Holiday Party Chair: Laura Hegyi (‘07, ‘17) Sat, Dec. 08 | AACC returns to The Palace Center (Allentown, PA) for our 2018 Holiday Party. Regis‐ tration and payment were due November 21st. If you can no longer attend, please contact Laura at  [email protected] so an accurate headcount can be maintained.

New for this year is the Gift Exchange Game (participation is optional). If you wish to participate, please bring a wrapped gift with a value of $10. Your gift should be thoughtful and suitable for either men or women. We will then play a game that will allow the gifts to be exchanged in a fun manner.

Trivia Time Wed., Dec. 12 | Corvette Trivia returned at the November meeting. Marty Hegyi asks a few questions (for prizes) during our winter meetings. Brush up on your Corvette facts by visiting “Corvette 101” on the LINKS tab of AACC’s website.

Cast Your Vote for AACC’s Next Charity Wed., Dec. 12 | AACC’s Board of Directors solicited member inputs for a local charity which the club will support for the next few years. Club members submitted three charities for Board consid‐ eration, all of which are in line with the direction the Board wishes to take. All are registered 501(c) (3) charitable organizations. Charities available for voting are: Angel 34, Coco Foundation and Pediatric Cancer Foun‐ dation of the Lehigh Valley. Details for each charity were distributed via email for your review.

At our December 12th club meeting, each member will receive a voting ballot and be asked to select one charity for AACC to donate partial show proceeds to starting in 2019 and going forward.

The Board would like to thank Mike Cutro, Robin Fredericks, David Hausman and Michelle Steiner for submitting chari‐ ties for consideration.

My Marketplace Wed., Dec. 12 | During the Nov. 14th meeting, Jeff Mohring discussed the benefits of dielectric grease for winterizing your Corvette’s weatherstripping. There is no brand preference and a $10 bottle should last you a lifetime. Apply a very thin later of the product using a gloved hand. The grease will keep your seals soft and actually expand them a bit — possibly eliminating air infiltration and road noise next Spring.

Marty Hegyi’s My Marketplace continues at the first regular meeting each month through Spring. Contact Marty if you have a Corvette related product or service to present to your fellow club members. Marty can assist with your presentation if needed.

Bacon with the Boys Chair: Jeff Mohring (‘04, ‘16) Fri., Dec. 28 | AACC’s boys and girls are invited to join Jeff Mohring for breakfast on the last Friday of the month. The time is 9am but the location varies around the Lehigh Valley. Contact Jeff at 610‐392‐6898 or [email protected].

Callaway Posts Dealer Inventory Online by Andy Bolig (CorvetteOnline.com)

Thu., Nov. 15 | Callaway Cars has been building “Powerfully engineered vehicles” for decades and their tried and true technique has proven as reliable as it has powerful. We’ve had the opportunity to drive some of their offerings and can say that they are indeed built to drive and enjoy. When you take the fantastic performance levels offered by GM today, and couple it with the additional, warranted performance from Callaway Cars, you’ll be experiencing life at the per‐ formance high‐water mark.

To help their customers find their next car or truck, the company just started listing all the different cars and trucks available through [Callaway’s] dealer network on their website [ www.callawaycars.com]. The listing shows the inventory of available Callaway Corvettes, super‐ charged trucks, and performance SUVs and sedans currently available. There are contacts for each vehicle, so customers can receive more infor‐ mation or speak with a representative.

We asked Callaway representative, [sic] Chris Chessnoe about the pro‐ gram. He explained, “Once they see a Callaway they want, the customer can just click for more info. It sends me an email, and I match the vehicle/dealer to customer. By design, we showcase the vehicles in a uniform manner and then have Callaway Cars as the initial contact, as we want to ensure the best communications and purchasing experience from the start. No getting lost with their inquiries. I know where all the vehicles are located, and as we wrap‐up pro‐ duction on more, we’ll add, and as they sell, we remove.” Callaway reports that they update the page daily as vehicles are reported sold and add them as cars are released for shipping. There are more cars in progress, so the number of cars and trucks available will continue to climb.

With the season of giving right around the corner, perhaps your entire wish list could be summed up in one simple link.

Go-Fund-Me to Get Dad’s C3 by Andy Bolig (CorvetteOnline.com)

Mon., Nov. 19 | Many of us think back to a car from our youth and wish that we could re‐capture all the fun and joy that they [sic] brought to our lives back then. For one Sacramento, California man, that opportunity may have arrived, and he’s asking others to help him make it happen.

Steve Kimball remembers back when his dad purchased a 1972 Corvette. As it was in 1984, the car was already a few years old, but there was still a LOT of life to be lived in the Mille Miglia Red coupe. His dad owned the car for several years, and approximately 15 years ago, his father handed it off to another owner.

Steve reports that, “Sadly, my father passed away last December and I have been wanting to get the car back with the goal of buy‐ ing it, registering it, and fixing it up. I would like to pass it along to my son when he turns 16. It would be something of his grandfa‐ ther’s that would connect all three of us, and ultimately be a per‐ manent memory of him for me.”

Steve recalls his father’s Corvette fondly, and even though neither he, nor his father had seen the car since his dad sold it, Steve re‐ ports that he may have an opportunity to gain ownership of the car once again. The car currently sits in the garage of one of his father’s friends, where it has resided since their paths separated nearly a decade and a half ago.

He isn’t sure if the car still runs, or what it would take to get it back on the road, but he has set up a Go‐Fund‐Me account for anyone who would like to help him find out. He plans to acquire the car, get it running and share the experience with his son, much like his father did over thirty decades ago. The one thing he would do differently? He plans on passing the Corvette on to his son one day, thereby carrying on the Corvette’s history within the family.

Feel free to check out Steve’s Go‐Fund‐Me story, either to participate or simply to watch the progress. We know what it feels like to pine for that special car that “got away.” Perhaps, with a little help, Steve may be able to fill that void with new‐found memories with his son.

GM Cuts , Chevy and by Todd Lassa (AutomobileMag.com)

Mon., Nov. 26 | GM Cuts Cadillac CT6, XTS, Impala, Cruze, Volt, and Buick LaCrosse; Will trim about 15 per‐ cent of its North American salaried workforce.

General Motors will cut the Cadillac CT6, Chevrolet Volt, Impala, Cruze sedan and hatchback, and Buick LaCrosse from its lineup by the end of 2019 as part of a $6 billion cost‐saving plan to prepare the automaker for a zero crashes, zero emissions, zero congestion future.

The Detroit‐Hamtramck assembly plant that builds the Cadillac CT6 is devoting production of that luxury sedan through June 1, 2019, to the V‐Series version powered by the marque’s new 550‐hp, 4.2‐liter twin‐turbo double overhead‐cam V‐8 engine. Production of the also continues there until June 1, while the Buick LaCrosse and Chevy Volt end production at Hamtramck on March 1, 2019.

Cadillac “expects to meet sales demand” for the CT6‐V Blackwing V‐8 with production that has been allocated through next summer, a spokesperson told Automobile magazine.

The Chevrolet Cruze hatchback and sedan end production at GM’s Lordstown Assembly in Warren, Ohio, on March 1 of next year, and pro‐ duction of the Chevy Impala and Cadillac XTS end production in the GM Oshawa, Ontario, Canada assembly plant in the fourth quarter of next year.

GM says it has no allocation of models for Detroit‐Hamtramck, Lordstown, and Oshawa plants beyond the end of 2019. Under UAW agreements, these three plants are not yet determined to be closed after they have no products to build. The automaker also has left without allocation its Warren, Michigan, operations building the six‐speed automatic for front‐drive cars, and its Baltimore operations building full‐size pickup truck transmissions.

The early, unexpected demise of the CT6 will leave Cadillac with two car models. The new models include a replace‐ ment for the ATS, and both will be produced at GM’s Lansing‐Delta Township assembly plant in Michigan, a spokesper‐ son confirmed.

The SuperCruise Level 2 autonomous system that made its debut in the CT6 last year will be added to future Cadillac models, and one of GM’s Chinese assembly plants will continue to build the CT6 there for the Chinese market only after production ends in Hamtramck. GM’s Chinese Cadillac plant has been the exclusive factory for the plug‐in hybrid ver‐ sion of the CT6.

GM says it will cut about 15 percent of its North American salaried workforce, which comes to approximately 8,100 of its 54,000 white‐collar employees. Globally, GM plans a 25‐percent reduction in white‐ and blue‐collar employees. GM

End of CT6, XTS, Impala, Cruze, Volt, and LaCrosse Continued...

(Continued from page 10) will cut a total of 14,800 blue‐ and white‐collar workers by the end of 2019, a number a spokesperson confirmed.

“Contributing to a cash savings of approximately $6 billion are cost reduc‐ tions of $4.5 billion and a lower capital expenditure annual run rate of al‐ most $1.5 billion,” GM said in its press release.

“GM now intends to prioritize future vehicle investments in its next‐ generation battery‐electric architectures.”

That doesn’t mean GM is planning to abandon the internal combustion engine, but that initial investments in modern gas and diesel engine technology, and the platforms that use them, have already been made. GM continues, “it is ex‐ pected that more than 75 percent of GM’s global sales volume will come from five vehicle architectures by early next decade.”

Unlike the Ford marque, GM isn’t getting out of sedans altogether. Past 2019 at least, it plans to continue production of the Chevrolet Malibu, Sonic and Spark, Buick Regal and the two new Cadillac sedans, as well as the Chevy Camaro and Corvette.

Corvette at Home in Icelend by Sigfús B. Sverrisson (petrolicious.com)

Editor’s Note: Michelle and I traveled to Iceland in October of this year. Seeing so few cars driving along the “Ring Road” which encircles the island, we asked each other one night, “I wonder if there are any Corvettes here?” With the aid of a Google search, we found this article. Hopefully you find it as interesting as we did.

Thu., Apr. 28, 2016 | I [traveled] to the U.S. in 1970 when I was 10, and saw the “Sharkbody” C3 with my own eyes—that moment in time is edged [sic] into my mind because it took my breath away! The gleaming, red, rocket of a car with the most unbelievable design lines I had ever seen; it looked like it was going 200 mph stand‐ ing still. It was outside of a Howard Johnson’s restaurant where I also had my first taste of an ice cream soda, and lov‐ ing it during the heat wave we were experiencing[.]

I decided then and there I would have a Corvette when I grew up!

Ten years later, I bought one of the two Corvettes in Iceland, my home country, and had great adventures with it— including a huge repair after it was attacked by horses toting wheelbarrows. (A true story, for another time!)

Ice(land’s) White C3 Continued...

(Continued from page 11)

Twenty‐one years after I sold my first Corvette, I had the means to buy a well‐preserved C3 from California, via eBay. It’s the last of the sharks, in white—a 1982, 350 L83, with “Crossfire” injection and a 4‐speed automatic, with only two prior owners and original paint…although it had worn through on some sharp edges from polishing! Perfect to work on and cruise around in while in Florida.

When the Corvette arrived, it was with some disappointment: the door seals were very tired and a lot of water had leaked into the cabin, as it had rained non‐stop during the transport across country! The scent that accumulated there was like something terrible was growing inside, and the carpet had to be thrown out. Later, I also replaced the leather seat cushions and then the new car smell returned to my “Great White.”

My uncle Robert took care of driving the Corvette twice a month like clockwork, driving around the neighborhood, waving to the dames he would come across. During this time, the Corvette did not leak a drop of oil—after he died, the Corvette would stand idle in between my visits and I had to put big trays on the floor to catch all the oil!

I always intended to ship the Corvette to Iceland, but the Shark did not want to move to the cold. The day before I was going to drive up north, I took the Corvette for the last ride around the neighborhood to make sure everything was ok. It started acting up, when driving ahead it would turn to the right, and under braking it would turn to the left. I first thought that I had a flat so I checked the air…but that was spot on. So I went for another ride and just as I got back, lots of black smoke started pouring from the left wheel well. I went outside to check and the brake disc was glow‐ ing red and the pad was literally melting down: a brake piston was stuck.

This Corvette was going nowhere, as I had to leave in the morning.

Before my next visit, I had ordered Stainless brake cali‐ pers and everything to go with them to fix the problem, and since I was dirty anyway, I also updated the suspension— which in the Corvette had been virtually unchanged since 1963. Completely new suspension and shocks puts it up to about 1996 Corvette standards, which should be adequate for a C3.

After some more small repairs, the Corvette and I were ready to go to Iceland, but low and behold, when we arrived at the station, it closed because of Hurricane Sandy! This delayed the trip about a week, and when I finally got to Virginia Beach, the Eimskip shipping people had to work extra hard to make sure that the Corvette got on board in the last con‐ tainer loaded on ship.

While the ship was steaming towards Iceland, I was busy preparing for the Corvette’s arrival: I had to go to the Ice‐ (Continued on page 13) Page 13 AllentownCorvetteClub.org ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 25, Iss. 12 | December 2018

Ice(land’s) White C3 Continued...

(Continued from page 12) landic DMW to get registration papers for the customs authorities anyway, and I wanted to get a vanity license plate for my American car—and I’ve always wanted “JAWS”…But the DMV computer said no—so I waited to decide on a plate. The importation went like clockwork, but I wanted to have the Corvette painted before registra‐ tion, so off to the paint shop it went: when doing a complete makeover, always calculate double the time for paint…and then double again: this applies any‐ where in the world.

When I finally got the Corvette back, I also took my own sweet time with the reassembly. But one day, I was at Harpa, the concert hall, which is now the new hotspot for cruising in Reykjavik…when my old red Corvette shows up! I had heard that it had been sold back to Reykjavik from Djupivogur in the east of Iceland where it had been most of the time since I sold it. What was unbelievable is that she still had the Goodyear Wingfoot tires that I bought in 1981, 35 years ago! I was mighty happy to sit in the Red Corvettes driver’s seat again, and right away got into gear to finish what I had started with my new Corvette.

Back to the DMW to finish the registration but this time a beautiful girl bubbling with life was taking care of me—so I, of course, asked her if I could get the only correct vanity plate for the car—and she did not consult the computer but called the jail directly, where the plates are made. So thanks to her and her personality, “JAWS” is the number! In Ice‐ land, cars have to go to an inspection station where they check everything out, and they were amazed at how low the emission numbers were from the Corvette—the lowest they had ever seen for a classic V8, and JAWS passed the in‐ spection with flying colors.

During the restoration of my Corvette, I tried to simplify everything to emphasize the basic racy lines which are so won‐ derful: all badges are removed, the vent trim color‐keyed, I removed the horrid sidelights, removed the antenna, and closed the hole. All mechanical modifications have lightened the weight, and now I have to address the power of the engine with a new manifold called “Renegade” and true dual exhaust. Last on the list are daylight running lights, with‐ out having the main lights open.

My wife and I had an ’80s date the other day. We went cruising in the Corvette through downtown Reykjavik, had a wonderful dinner Fish & Chips (naturally, with fresh Atlantic cod), dessert at the ice cream parlor Ísbúd Vesturbaejar (with the best ice cream in town), and enjoyed the sunset at the Grotta Lighthouse. I guess I was hurrying home—as we got a speeding ticket courtesy of the Reykjavik Police Department, something that has not happened in 25 years.

It was déjà vu everything, just like 1980—and still a wonderful day. The best part was when the police officer said: “I know it’s a Corvette, but what make is it…?” Allentown Area Corvette Club Page 14 ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 25, Iss. 12 | December 2018

NCM News & Events ’s 10Best Cars of 2018 Nov. 08 | Car and Driver has released their list of the 2018 10Best cars. According to their website, the list represents "a diverse group of satisfying and special machines that deliver a greater combination of value, driv‐ ing enjoyment, and fulfillment of their intended missions than any other new cars on sale right now. This isn’t some point‐and‐click exercise, carried out at our desks or over instant‐messaging software. Rather, our 10Best list springs from two weeks of extensive, down‐and‐dirty evaluation of actual cars. The rules for vehicle eligibility are thus: En‐ trants must cost no more than $80,000 to start (anything pricier should be amazing), and if they aren’t a returning win‐ ner, they need to be all new or significantly revised this year."

Making the list was the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport, marking the second year in a row the car was included.

As Lifetime Members of the Museum since 1997, Frank and Deborah Whaley had talked for years about making a dona‐ tion of their 1985 Corvette to the Museum. “To be able to own the car and drive it, and then be able to hand it off to the Museum – I feel extremely privileged to be able to do that,” said Frank. “The Museum is a terrific place. Some of the people we’ve met on caravans have been friends ever since. We come back every year to see people.”

NCM News & Events Continued... Two New Board Members Join NCM Nov. 29 | The NCM would like to welcome two individuals to our Board of Directors.

Chuck Fast is no stranger to the Museum or Motorsports Park. In fact, his daughter’s name (Kimberlee A. Fast) adorns not only the pavilion at the track, but also the entry road that takes you there and on the Acre Club wall as you enter the Holley Tower, recognizing the family’s contribu‐ tions for six acres at the track.

Chuck’s involvement with Corvette started in 1964 when he purchased his first, a 1965 Convertible, and joined the Corvette Club of Michigan the following year. Having owned at least one Corvette at a time since, Chuck has had a total of 20 so far, with four currently being in his garage – a 1967 Coupe, purchased new that he plans to donate to the Museum, a 2011 ZR1 and 2016 C7.R Convertible, both of which were picked up at the Museum through the R8C Delivery Program, and Kim’s 2004 which will also be donated to the Museum.

After Kaye Wagner's dad purchased a Corvette, she caught the bug. Shortly after purchasing her own C7, Kaye visited the National Corvette Museum, doing a V.I.P. Plant and Museum tour. Since then, she travels to car shows on her own, including the Corvette and Camaro show her club, the Sioux Falls Corvette Club, holds each June. Kaye has held several offices in the club, including Vice President and most recently President. It was Kaye’s involvement with her club that caught the eye of National Corvette Museum Board Chair Lon Helton. “Our club plans an opening event to kickoff Hot Summer Nights and then drives in a caravan to the Black Hills Corvette Classic where 800‐900 participants from all over the country gather. Lon introduced himself, so I invited him to be a dignitary and lead the 400+ mile drive to Spearfish,” said Kaye. “We chatted off and on all weekend. He asked me to consider applying for the board position, and here we are!”
