Some regard the Pheasant Tail as the most popular and deadly nymph ever. Frank Sawyer, an English riverkeeper, developed it for use on his streams, but fly fishers throughout the world have adopted his fly. It’s a simple pattern, consisting of fibers from a ringneck pheasant’s tail and an inch of copper wire. A brass bead will add flash and5 sink the fly quickly. 07.01 3/26/02 1:19 PM Page 3

Flatland Flyfishers 3 Match the Hopper Hatch Hopper flies come in a wide variety. Often the head is Dave’s Hopper made of deer hair, one of the best uses for this versatile material. The wings are usually quill sections, and the bodies are dubbed. Legs can be made of clipped hackle stems, bunched pheasant-tail barbules or a simple flaring of the first bunch of deer hair from the head. The one advantage hopper flies have over many other imitations is that they feel like the genuine article. Whether it's this effect, or the extreme desirability of hop- pers as a food source, a fish that hits a hopper fly is usu- ally hooked.
