2007 Coaching Awards

So Long, Buddy! - by Tim Enger www.fo On Friday, November 1, 2013 the football com- munity lost a great man. I was going to say the “Calgary football community” or even the “Alberta football community” lost a great man but in reality the loss of Brock Jacobs is a loss for the entire football community because he embodied so much of what is right about our game it is difficult to define his effect on the game with borders.

Now, he isn’t the first man to display the traits of kindness, caring, consistency, sportsmanship and joy of the game when it came to coaching and administrating football, and I’m certain he won’t be the last, but it was how he carried himself that made him so unique. Brock loved playing football as a young man in Calgary most notably for Queen Elizabeth High School then a solid Junior career with the Calgary Colts and couldn’t wait to give back to the game once his playing days were done. Starting out as a vol- unteer coach in 1974 with the Calgary Bantam League, he began a relationship with minor football that would last him the rest of his days.

At his funeral on November 8, you couldn’t help but be struck by the hundreds of people who filled one of the largest churches I’ve ever seen. There were football jerseys everywhere and people from all the era’s in his life from kids he’d coached just one year earlier to the gentleman sitting in front of me who was on that first bantam team Brock ever coached in 1974. Football didn’t define the man in en- tirety as he was a great husband and father as well, and an honest businessman who had a great deal of re- spect in his trade. However, it was through football that he could bring his gifts to the world and make it a better place to be and you a better person for having known him.

So why all this fuss about Brock still? We’ve all known great guys in football. Each league in the province at all levels can point to a few people just like him who gave back to the sport in a positive uplifting way. Brock himself used to talk of men like Ted Bancks and Les Ferguson who provided him with mentor- ship when he was starting out and made him a better person through football. To me, it was the way he conducted himself. He was “big picture” all the way. It an idea wasn’t necessarily the best for his team but was the best for his league then he was for it. As a representative for Calgary Minor on the Football Alberta Board he always considered what was best for ALL the players of the Province not just what was in the best interest of his area. He also shared concepts from Calgary Bantam, which arguably is one of the finest minor football leagues in Canada, without being arrogant or condescending all in the interest of simp- ly making things better for others. During the fall, even though he was on the Executive of Calgary Bantam, he would be right down in the thick of things on the sidelines making things work. If he wasn’t coaching, he’d be timing or doing public address. No resting on his laurels and assuming the grunt work should be done by someone else for this guy – he got his hands dirty.

2007 Coaching Awards So Long Buddy ...continued from Page 10

During Provincials he would act as the traffic cop at Shouldice sorting out dressing rooms for visiting teams. No small feat as Shouldice is a tremendous facility with three top of the line playing fields but woefully lacking in dressing rooms and without Brock sorting through the madness and giving the Pee-Wee, Bantam, and High School kids his best during those times it would have been utter chaos. I doubt he ever www.footballalberta.ab.ca saw much of any game as he knew his duties were required elsewhere and if it meant standing outside for hours in subzero temperatures then so be it. He set the bar high and to this day you will find the Executive Members of Calgary Bantam on the sidelines doing whatever it takes to make the game run smoothly for the kids just as he had. As well, he constantly preached, and set examples for, the concept that it was possible to play against an opponent with all you got, and win or lose still shake hands with a smile at games end and perhaps grab a beer with the opposing coaches afterwards. He taught his players that the opponent was not an “enemy” but rather an honored group of football players that yes - they were going to try to defeat – but, were not evil people and should be given every due consideration of common decency before, during, and after the game. Tell me how many games like that you’ve experience lately, then you’ll understand how important this man was and how we should all try to live up to those standards.

The Alberta Summer Games were another Brock specialty as he was the only head coach the Calgary Zone ever knew, and did double duty putting a quality product on the field as well as managing his coaching staff which was no easy task as Calgary is a very competitive place and bringing coaches from opposing pro- grams together in a positive light took the touch of a Master. The results were pure magic as even if he had the advantage of population and number of teams to draw from, his teams were great, but well- mannered and seemed to be enjoying every aspect of the experience. To see him get ultra-cool 14 year olds to do his “Jimmy-Jam-Jam” hop (or whatever it was) and buy into that completely may help explain why the attendance at his funeral was so large and why his absence will be so keenly felt.

Brock was football, or at least everything that was good about football. I cannot remember a cross word or inconsistent behavior from the man. He lived in a modest house in a modest neighborhood surrounded by a loving family and great neighbors and friends who loved his company. His business may have suffered a bit from the amount of football work he did during the day but he didn’t mind. Brock wasn’t out to become a Millionnaire. He loved the game and the game loved him right back and that was all the payment he need- ed in life. We should all be so lucky.

From my dealings with him I’ll never forget the child like enthusiasm he had for any program we were con- ducting for minor football and how he could talk for hours about the game he loved. Sometimes it was dif- ficult to get him off the phone when you had to move on with your day but he always left you with an “Okay buddy, so long!”. He was as true a friend, a mentor, and example as any man could ask for. What I wouldn’t give to hear those words again….
