% THE FINE ARTS DEPARTMENT INDIANA UNIVERSITY BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA June 8, 1934 Mr. U. H. Smith, Bursar of Indiana University, Bloomington,Indiana.

My dear Mr. Smith:

I enclose a revised and enlarged list of pictures to be insured.

I am including a list of color and photographic reproductions of pictures, which are more or less exposed to theft. They are in the office, corridor, lecture-room and some, in the store room, but not all of the time, that is, we change certain pictures in the corridor two or three times a year. In regard to the main collec- tion of paintings, prints and drawings I wish to repeat that in

Edt instances the insurance valuations are oure guess work and, I certain fear, are often absurdly low. This is more particularly true of engravings on metal not on the list. I can not do the work at all as it should be done unless you supply me with the cost of each item.

I assume that you do not intend to insure the entire col- lection at this time. If I am mistaken about this one of your assis- tants is at liberty to go through my catalogue, where he will find the insurance value on each card. Would it not be well for you to have these figures anyhow, in case of fire. They could be put on the dup. catalogue which I suppose you have in your office.

I revising insurance values I reduced the valuations on some items among our loans. If you have not yet insured these, but intend to do so please send some one over here tomo* w between 11 and

11-30 and I will give him the new figures.

truly y ours
