Greetings, Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

Last weekend, I was away from St. James for the celebration of the Rite of Installation of a Pastor for Father Dan Pisano, the new pastor of Epiphany of Our Lord Parish, Moorefield (Hardy County, WV), St. Mary Parish, Petersburg (Grant County, WV), and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Franklin (Pendleton County, WV). All three of these parishes are small in terms of numbers, but each of them comprises the entire geographical territory of their respective counties. I have visited these parishes before, but being there with Father Dan as he begins his pastoral ministry, I was overwhelmed by the enormity of the task of evangelization with which he is faced. I pray he will seek and receive the assistance he will need on every level to continue (or to begin) that important work!

The following day, Monday, October 19, we celebrated the Memorial of Saints Jean de Brebeuf, Isaac Jogues, and Compan- ions, the Jesuit martyrs who perished while engaged in the work of evangelization among the Mohawk, Huron, and Iroquois peoples in the 17th Century. Though they died as martyrs, and so in human estimation appear to have failed, these valiant missionaries were not unsuccessful. As evidence of this, we could point to the example of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American to be canonized by the Church. Born in the Mohawk village of Ossernon, New York—present-day Auriesville, New York—St. Kateri can certainly be considered as part of the fruit of those earlier evangelization efforts among the Mohawks since she was born in the very same village in which three of the Jesuit missionaries were martyred for their faith.

In the Huron Relation of 1635, which is an account of the French Jesuits’ missionary activity written to their Jesuit superiors in France, St. Jean de Brebeuf wrote of their struggles and triumphs. He records the response of one of the Huron elders during one of their catechetical sessions: “Let him, who will go to the fire of hell; I, for my part, want to go to heaven.” St. Jean de Brebeuf continues: “All the others agreed with him and making the same reply beg[ged] us to point out the way, to clear away the stones, the trees, and the thickets which might stop them.”

As baptized Christians, all of us are called to share in the priestly, prophetic, and kingly office of Jesus Christ. And so, at the center of each of our lives as Christians, there should be a concern to share the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with others and to “clear away the stones, the trees, and the thickets” that get in the way of our effective announcement of that Good News.

Our sinfulness can hinder our effective announcement of the Gospel to others (i.e., evangelization), hence the need for ongoing conversion in each of our lives, but also by the sinfulness of others, including those we are evangelizing. Thus our efforts must always begin with and be accompanied by our humble and fervent prayer and effort toward ongoing personal conversion, as well as prayer for the conversion of those to whom we are seeking to share the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Often—unintentionally—we cast obstacles before others in their life of faith. In fact, that is the literal meaning of the word “scandal,” which is “a stumbling block” (from the Latin “Scandulum”) that is placed before another. Those stumbling blocks may be our sins—setting a bad moral example that leads others into sin or causing them to lose heart—or they may be in the form of unnecessary expectations placed on others that even the Gospel itself does not require of them, not unlike the early Jewish Christian communities who insisted on circumcision for Gentiles who converted to Christianity. After a period of controversy, recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, circumcision was deemed an unnecessary burden to place on Gentile converts.

As a more common modern example, we may be convinced of the value of daily (weekday) Mass, of praying a daily , or some other devotional practice that appeals to us, which are certainly good things and are to be commended. However, in our zeal, we can place unnecessary expectations and demands on others if we insist on them as necessary, even though neither the Gospel nor the teachings of the Church require them of us as a daily practice. This is not an exhortation to mediocrity. Rather, it is an exhortation to charity toward one another and of not demanding of others that which even the Gospel does not demand. This same caution can apply in many areas of our life in society and in the Church.

It is for very good reason that St. Paul urges his disciples to “not go beyond what is written so that none of you will be inflated with pride in favor of one person over against another (1Cor. 4:6).” In many areas of the Christian life, Christians are called to discern their conscience in freedom. Where the Gospel and the Church’s are silent or make no firm admonition or prohibition, it is important to leave individual consciences to discern in freedom. If we do not abide by St. Paul’s admonition, we can end up preaching ourselves and our ideology or opinion, rather than Christ.

In this regard, I am reminded of an old saying of uncertain origin that is sometimes attributed to St. Augustine: “In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; in all things, charity.”

As baptized Christians, we should be eager and excited to share the Gospel with others, to “point out the way” to Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. However, to do so effectively, we must be willing “to clear away the stones, the trees, and the thickets” that stand in the way. Let us pray for one another, that each of us may be willing to clear away everything in our own lives that impedes that great mission of evangelization to which we are all called by our baptism into Jesus Christ.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Father Leonard October 25, 2020 - 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3
