Dr. Domeracki - Spring Testing at WCCHS Spring is testing season for schools and that was no exception at West Community High School. This past Tuesday, April 19, seniors were off campus, but freshmen, sophomores, and especially juniors were demonstrating their readiness for college through standardized testing.

The State Board of Education planned to provide the SAT college entrance exam for all juniors this spring. After implementing the new PARCC assessment last year, the Illinois State Board of Education began the process of seeking a new college entrance exam to replace the ACT. Board selected the SAT exam to administer to high school juniors beginning in the spring of 2016. The SAT was chosen as the State Board believed it was more aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards, and is a better tool to measure what students are learning to determine college readiness. Foreign Language Honor Society Inductees At the induction ceremony on April 14, 2016, ninety students from West Chicago Community High School were recognized and honored for French, German and Spanish literacy.

Criteria for acceptance into the honor societies include overall subject GPA of 4.0; two years of language study at West Chicago Community High School; All A's in the language for second level students; one more A than B for third and fourth year students; and a commitment to the study of the language, including continuing a third or fourth year of study or providing tutorial assistance.

Creative Writers Excel at Literary Festival Student authors from West Chicago Community High School earned awards at the Upstate Eight Literary Festival earlier this month. Placing first in short story was senior Jacob Vogt of Winfield.

The Upstate Eight Literary Festival is both a writing competition and day-long series of writing workshops. Only 40 students from each Upstate Eight conference school were invited to attend the festival based on their submissions in the categories of poetry, short fiction, dramatic scene, personal essay, and descriptive sketch. Vogt's work was judged against more than 130 submissions in the short story category.

Other students recognized at the festival include Brandon Morss (sophomore, West Chicago), second and third place in poetry; Barbara Richert (senior, West Chicago), third place in poetry; Brandon Perez (senior, West Chicago), Honorable Mention in rap; and More...

Students Win Journalism Awards West Chicago Community High School students won awards in the Quill and Scroll 2016 International Writing, Photo and Multimedia Contest. A total of 1,938 entries were submitted in all divisions, with a total of 225 entries selected as National winners and 279 individual student

winners.

Senior Kyle Paup, editor in chief, of the school newspaper, the Wildcat Chronicle, was a National winner for two of his news stories, "Honored alumnus discusses lasting impressions of high school" and "District among three chosen for e-learning program." Of the 176 student entries for news, only 20 winners were named, and Paup won two of those 20. This is not Paup's first time winning from Quill and Scroll. As a sophomore he was also a National winner. Paup has worked for the Wildcat Chronicle his sophomore and senior years. The paper did not operate during his junior year. More...

Musical "The Drowsy Chaperone" April 28-30 Wego Drama at West Chicago Community High School continues their 2015-16 Season with the wonderfully comedic musical "The Drowsy Chaperone." The story is of a man in a chair remembering a bygone era and that special wedding day. It is satirical of our lives today and in the past. This TONY Award-Winning musical is full of amazing characters and is a love-letter to Broadway.

Cast member Megan Graal shares, "The Drowsy Chaperone" is "...a fulfilling show that makes us all laugh a great deal."

Cast member Robert Bradley says "I love this show. It really is a show that is for anyone who listens to a tune to forget the troubles of the day, sings along to the car radio, and dances around in the living room." More...

Sophomores Challenged to Change the Future For the fourth year, WCCHS language arts teachers Amanda Cardenas, Tara DeLeon, Patrice Dobry and Kyle Etheridge have challenged sophomore English 2 students to change the future through a service learning project. Each student will present the project they have been working on during 2nd semester on Tuesday, May 3, 2016.

The class of 2018 was challenged to make an impact that would change the future for people in our community and make important strides towards Social Justice. Students were invited to research an important social issue that is of personal value; topics such as homelessness, hunger, poverty, animal cruelty, immigration, human trafficking, discrimination and bullying prevention and many more have been researched and investigated in order to influence a positive change in that field.

The community is invited to learn about and celebrate how the sophomores at WCCHS have come together with one voice to speak up for change. The event will run like a

Athletic Department Wildcat Nation,

Spring has sprung. It took a while but we are well into our spring schedule and enjoying warmer weather! The athletic office wants to thank all the coaches, kids and parents for being patient with indoor facility use and the time adjustments that had to be made because of inclement weather.

Please take the time and look at our athletic schedule and come out and watch some of the games that take place right after school and on the weekends. and play at Pioneer Park and of course , , girls soccer and take place right here at the high school. Be our guest and enjoy some good competition. Good luck to all of our spring sports!!

"Find Your Voice"

The West Chicago Community High School Language Arts Division promotes student engagement and empowerment as captured in its motto, "Find Your Voice." In that spirit, please recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of some of our most committed Wildcats, members of Creative Writing Club, WEGO Drama, and the Wildcat Chronicle. They have developed their skills and interests through language arts coursework and extracurriculars:

Creative Writing Members of the WCCHS Creative Writing club, sponsored by English teachers Amanda Cordes and Tara Deleon qualified to compete at the Upstate Eight Literary Festival this April. Senior Jacob Vogt placed first in the short story category for his work, "Pandora," that creates a novel post apocalyptic world in which the protagonist, twelve-year-old Sasha, is transformed into a being who is more than human. On Saturday April 30th, College of DuPage will be hosting, STEM-CON. This is a free interactive fair that showcases the multitude of

opportunities in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The fair is targeted towards middle school and high school students and their families.

Some highlights of the fair include speakers Olympia LePoint and Diandra Leslie- Pelecky, presentations on cryogenics and the physics of flight, a weather balloon launch, interactive displays and hands-on exhibits. Ms. LePoint is a former rocket scientist for The Boeing Company who helped launch the Endeavour, Discovery, Columbia and Atlantis Space Shuttles. She now spends her time public speaking and aiding individuals who pursue STEM fields. Ms. Leslie-Pelecky began her career as a professor in the Department of More...

May 1 is Alumni Nomination Deadline Community High School District 94 is seeking nominees for its 2016 Distinguished Alumni award. The purpose of the program is to recognize West Chicago Community High School graduates whose accomplishments serve as an inspiration for others to dream and achieve.

A nominee must be a graduate of Community High School District 94 at least 10 years prior to nomination; be distinguished by accomplishments in academics, the arts, athletics, business, community service, the environment, human rights, justice, medicine, research, or science that inspire others to dream and achieve; demonstrate a strength of character and service to humanity that goes beyond the boundary of career; be available by phone, email, or in-person for interview by the Selection Committee; and attend the Distinguished Alumni Award ceremony and interact with WCCHS students in a class forum, seminar, or assembly. WeGo Run 5K/10K and Kids Races May 1 One of our feeder districts, District 33, is hosting their 12th Annual WeGo Run on Sunday, May 1 at Leman Middle School, 238 E. Hazel St., West Chicago. The 5K/10K starts at 8:00 a.m. There is also a 1 Mile Kids Run and a Kiddie Dash.

McDonalds at 89 W. North Avenue, West Chicago.

Like they did last year, teachers will be working behind the counter at McDonald's serving students, families and friends, earning money for Club Green. Special performances from student groups are being planned.
