Nature Walk- Oct 1st For the nature buffs in the crowd, we’ve got a special treat lined up for you. Roll out of bed early Saturday morning and come along to explore the flora, fauna and avian inhabitants of the Amherst Bird Sanctuary, 3 km from Wandlyn. Please pre-register.

Shuttle Bus- Sept 30th Wine & Cheese Reception A shuttle bus will be available for Conference participants attending the Wine and Cheese reception at the Amherst Library Friday night. A bus will transport people from the hotels to the library, and back at the end of the evening. The bus will be leaving the Wandlyn starting at 7:45 pm, with stops at the Super 8 and Comfort Inn, as necessary. Return trips will begin approximately 9:30 pm.

Internet Wireless internet is available at the Comfort Inn and the Amherst Library. The Super 8 has high speed internet, and the Wandlyn Inn has dial-up internet service.

Session #1 Tell Me a Story! Storytelling 1:00-4:00 pm Location: Amherst Library

Presenter: Angela Reynolds, Children’s and Young Adult Librarian, Annapolis Valley Regional Library

Would you like to use more storytelling in your storytimes? Have you ever wanted to spook kids at Hallowe’en with ghost stories? Then this is for you! Angela will share tips and tales to get you started and to build your confidence - and your repertoire. From easy participation tales to felt-boards, you'll sharpen your storytelling skills in this workshop. Participants will learn several stories to take home and use. Be prepared to use your voice, your creativity… and your sillies.

Angela Reynolds is a children's librarian and storyteller new to from Portland, Oregon. In Oregon, she taught storytelling to child care providers and librarians, and was co-producer for an annual storytelling festival in Newport, OR. She has studied storytelling with Margaret Read MacDonald, Gay Ducey, Elizabeth Ellis, and more, and has been listening to stories from around the world!

Staff members in all types of libraries are often called upon to manage projects. This half day pre-conference session will introduce you to the principles of project management. Learn tips on how to stay focused on the project's priorities and objectives, and how to accomplish your goals within the required timelines.

Donna Hendy is a Human Resource Development consultant with the NS Department of Education. She has been providing training and development opportunities to provincial government employees for 13 years. At the NSLA conference in 1990 at White Point, Donna presented a training session on "Street Smart from 9 to 5".

Darlene has worked for the Halifax Public Library for 18 years, in many positions including youth services programmer, IT Facilitator, Gates Project Trainer, Branch Supervisor, and Books-by-Mail Supervisor. She currently works at the Keshen Goodman Public Library as the Branch Operations Supervisor and is also Customer Contact Communications Facilitator for the library system.

Workshop #2 Local Author Reading- Harry Thurston 9:00-10:15 am

Local author Harry Thurston is a freelance writer and poet. Among his many works, Island of the Blessed and The Nature of Shorebirds:nomads of the wetlands, won the Evelyn Richardson Prize for non-fiction, and Tidal Life: a Natural History of the , won the Atlantic Booksellers Choice Award and the Evelyn Richardson Prize. His latest book, A Place Between the Tides was nominated for the 2005 Writers’ Trust Award, and the Dartmouth Book Award.

Harry will read from A Place Between the Tides, as well as his latest work in progress, a book-length poem, entitled A Ship Portrait, A Novella-in-Verse. Autographed books will be available for purchase following the reading.

Workshop #3 LBANS- Library Advocacy Now! Pt I 9:00-10:15 am

Presenters: Wendy Newman, Librarian in Residence, Faculty of Information Studies, University of Toronto, and Ella Nason, Assistant Director of Public Library Service.

Library Advocacy Now! is CLA's highly-rated interactive training program for anyone who cares about libraries. The goal of the program is to encourage trustees, friends, library workers, library users, and others to speak out for libraries; to understand and work more collaboratively with politicians and other decision-makers; and to lobby more effectively in the constantly-changing political environment. Every trustee and every staff member can be a library advocate!

Wendy Newman is Librarian in Residence, Faculty of Information Studies, University of Toronto, where she is teaching the school's first Advocacy course. Wendy is the former CEO, Brantford Public Library, and has been a member of the National Broadband Task Force, the Blue Ribbon Panel on Smart Communities, and the Board of Governors of the Media Awareness Network. She is a former President of the Canadian Library Association, and a popular presenter at library conferences.

Ella Nason is Assistant Director of New Brunswick Public Library Service. She was one of two New Brunswick volunteers for the Atlantic Provinces Library Association who traveled the province to present Library Advocacy Now! in 2001.

Keynote Address: Larry Moore, President, OLA 10:45-11:45 am “The Partnership: An Idea for our Times”

Larry Moore has been involved with the library world for many years. He grew up in various parts of , and began his library career as a high school librarian in Ontario.

He completed his MLIS in 1967 at the University of Michigan. Mr. Moore has worked as a university professor teaching in the MLIS degree at Queen’s University, as well as having been involved in consulting to schools and libraries.

He has volunteered as a councillor for the Ontario Library Association/ School Libraries Division, as well as been president of the Ontario School Library Association for two terms, and president of the Ontario Library Association. He has been the Executive Director of OLA since 1984. Mr. Moore enjoys attending artistic events, particularly the symphony, dance and theatre, as well as being a Blue Jays fan.

In his address for the LBANS/ NSLA 2005 Conference he will discuss aspects of the developing network of provincial and territorial library associations. The Partnership is a network of the provincial and territorial library associations of Canada but it is unlike any co-operative venture undertaken in the library world. It gives local leadership a way to have national impact with very little growth in scarce human and financial resources. The energy and potential of this grass roots venture is one of the great stories in library leadership in this country.

A year ago NSLA members voted to join in the Campaign for the World's Libraries and spearhead efforts to introduce the @ your library brand in Nova Scotia. This session will report on work done on this initiative during the year, and will introduce delegates to the concepts and practical applications of the brand.

Trudy Amirault is the CEO of Western Counties Regional Library and the current President of the Nova Scotia Library Association. Her professional interests include community development, uses of information technology in libraries, partnerships, and promotion of libraries. She was the 2002 recipient of the Outstanding Public Library Service Award presented by the Canadian Association of Public Libraries. ______5 Sharing for Success LBANS/ NSLA 2005

Elaine MacLean is a Research Services Librarian at the Angus L. Macdonald Library of St. Francis Xavier University. She has more than 25 years of experience working in libraries in a variety of capacities, including systems and technical services. As an associate of the Coady International Institute since 1999, she has a particular interest in the role of library workers worldwide. Elaine is a past-president of the Atlantic Provinces Library Association and is currently serving on the executive council of the Canadian Library Association.

Mary Landry has been the Public Services Manager at Eastern Counties Regional Library since 2002.

Workshop #5 YA Author Reading- James Heneghan 1:30-2:45 pm

James Heneghan is one of today's foremost authors of fiction for children and young adults. His books, acclaimed for their realistic portrayals and action-packed adventures, often tell the stories of teenagers struggling to overcome personal difficulties.

An award-winning author, James has won the Shelia A. Egoff B.C. Children's Literature Award three times for Flood, Wish Me Luck and The Grave. In addition, Wish Me Luck was nominated for a Canadian Governor General's Award and The Grave and Torn Away were selected as American Library Association (ALA) Best Books for Young Adults.

James will be speaking about how to get reluctant readers to read as well as reading from his latest books. Autographed books will be available for purchase following the reading.

Linda and Steve will provide an informaiton session on the preparation, procedures and pleasures of hosting a writer-in-residence in your library. . Sheldon Currie is a retired English professor from St Francis Xavier University. He was the fiction editor of the Antigonish Review for 20 years, as well as the Writer-in-Residence at Pictou-Antigonish Library for one year. His novel Down the Coal Town Road, was nominated for the 2003 Dartmouth Book Award for Fiction, and he has previously won the Breton Books Award for fiction.

Linda Arsenault has been a Children's / Youth / Community Services librarian as well as the Program Librarian with Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library since 1982. She completed her MLIS from Dalhousie University, as well as a BEd. She says she left the classroom for the quiet life in the Library!

Steve MacLean left the commercial world to attend NSCC for the Library Technician Program. He has been the Programming /Outreach Assistant with PARL since 2000. He is an avid photographer and visual artist. He says he is a man on a mission when it comes to programming on a shoestring!

Workshop #8 Satellite Sites~the view from the Front Line 3:15-4:30 pm

Presenters: Leslie Carruthers, Coordinator of Outreach Services, ECRL, Tracey Mahoney, Recreation Programmer, Antigonish County Recreation, Daphne Cragg, Administrator Adult & Outreach Services, CEHRL

This presentation will offer views of alternative outreach services. One will be an overview of the mobile rural services offered at Eastern Counties Regional Library, from its beginnings in 2000 following the demise of the Bookmobile service, to its current role serving 9 locations and expanded to include Books by Mail and House Holders services. In 2001 the Pictou-Antigonish Library launched a pilot program called Rural Library Access site. Through a partnership with the public library, Antigonish County Recreation and the Strait Regional School Board , the Rural Access site has become a valuable asset to the community with many benefits.

Leslie Carruthers graduated from St. Francis Xaxier University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education. She taught and substituted in the public school system in and Nova Scotia for approximately 20 years, then moved to the field of Adult Literacy in the mid-90's, where she taught Adult Education, and subsequently became the Coordinator of the newly formed Port Hawkesbury Literacy Council. Leslie joined Eastern Counties Regional Library in 2001 as Coordinator of Outreach Services.

Daphne Cragg graduated with a BA from UBC, and completed her BLS at the University of Alberta. She has worked witht the Royal Alexandra Hospital Library, then ECRL 1976- 1981, and the Saskatoon Public Library 1981 -1985. She began with CEHRL in 1985 and says she will stay there “until forever, or I drop dead, or I retire---whichever comes first”.

Tracey Mahoney completed a BEd with the Nova Scotia Teachers’ College and St Francis Xavier University. She has taught school in BC and currently works for the Antigonish County Recreation as a Recreation Programmer, and through a partnership with the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library she assists with the Rural Library Services in Antigonish.

Presenters: Erica Smith, Tantallon Junior High School, Pam Nickerson, Jo-Ann Johnson, Erin Purcell, HRSB.

This session will deal with creating a program in a school library. The session will begin with a brief presentation on school libraries which will lead into a round table discussion on programming.

Erica Smith began her career in the public library as a student in 1988. In 1997 she graduated from the Library Technician Program and began work at the Health Sciences Library - QEII Health Sciences Centre. She started working in the school library system in 2004 as the library technician for Tantallon Junior High School.

Erin Purcell graduated from the Library Technician program in 1997. She has been working in libraries since 1996, in museum, public, academic and school libraries. She has been with HRSB since 2003.

Workshop #11 Tips for a One Person Library 9:00-10:15 am

Presenters: Jan Matthews, School Librarian, Amherst Regional High School, Anne Van Iderstine, Judges’ Librarian, Nova Scotia Department of Justice, Leona Stockley, Ingonish Branch, CBRL

Many small libraries are run single handedly from day to day, including public libraries, school libraries, and government libraries. Each of our guest speakers will discuss the special challenges they face and offer tips from their own unique perspective of how one can juggle multiple tasks in a busy work environment.

Jan Matthews has an MLIS from Dalhousie, a BEd specializing in School Librarianship from the University of Toronto, and a BA from Mount Allison. Since 1997 she has worked as the School Librarian at Amherst Regional High School. Prior to that, she worked as a prison librarian at Dorchester Penitentiary, as well as at a university library.

Anne Van Iderstine is the Judges’ Librarian for the NS Department of Justice and a graduate of the Dalhousie MLIS program.

Leona Stockley has been with the Ingonish Branch as a part-time employee since 1993, and as a full-time employee since 2000. She says she enjoys the challenge her job presents- even when she has to snowshoe to work!

This workshop will present a short overview of assistive computer technologies of relevance to public libraries. The assistive technology (A.T.) pilot projects at Cumberland Regional and Pictou-Antigonish Regional Libraries will be discussed and valuable lessons learned. The presenters will also share some great ideas for starting a successful A.T. project at your library, so that you can "bite off something effective that you can also chew".

Marcus Leja is the Systems Librarian at Cumberland Regional Library(CRL). He graduated with an MLIS from Dalhousie University and has worked in the areas of automation, technology adoption, web design, and computer training in Canadian public libraries.

Melanie Pauls has experience as a Customer Service Representative with the Royal Bank, as well as having been a Bookkeeper/Payroll clerk for the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON). She is currently the C@P Coordinator for Antigonish County.

• A bookkeeper in a California public library pockets the overdue fines being sent in from the branches. • A library director in Michigan uses library funds to pay his personal debts. • The Director of a Saskatchewan library is accused of diverting $900,000 over a ten year period from the library’s accounts.

These, and a rash of other library employee thefts, have highlighted the need for Boards to re-examine their role as financial overseers. One way to accomplish this is through the establishment of an Audit Committee. Gloria Banks will discuss the need for Boards to look at governance and risk management with a more critical eye and will explain how an Audit Committee can play a crucial role in this process.

Effective promotional materials play an important role in the success of a library program. Many library staff, who don't have any experience in graphic design, are called upon to create a poster to advertise a library event. Join graphic designer Cathy Little to learn some tips on how to make your promotional materials more successful.

Cathy Little, a graduate of NSCAD, has worked in the advertising and communications industry for 15 years. In that time she has worked at CCL, Bristol Communications, Pulse Marketing and Cossette Atlantic before branching out on her own in 2002. She has been the recipient of two Ice Awards in 2002, and a Prix D’Excellence award in 2004 and 2005. Tanja Harrison is a graduate of the MLIS program at Dalhousie University. She has worked in public, special and academic libraries and is currently the librarian to the School of Recreation Management and Kinesiology at Acadia University.

Kelli WooShue is a graduate of the MLIS program at Dalhousie University. She is currently an instructor with Dalhousie's Faculty of Management and serves as the Information and Publicity officer for the Nova Scotia Library Association.
