ANOTHER OPINION Tech must choose sides in privacy fight he lines have been drawn. Tech leaders no longer can sit on the sidelines, pretending they have no Tleadership role to play on the tech issue of our times: privacy and the consequences of nonstop exploita- tion of users for financial gain. Apple CEO Tim Cook captured the stakes on Jan. 28 during his speech to open the European Union Computers, Privacy & Data Protection conference in Brussels. “If a business is built on misleading users, on data exploitation, on choices that are no choices at all, then it does not deserve our praise. It deserves reform. We should not look away from the bigger picture,” said Cook. “At a moment of rampant disinformation and con- spiracy theories juiced by algorithms, we can no longer turn a blind eye to a theory of technology that says all engagement is good engagement — the longer the bet- ter — and all with the goal of collecting as much data as possible.” Cook did not mention Facebook or its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, by name. But his target was clear when he said, “A social dilemma cannot be allowed to become a social catastrophe.” It was a direct reference to the 2020 Netflix documentary “The Social Dilemma” that explored the dangerous impacts of online social net- working. CHS TIGERETTES

COURTESY Grand champions The CHS Tigerettes traveled to Savannah, Ga., on Feb. 6 to compete in the Diamond Dance Championship. The Tigerettes competed in the Varsity Jazz category with a rendition of ‘New York, New York’ choreographed by Sarah Chapman. With this routine, the dancers won first place in the Varsity Jazz category, as well as Grand Champion overall of school teams. The Grand Champion award qualifies the Tigerettes to compete in the Diamond Dance Finale in Jacksonville on April 30. Michia Miller over Keaton Hellmeg. Thomas was Columbia’s lone loss on the day, losing a close match to Meagan Beaty 8-6 at No. 1 singles. Junior Adrienne Foreman won No. 2 singles over Brooklyn Williams 8-3, while junior Kali Cochran took No. 3 singles over Chloe Dubose 8-5. Sophomore Allison Mastubara topped Desiree Edwards 8-1 at No. 4 singles and freshman Amanda Gonzalez was awarded No. 5 singles when she held a 4-3 lead over Hailey Britt before the rain halted play. As for the rest of the season, here’s how the teams stack up: BOYS All eyes will be on Wilcoxon and if he’s able to return to the state tournament. It’s a different district than two years ago when he qualified, with Columbia having to go through Ponte Vedra, Fleming Island, Lee, Englewood, First Coast, Fletcher and Middleburg in District 3-3A. The schools in Duval County aren’t traveling out of county for matches during the regular season but Wilcoxon will get a chance to face Ponte Vedra, Fleming Island and Lee. “Camrin is playing each weekend, he’s playing in tournaments throughout the state and he will be playing Lee, Fleming Island and Ponte Vedra,” said Columbia coach Tom Moore, who is entering his eighth and final season at the helm. “Those are the three schools in our district that we hope to play during the season and we will know how we will do in districts.” Moore says Ponte Vedra is the team to beat in the Photos by JORDAN KROEGER/Lake City Reporter district and getting past that squad will be a huge Columbia’s Adrienne Foreman returns a shot against Union County on Thursday. test. Behind Wilcoxon will eventually be senior Cole Werhli when he returns from soccer, while Boudreau will hold No. 3 and Dutch will be No. 4. Senior Caleb Stengel and Bell will battle for the No. 5 spot. Wilcoxon and Wehrli will pair for No. 1 doubles and Boudreau and Dutch will take No. 2 doubles. “We played Ponte Vedra two years ago and they’re the class of this district,” Moore said. “All five play- ers are good players and they’re the ones we have to shoot for.” GIRLS Behind Thomas in O’Neal’s lineup is typically Foreman at No. 2 singles, while O’Neal says Kailie O’Neal and Cochran are battling right now for the No. 3 and 4 spots. Mastubara will be No. 5, though Gonzalez played up on Thursday while O’Neal dealt with an injury. “My top girls are pretty good,” O’Neal said. “I’m confident in their abilities. I really am. Last year we didn’t get to finish the season but it was a winning season. So I’m confident in my girls.” While she doesn’t play singles, Taiya Driggers gives Columbia a boost in doubles. Driggers pairs with Thomas at No. 1 doubles while Foreman will either play with O’Neal or Cochran at No. 2. “(Driggers) is a beast at the net,” O’Neal said. “She’s aggressive.” Much like the boys, getting through districts as a team could prove tough for Columbia. It’s the same lineup for the girls, but O’Neal is hoping Thomas can at least power her way through the bracket. LEFT: Columbia’s McKinnen Bell fires a shot back against Union County on Thursday.
