness or surgery or simply wanting a shorter, gentler walk for a change. They generally start (and end) at a venue where sociable cups of tea or coffee can be enjoyed. They take place on weekdays (other than Wednesdays) on a variable pattern so please refer to the Walks Programme for details.

East Surrey Walkers APR-JUN 2016 Page 3 of 20 Circular Walks Two circular walks are held every weekend. We have a full-day walk of around 10-12 miles, usually entailing bringing a picnic lunch, and a shorter walk of around 5-6 miles. The days for these long and short walks will alternate each weekend. On Wednesdays we also have a short 5-6 mile walk. The shorter walks are usually, but not always, in the morning. Long walks are generally led at a moderate, sometimes brisk, pace, with few stops other than for coffee and lunch. The short walks are a little slower than this, with a midway coffee break and a few short stops. The Wednesday morning walks are often followed by a gathering at the nearest pub for a drink or lunch. We also have occasional walks on other weekdays. Mid-week Linear Walks On these days we tackle Long-Distance Footpaths in convenient stages of usually 8 - 12 miles. We normally walk on the first and third Wednesday of each month, and unless otherwise indicated lunch is at a pub where food is available. Where possible, start and finish points are arranged where public transport is accessible. The organisers (Nick and Bryan) will endeavour to co-ordinate travel arrangements, so if you haven’t been on any of these walks recently please contact one of us a few days beforehand in case any changes have been made to the published details. If you wish to make your own way to the walk start, please make sure you are there before the stated time, and let Nick or Bryan know. Nick maintains an email list of the regular linear walkers and many of us rely on that for last minute updates. ~~~~

The start of the 1066 Harold's Way, Westminster Abbey © Bryan Petifer

This quarter we continue our walk along the 1066 Harold’s Way to the finish in Battle, . We start near Rochester Castle and head south across the

East Surrey Walkers APR-JUN 2016 Page 4 of 20 North Downs to Maidstone, then on via Staplehurst and Sissinghurst to Bodiam Castle. The final stage takes us via Seddlescombe to Battle and the site of the Battle of Hastings. To finish the quarter we continue south towards the sea on the Bexhill Link of the 1066 Country Walk, before tackling the main part of the route from Rye to Pevensey in the next (July to September) quarter. Nick Walks Report We are delighted to present to you our Walks Programme for April to June 2016. We have an exciting expanded programme of about 60 walks this quarter. This is more than ever before and it includes walks on some Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays as well as our usual days. Please browse through it, make a note of your favourites and come along. We ask you to arrive 15 minutes before the walk is scheduled to start so that the leader can take your details, introduce the walk and leave promptly.

This is all made possible by ESW members offering to lead. If you do not already lead please think about doing so – we would appreciate your help towards providing a full programme. Liz

East Surrey Walkers APR-JUN 2016 Page 5 of 20 DIARY DATES Annual Dinner - Wednesday, April 13th The Annual Dinner at The Bakery promises to be a very enjoyable event. The Bakery is well known for its delicious food and delightful atmosphere. Numbers are a record high of 59 at present but we still have room for more. We would especially like to encourage new members to join us. Don't be shy! Come along and enjoy a splendid evening among new friends and fellow ramblers. You will be made very welcome.

The Bakery has a very good reputation, and will be providing a three course meal and coffee for us at £25 per head, not including drinks. Full details of how to book are on the website. Annual Walk with London Blind Ramblers The Annual Walk with the London Blind Ramblers will be on Sunday May 8th starting at 10.30 from railway station and finishing at the British Legion. Cream Tea Sunday 5 June Once again, Di and John Nathan have very kindly offered to host the popular Cream Tea in their beautiful garden at 39 Detillens Lane, , RH8 0DH. We will be making a modest charge of £3 per person on the day, to cover costs.

There is no limit on numbers as John and Di firmly believe all members should feel welcome to attend, and cosy is good. Umbrellas may be handy if it's wet!

Di and John obviously don't own enough outdoor seating for everybody, so please bring your own chairs if you can.

Numbers may not be limited, but Pamela and Angie do need to know how many are coming in order to cater - so please put your name on the list by emailing [email protected]

Any offers of home-made cakes would be very much appreciated - please let Pamela know your signature cake - ESW Great British Bake Off !!!! Everyone is a winner!!

ADVANCE NOTICES Summer BBQ Rosie has again kindly offered her lovely garden for our Barbeque which will be on Sunday 7th August.

• NOTE: the distance listed is an approximation for guidance, NOT a guarantee of the actual length of the walk 'on the day'.

Notes about the Walks: Arrive at least 15 minutes before the stated time - walks start promptly. Call the leader if you would like more information about the walk or meeting place, or, in case of severe weather, phone before 8am to check arrangements For other than half day walks and linear walks (unless otherwise stated) please bring a picnic lunch to eat in the open air. Everyone participating in Ramblers walks and other activities does so at their own risk. Dogs , under control, are welcome on our walks at the leader's discretion, except where noted. Please make sure that you are fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted. Most walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or café break. Leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk Leader in advance. For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk Leader .

Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.

MEETING POINTS When on-line you can click the link after the OS Grid Reference (GR) - e.g. TQ426349 - to view a map of the start location.

Post Codes : Following member requests, we are now including the nearest Post Code along with the Grid Reference of the car park for the start of each walk. However, it should be noted that this will be the Post Code of the nearest building to the car park, and therefore may not be as accurate as the Grid Reference for country car parks.

For the Wednesday LINEAR walks, always confirm the meeting and transport details with Nick or Bryan beforehand , in case arrangements have changed.
