DIGITAL EXHIBITION GUIDE

INTO THE GLASS HOUSE INTO THE GLASS HOUSE Journey Into the Glass House and discover the captivating world of life under glass. From tiny terrariums to the five-story tall Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park’s glass houses are sure to delight. TERRARIUMS & THE WARDIAN CASE The history of these curious cases dates back to 1829, when doctor and amateur botanist Nathanial Ward innovated what he called a “fern house.” Ward invented an enclosed sustainable environment, which uses condensation and evaporation to self-regulate climate without an outside water source. Ward’s design—which came to be known as a Wardian case—forever changed the course of botany, farming and commerce during the Industrial Era by allowing safe transport of flowers, plants and crops by ship.

See Meijer Gardens’ own Wardian case in the Earl & Donnalee Holton Victorian Garden Parlor. LENA MEIJER TROPICAL CONSERVATORY This five-story glass house is home to more than 60 of every March and April. Look for the Observation Station, where hundreds of chrysalides are getting ready to reveal colorful butterflies. Admire these winged wonders as they flutter through the air and congregate around feeding stations and glass release cases. As you wander the conservatory, stop to spot stunners like the majestic blue morpho, playful tree nymph and spotted leopard lacewing. CENTRAL & Central and South America are home to more than 44,700 species of butterflies and moths. The Amazon basin, home to the largest tropical rainforest in the world, is particularly rich in species.
