The band plays a range of jazz styles including swing, Latin, rock, funk and soul music. Students should be approximately Grade 4 standard and above and be able to read music fluently and play their instrument with confidence. Guitarists and bassists should be able to read traditional style music notation and jazz guitar chords. (Tablature is not usually a form of notation read by jazz musicians.) In the case where several rhythm section musicians apply to be part of the jazz band, that is, if there is more than one or two piano players, guitarists, drummers or bassists then auditions may be held. The Jazz Band has limited positions for these instruments due to musical reasons. The band plays regularly at school events including the annual Gala Concert, School Fair, assemblies and sometimes community functions outside of the school. Rehearsals are fun and you will obviously develop your musical skills and learn new repertoire. There are opportunities for solos too. Jazz Band will start later in term one once the Blood Brothers production is finished. Please speak to Mr Jolly for more details. Activity Leader: JOLLY, Ben; BETTERIDGE, Daniel External Coach:

Studies have shown that yoga not only helps young people to develop stronger, more flexible bodies but augments the life skills that they receive in the classroom. Yoga is known to: Increase concentration, focus and attention Build selfesteem and confidence Express creativity and develop the powers of imagination Open the door to a more peaceful frame of mind and body. Help understand your body better and know how it works Foster language skills, encourage reflection and develop social interaction. Life is a continuous learning process and developing a balanced way of life is a tremendous challenge in today?s stressful environment. Young people face the pressures of balancing their studies alongside sport and extra curricular activities. Yoga helps minimize stress by developing better body awareness, flexibility and coordination. Gaelle Foulon Daffner is a qualified yoga specialist with over 7 years teaching experience and has studied Iyengar Yoga from the masters at Iyengar Yoga Institute Pune. Gaelle is particularly patient and responsive to the needs of young people. She and has been working with youngsters for many years now and as a mother of three is very aware of their needs and what Yoga can do for them. Iyengar yoga is a very active form of Yoga that is engaging, powerful and dynamic. Young people who practice yoga build a life long foundation of discipline, physical and emotional wellbeing that translates into all aspects of living. Gaelle?s classes focus on a variety of yoga postures and fun visualization techniques which are aimed at making students healthier and happier individuals. NB: Yoga and medical conditions: Students and parents are strongly advised to inform the yoga teacher of any medical conditions. If these are old injuries, for example, sporting or surgical history, this would help the teacher modify certain postures to minimise stress to the affected areas. Students with the following conditions are advised to NOT take Yoga at school but to seek the advice & expertise of a more professional studio. These studios are better equipped with suitable props to support the practice of those with these conditions as well as teachers specifically experienced in these areas: Detached retina Epilepsy High blood pressure Heart conditions Scoliosis Recently broken / fractured bones Recent surgery Cerebral Palsy Spinal and neck injuries Psychiatric conditions If in doubt about a medical condition, please inform the teacher anyway.
