-3- 1966 Baseball Outlook ''We're not going to club any team into submission with powerful bats," said

J.D. Anderson as he sub~ted to his first press meeting, "but we have speed and depth on our side and we'll be a running t-ell.mand a defensive team." Anderson, who replaces the now retired Mon Whitford, is optimistic about his first panther team listing pluses in most spots and only doubts about two spots ••• pitching and first base. The little southpaw master, Tom Simpson, who held the North Central Conference in the palm of his hand for three years, has graduated. SCI became accustomed to

Simpson 1s masterful touch and because of this Anderson is a bit worried. He has the veteran Phil Johnson, 6-4 righthander, back and letterman Frank Huston, but not one lefty with any experience. The search is on in earnest with outfielder Leo Hensley even taking a crack at it. First base is not in that kind of trouble. Anderson has a more pleasant problem. Three cand:Ldates of equal skills with letterman Larry Joens leading the race ove r Dave Lister and John Kneeland, both sophomores.

The rest of the picture is more roses than gloom, and the defense should sparkle.

''We 're pretty well set in the infield, outside of first, 11 Anderson said. "We have veterans in Jim Videtich at short, John Nelson at third and Ron Morse at second plus an outstanding sophomore in Ron Foell at second . In addition, Morse can play third.

"Our outfield is good . We have three strong arms in Bill Strottman, Terry Fox and Fred Picket plus Hensley and sophomore Mike Culver. "

Anderson's big problem may be deciding which to use and pitching will determine that. He can get seven lefthanders in against right handed pitching, and seven against the opponent 1s southpaws, without falling off in quality.

Catching is sound with veteran Ben Halupnik back and standout sophomores in Dennis

Cryer and Jerry Tarkett, either one good enough to push Halupnik out if he fails to hit . ''We should have a good ball club," Anderson says,"if we can execute the little things that so often make the difference between fair and good." -4- This could be the most versatile SCI team in years . Anderson has five top flight outfields. Strottman, an All-American in junior college, and Fox, both football players have strong arms and speed to burn. Hensley, the best of last year's crop, returns with just as Imlch speed. Picket, slated for outfield duty because of his potent bat, has an effective arm in SCI's short left field garden.

It ~ll comes back to pitching. "I may not be as worried over the pitching as I should be," Anderson said.

"Our defense is good enough to go get the ball if the chuckers get it over. 11 Johnson is the ace of the staff after posting a 3-1 record last year and an excellent 2. 00 ERA .

Huston was effective, but got little chance due to the weather that rained out nru.ch of the Panther schedule and left the rest for Simpson am Johnson to mop up . Anderson feels sophomore Dennis Tostenson is the next in line, but he too is a right hander. Bill Padget, another sophomore, was impressive late in the early drills and may be the southpaw answer. Hensley could be used in short relief.

A surprise may be forthcoming from letterman Virgil Goodrich. Goodrich lettered as an outfielder last year and swung a good bat, but is trying to make it on the hill

this year. Biography of Head Baseball Coach J .D. Anderson

James D. Anderson (he prefers to be called J.D.) is in his first year as head baseball coach at SCI, replacing Mon Whitford, who held forth for 37 seasons and 302 wins .

Anderson is a native of Collinsville, Ill. , where he lettered three times in baseball and basketball, twice in football and track. He attended Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, graduating in 1952 with a B.S. degree and getting his M.A . there in 1961. He coached baseball at Key West High School, Florida, from 1956-1960, winning state titles in 1958 and 1959. In 1961 he moved to Nothem Illinois University and coached gymnastics , tennis and cross country and assisted in baseball. · He1s married and has one daughter. -5- 1965 BASEBALL STATISTICS

-10- 1966 SCI Track Roster

NAME EVENTS HT. wr. CLASS HOMET

-11- 1966 SCI Track Outlook The individual stars that put SCI in a place of prominence the last two years are gone . George McBee; Mike Long, Doug Larson and the rest have graduated. All were SCI record holders.

So where does SCI rank this year? "Better than last year, 11 said head coach Jack Jennett. "We will miss those individual stars, but we have more depth and balance this spring and if a few men come through in the relays we'll be tough.

The Panthers are not without the individual stars, either. There's Bill Rauhauser, the junior from Ruthven, who has ruled the roost in the long jump and triple jump in the North Central Conference since the day he became eligible for varsity competition. He won both events last year, both indoors and out, in the NCC and has had a brilliant winter session, going 46-7 in the triple jump. Then there are hurdlers Ron Gerard and Mark Sanborn. Gerard won both conference indoor hurdle events a year ago and the outdoor highs. Sanborn, a sophomore, has split even with Gerard indoors.

''We' re stronger, 11 Jennett said, "because our distance men have improved their performances. Welre the same in the sprints and better off in the field events with most of our men back." Two men figure as major keys to a successful season. One is the veteran Rich Engel. An established middle distance star, Engel could make the SCI mile and medley relay teams outstanding if he attains good condition following a wrestling injury.

Sprinter Bob Ruchti is the other key. He's slated to anchor the short relay events but has been bothered during the indoor campaign with a bad back. Jennett hopes he can shake the problem outdoors and away from the steep indoor banks.

Jennett, also, has a word of warning. '1We 1 ll have to be tougher to hold our own. The competition is just that much tougher this year." The biggest weaknesses come in the half mile and the discus and javelin where only Gordon Scoles returns.

-12- SCI' s high jumpers have to improve says Jennett. They did not have a good indoor season and must come on to give SCI the balance across the board Jennett feels they must have for conference title hopes . J'ennett spotlighted the bright spots. "Our miles and two milers have had some good days, but must become more con-

" sistent," he said. "Ron Brinkert, Bill Taylor and Ron Toyne have come a. 1-ong way already. They were up and down during the indoor season, but fortunately for us,

one was always up when the other two were down. 11 Jennett is pleased with the progress of pole vaulters Jim Dlouhy and Don McKinney. "These two battled each other all season long indoors with McKinney getting the indoor mark . That competition has mde both of them better vaulters," he said. Rauhauser gets good support in both his specialties from John Lounsberry and Dick Lynch and Lynch, last year, was a stronger perfcrmer outdoors than in.

SCI 1s weakness in the half mile event can mean double trouble with the advent of outdoor meets . The two mile relay, Jennett feels, is one of the team's biggest

weaknesses right now. A year ago the Panthers finished second in the North Central Conference but

they may be better suited to battle South Dakota U. and South D-akota State this spring with their balanced attack.

Biography of Head Track Coach Jack Jennett

Jack Jennett, a former track and football star at Drake, is in his third year as head track coach at SCI . A native of Sac City, Ia., Jennett starred at Drake in

the early 50 1s, captaining the Bulldog grid team in 1952 . He came to SCI from Buena Vista where he served as head track and football coach. Prior to that he spent six years as track and assistant football coach at Morningside . He coached the same sports at Lake City, winning the state indoor and outdoor track titles in Class B competition in 1955. He's mrried ann has three daughters.

-13- 43rd Annual SCI Arthur Dickinson Relays

Nearly 1,000 college and high school athletes are expected for the 43rd running of the SCI Arthur Dickinson Relays on April 23 at o. R. Latham Stadium. •. Long one of the largest athletic events in Northeast Iowa, the Dickinson Relays drew over 900 runners last year with the prep athletes erasing three records and tying a fourth mark. College runners set three new marks. The biggest thrashing of the record books took place in 1958 when a

lightning fast track led to 14 new marks. Weather cooperating, few will be surprised if this year's attack does not approach the 1958 standards.

The Relay story began in 1922 (May 6) when the first event was held under the name of the Northeast Iowa Interscholastic Track and Field Meet at the old fairgrounds. Originated as a high school meet by former Dean of

Students Paul Bend.er, the first meet attracted over 200 athletes from 19 schools. The site of the Relays was switched to the former athletic field near the Woman's Gymnasium in 1924. Colleges made their first appearance that year when SCI and Simpson staged a dual meet in connection with the regular program. But, it was 1934 before a collegiate section was put into full swing.

In 1927 the name 'Teachers College Relays 1 was adopted · and 1n 1928 what was to become o. R. Latham Stadium housed the event for the first time. In 1961 ISTC becama SCI, an:i the name of the meet was changed again. Since •, 1963 it has officially been known as the SCI Arthur Dickinson Relays, honoring the long-time track coach who retired in 1962. The Relays has traditionally been staged on the third Saturday of April, and now ranks as the largest and most colorful spring sports event in Northeast Iowa. It has operated continually since its inception with the exception of the war years. -14- OUTDOOR TRACK RECORDS BY SCI ATHLETES Track Events

-25- 1966 Tennis Outlook

Before Pete Mazula could string the first net up and open drills for the 1966

SCI tennis season the bottom had already fallen out of his squad. Four of five returning lettermen were not on the scene. The results leave an aura of mystery as to what the Panthers will be able to accomplish this spring. Mazula, in his second year as head coach, is not the pessimistic type, however.

He molded a 5-5 season last year with an inexperienced team, produced the North

Central Conference's singles champion and had his team in second place in the league title race.

The lone returnee is Norval Hills, in fact the lone returnee from last year's squad. He played as the team's number five man last spring.

Gone are Lew Eells, number one man and NCC singles champion. He transfered to Iowa .

Mike Schmicher, number two man, transfered to Iowa State. Number three Charles

McGreevey has left school and number four Charles Matterson has failed to report .

Number six man, Jim Lewallen has graduated.

Early drills have moved Bill Forsberg, sophomore from Waterloo, into prominence, according to Mazula . Others showing promise are juniors Eugene Wehrheim and Mike

Cahill.

Mazula feels the team will be better balanced than last year with enough sophomore: on hand to push for starting roles .

Biography of Head Tennis Coach Pete Mazula

Pete Mazula, in his second year as ha.ad tennis coach, is no stranger to the

Panther family. He 1s been a member of the faculty since 1949, serving as the director of the driver's education classes at Price Laboratory School and at the college since his arrival.

Mazula, a graduate of Cortland, N. Y., State Teachers College in 1942, received his M.A. degree from Teacher's College, Columbia University in 1946 and his E. D. D. from Columbia in 1954. Mazula served as athletic director and tennis coach at the School of the Ozarks, Point Lookout, Missouri, from 1946 throught 1948 . He is married and the father of four sons and one daughter. - ?h- 1966 Golf Outlook

Two goals ha~e been set f or t he Panther golf team and head coach Chuck Patten feels his team can reach both if they are willing to pay the price in practice and if they get a break from the weatherman. The first goal is a team championship in the North Central Conference, the second gaining a representative in the NCAA national meet through qualification in the Midwest

Regional meet to be hosted by SCI . Patten has five good reasons for his optimism and all are lettermen.

He returns his starting team and has four outstanding prospects ready to make a run at one of the starting spots .

Heading the list is former NCC champion Jerry Heinz, a senior from Waterloo.

Also back are lettertren Jerry Askam, Bill Donohue, Allan Hjelle and Mike Kayser.

Patten did lose three talented perforrrers, but only one of them had played for

SCI. George Beebe, the number two man last year, graduated. '1We lost a pair of good ones in Al Bailey, who transfered to Iowa, and Gary Snyder to grades," Patten said.

"They would have helped us. Bailey was our top qualifyer in fall tryouts, Snyder Third.

"Basically, we 're back with the same team we had last year and if they improve as they should," Patten added, "we 111 be .tougher than last season when we posted a 10-2 dual record."

Top newcorrers are Gary Brower and Bill Fleischman, a pair of juniors who looked impressive last fall. Patten feels Brower needs only competition to be among the best while Fleischman, a strong hitter off the tee, must gain consistency. Brower and Fleischman plus Terry Lester and Larry Leutzinger could make the difference in a good and an outstanding year if they can push the men ahead of them according to Patten.

Biography of Head Golf Coach Chuck Patten

Chuck Patten, himself a former letterwinner in wrestling and golf at SCI, is in his second year as head man of both sports.

A native of Waterloo, where he competed at East High, Patten graduated from SCI i n 1961, earned his M.A . at Oregon, taught two years in the West Coast and returned in 1964. -27- PRIMARY PRESS, RADIO & TV OUI'IEl'S
