VOWMEXIX I NUMBERJ OOWMBUS1 OHID MAY 1983 MEXICANSDOMINATE NATI.oNAL .50 KM Monterey, cal., May 21--Mexico's Martin Bermudez, third on the all-time .50 kll list behind his countcyuan Raul Conzalez and Siain's Jose Marin, was an easr winner of the National TAC.50 Kmchampionship race today. His teammate, Felix Gomez, with a best of J149106 last year finished second, but not far ahead of Marco Evoniuk, who became the U.S. titleholder, his third champion ship at the distance. Bermudez had a 31.50143, the fastest ever walked in this country, and finished nearly 10 minutes ahead of Gomez. A third Mex ican, Marcelino Colin, who came first in the TAC15 Km a week earlier, edged Jim Heiring for the next spot, Despite the Mexican dominance, it was a very strong showing for our own walkers. I8n O'Connor joined Evoniuk and Heiring under 4:10, the qual ifying standard for the World Games. This means we could have a full comp liment of walkers in that meet, although one would expect Heiring to go for the 20 km. However, the steadily improving T0 m Edwards and Sam Shick, who had 41151.52 and 411710) in this race, could coneei~~bly meet the standard in the Sports Festival .50 in July, And Heiring could choose to walk both events . Of these first five, all but Evoniuk h?d personal bests, and he missed by just over a minute. Behind these five, the depth of performance was the best in hist ory as Wayne Glusker, Fabian Knizacky, and Mike DeWitt also recorded personal best to put the first 8 under 4130, There were , three more under 4140, another four llilder 4 r.50, and a total of 21 under the 5 hour mark. This is a vast improvement over the iast few years, when our standard in the event seemed to be falling. The Grimm Reaper (aka Neal Picken) hung on to win the Master's title and Bev laVeck turned in another fine 50 (5:27:20) to finish as first woman. At this point we have full results, but no splits or details on how the race progressed, Full report next month. Martin Bermudez, Mex. 31.50143 Felix Gomez, Mex. 4100111 1. Marco Evoniuk, un. Marcelino Colin,an unknown quantit y going into the race, outdueled Canada's Marcel Job.in to finish on to p of t oday's National TAC1.5 Km Championship race. Colin's 1:02158 beat Jobin by 9 seconds, Another 19 seconds back, Jim Heiring copped the U.S. ti tle, a title he also won last year. Revelation of the race was Sa111Shi ck, who made up coneiderabl ground on everyone over the final 5 km to fin ish in 1104:JJ, Sam started slowly in comparison to the leaders and then increased his :iace throughout -.dth split s of 22107, 21146, and20 :4o! Another Mexican, Heenan Yanez was next, and then Iarry Walker continu ed his amazing walking since joining the Master's ranks with a 1107134 for th ird place in the U.S. He came from 15 seconds behind Pete Timmonsand Isr ael's Ivan Glasenburg in the fina l 5 km to do so. Marco Evoniuk challe nged Colin over the first 5 km and then was either disqualified or dropped out jus t before 10 Km. (I have gotten both reparts, but I thin .k the former i s corr ectJ Despite Marco's demise and the absence of some other top names, there were seven U.S. walkers under 1:10 in the race.
