You may wish to read Neigbhourly News before continuing with this column. I found Peg Hasein’s Neigh- bourly News column (below, right) of particular interest this week. Back in a former life, I taught social studies, an area of study that encompasses all sorts of topics such as economics, geography and social relation- ships, but also includes my favourite subject: history - in particular, Canadian history. So it was with relish I under- took to answer the 10 questions she posed, taken from content contained within Canada’s new guide for immigrants seeking a fresh start in our great country: Discover Canada - the Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship. Well, it wasn’t long before I was stumped, four-year university teaching degree and seven years of experience notwithstanding. I managed to remember two of the four freedoms asked for in ques- tion one (okay, that’s not quite true: I saw part of the list when I placed the text on this page). Number two I read incorrectly and answered Aboriginal, English and French (and I give my son heck all the time for not reading through to the end of the question!). Numbers three and four stumped me, although as soon as I read the answer to number four, I remembered the Canada Post commer- cials from a few years back. Number fi ve? Not a clue. And reading the answer didn’t help either. I recognized the psalm, but surely did not know that had anything to do with Tilley’s suggestion. Whoohoo! Got number six without even having to open my wal- let. Number seven was easy - Grey, of course! (Yeah, yeah, I know, pretty lame. I had to read the answer to remember who he was.) Toni Ambrose is well known locally for her meticulously-rendered depictions of prairie landscapes and fl oral ar- rangements in pastels and acrylics. Frank Wilson maintains his love of draw- ing and painting mostly in oils. He also carries on with his cartoon sketches that are published in Sas- katchewan newspapers. Helen Herr is a poet and painter who creates impressionistic, abstract 09115WB00 landscapes as well as haiku poetry. Darrell Baschuk is a landscape painter who specializes in oils on can- vas but also enjoys water- colours, pastels, acrylics and encaustics. Michael Gaudet paints almost ex- clusively with acrylics on canvas and his work, while realistic, is strongly infl u- enced by his expression- istic heroes. This year he started a new series called Historic Manitou that delves into imagery based on antique photos and post- cards of Manitou Beach in its early 1900s heyday.
