Because there was no Ronald McDonald House in Cincinnati at the time, Kurt’s parents and their two other small children jumped from house to house, staying mainly with old college friends in the area.

“My mother has told me many times how incredibly stressful and tiring this was for the entire family,” said Kurt, who now lives in Zionsville. “It was especially hard because my parents lived several hours from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.”

At age 11, during another series of reconstructive surgeries which included doctors shaving his larynx Kurt, his wife Sawyer, and a second tracheotomy, Kurt once again ended up son Maverick, and in intensive care for several weeks. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital from the executive Director Dear Friends, Remember those old movies where the passing of time is shown with the fl uttering turn of the pages of a calendar? It’s as if time has sped up and somehow it is November already! This is such a busy time of the year for Ronald McDonald House volunteers and staff, as I’m sure it is for all of you. On October 1st, we held our annual Volunteer Recognition Celebration. We truly enjoy this opportunity to treat our hardworking volunteers to a special evening of food, fun and celebration. Our 300 plus volunteers are essential to the Ronald McDonald House mission. Without their combined contribution of thousands of hours of valuable time and talent, it would be virtually impossible to provide care and comfort to more than 1,900 families who call the Ronald McDonald House their home-away-from-home throughout the year. Please read more about this very special event on page 3 and visit our website to learn about how you can volunteer for the House. Speaking of volunteers, check out our front page story about one of our newest board members, Kurt Beier. Kurt brings a completely new perspective to our board of directors. As a child, he suffered from health issues with hospital stays that resulted in his family’s extensive use of the services of the Ronald McDonald House in Cincinnati. As founding board member, Karen Campbell commented, “it’s amazing to witness the growth of the RMH program from the fi rst House in Philadelphia in 1974 to the 300th House in 2010. The fact that the children who benefi ted during those early days are now giving back as adults serves to illustrate the impact our mission has on the families we serve.” And fi nally, in the spirit of the season, as you contemplate your year-end charitable contributions, please consider giving generously to the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana. Your support is needed, more than ever, to help us meet our 2010 fundraising goals and continue our mission to serve families of seriously ill or injured children. Thank you so much!
