Who should we be looking out for?

Plenty of players with Premier Division experience in the team this year but Adam Wixted has looked lively so far.

Do Athlone have a weak link?

Weakest link is probably at the committee level as they don’t have the support of the fans.

What’s your prediction?

Considering the performances of both sides recently, I fully expect an Athlone win.

very week we’ll meet a rival fan Will you be at the match? to get some lowdown. Tonight we Etalk to Athlone supporter Chris Yes. Ryan. Who at Galway are you afraid of? What do you make of Athlone’s chances this season? Being a former Athlone Town B team player, John Caufield! After such a good start they should make the playoffs at the very least.

How long are you supporting the team?

Too long.

What do you make of the management team?

Nice to see local involvement.

Are things solid off the pitch?

The drive-in bingo looks to be bringing in a lot of money so that’s probably keeping things going.

Maroon View 41 ON THIS DAY 11th JUNE

Galway United have a 100% record on today’s date: June 11. There has just been one match played on this date so it may not be quite as impressive as it first sounds!

2004

2004

Galway United 3 Sligo Rovers 1

Alan Gough; Nigel Keady, Conor Frawley, Ronan Frawley, Mike Quirke; Mixie Harty, Fran Carter, Mark Herrick, Derek O’Brien (Ryan Casey); Barry Moran (David O’Dowd), Damien Dupuy.

Despite falling behind to a sixth- minute Paul McTiernan strike United were ahead by half-time with Barry Moran and Fran Carter on the scoresheet. Moran extended the lead early in the second half before former United player Ian Rossiter was sent off for the Bit O Red.

As well as Rossiter, Sligo also fielded Alvin Rouse, Ciaran Foley, Gareth Gorman and Benny Lawless, who also wore the maroon of United during their careers and were managed by Don O’Riordan.

It would prove to be a disappointing season in Division 1 for both sides with United finishing the season in fifth, two places and 14 points above our Connacht rivals.

1988: The old Terryland Park was special. The noise that came from the crowd in the ‘shed’ was much louder than the stands that replaced it.

46 Maroon View 1996: Galway United captain Derek Rogers accepts the League of Ireland Shield after winning the final against Limerick FC at Terryland Park. Dennis Clarke was the club manager. Three weeks later, Galway United won the League Cup in Turner’s Cross. Paul O’Brien is writing a book about Galway Rovers / Galway United and is looking for old photos. Email [email protected]
