Whalen ILLUSTRATED THE JOHN DAY COMPANY, NEW YORK Preface Of the three major indigenous religious movements in this country-Mormonism, Christian Science, and Jehovah's Wit- nesses-only the third has been more or less neglected by students of the American religious scene. Not more than a handful of studies, mostly partisan, have examined Jehovah's Witnesses as a religious and sociological phenomenon al- though this cult, the youngest and smallest of the three, lays claim to being the fastest-growing religion in the world. The growth of Jehovah's Witnesses should be of interest not only to the clergy and members of the traditional churches but also to sociologists, lawyers, psychologists, mass communicators. The Brooklyn-based cult has something to tell each. The best recent study of the Witnesses is unfortunately not available in English translation. It was written by a French Canadian Jesuit, Fr. Gerard Hbbert, and published in Mon- treal under the title Les Tdmoins de Jdhovah. One of the rare objective studies in English was a slim book by Royston Pike. When a Knoxville, Tennessee, building contractor 5 PREFACE wrote a laudatory account of the cult he collected a portfolio of rejection slips from leading publishers until he finally turned to a vanity publisher. To the amazement of the book trade Marley Cole's Jehovah's Witnesses: The New World Society sold 100,000 copies the first year and ended among the top ten best sellers for 1955. His book was recommended in the pages of the Watchtower and by speakers at district and regional assemblies of Witnesses. Presumably many Wit- nesses bought the book. A sequel by the same author, Tri- umphant Kingdom, was issued two years later by another vanity publisher but failed to achieve the success of the first book. The two Cole books and another book written by a veteran Witness, A. H. Macmillan (Faith on the March) are exam- ples of favorable treatments published by non-Witness presses. On the other hand a number of Protestant ministers have written books and tracts exposing what they believe to be the unscriptural basis of the cult. The best example of books in this category is Jehovah of the Watchtower: A Com- plete Expos6 of Jehovah's Witnesses by Walter R. Martin and Norman H. Klann, both Baptist ministers. Their book has gone into its fifth printing. Finally there are the two exposes by a disaffected ex-Witness, William J. Schnell, called Thirty Years a Watch Tower Slave and Into the Light of Christian- ity. Schnell makes his main appeal to evangelical Christians and urges them to combat Witness witnessing. Two published Ph.D. theses have appeared. One, in ab- breviated form, was published by the Yale University Press in 1933: The International Bible Students by Milton Stacey Czatt. The other was written by the present Dean of Students at Brooklyn College, Herbert H. Stroup, and published by the Columbia University Press in 1945 under the title The PREFACE 7 Jehovah's Witnesses. Both were excellent pieces of scholarly research although the Czatt study is now somewhat dated. Considering the expansion and impact of the cult, the avail- able secondary source material is small. On the other hand, the researcher finds himself over- whelmed by the printed output of the Watchtower Society. J. F. Rutherford, the Society's second president, wrote 22 full-length books and dozens of pamphlets and tracts. The flow of books, magazines and tracts has not abated since his death in 1942. Since then the Watchtower has released 15 more official texts. Of course, a writer cannot rely only on such material. He must also employ observation, interviews, correspondence, etc. My aim has been to produce neither a whitewash nor an attack on Jehovah's Witnesses. Skeletons in Watchtower closets will be rattled but accomplishments will not go un- recognized. I should make it clear that I am not a Jehovah's Witness but a Roman Catholic layman. My chief purpose is 1 not to produce a point-by-point refutation of Watchtower doctrines on Biblical or theological grounds. Others more qualified than I as theologians may undertake this task if they wish. In fact, Father Hkbert and the Rev. Messrs. Mar- tin and Klann already have. Inconsistencies in this book in the words "Watchtower" and "Witnesses" are carried over from the cult's own usage. It has employed at various times both "Watch Tower" and "Watchtower,'' and my effort has been to make in each case the choice appropriate to the time and place. For reasons of their own, cult members never capitalize "witnesses"; when quoting from their publications I follow this style, but other- wise I use the capital, as does everyone except members.     JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES History The Adventist movement emerged in the 1830s around the predictions of William Miller, who proclaimed that Jesus Christ would return in 1843 or 1844. When Christ did not return as Miller prophecied, Adventists divided into a number of factions. During the 1870s, Charles Taze Russell established himself as an independent and controversial Adventist teacher. He rejected belief in hell as a place of eternal torment and adopted a non-Trinitarian theology that denied the divinity of Jesus. He also interpreted the Second Coming in accordance with the literal translation of the original Greek term, parousia (“presence”), suggesting that Christ would come as an invisible presence and that the Parousia, or “Millennial Dawn,” already had occurred, in 1874. The coming of Christ’s invisible presence signaled the end of the current order of society and would be followed by his visible presence and the establishment of the millennial kingdom on earth in 1914. Although the kingdom did not come, Russell’s teachings motivated a number of volunteers to circulate his many books and pamphlets and a periodical, The Watchtower, and to recalculate the time of the Parousia. In addition to the International Bible Students Association, Russell formed the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania (1884), with himself as president. In 1909 he transferred the headquarters of the movement to Brooklyn. Russell was succeeded as president in 1917 by Joseph Franklin Rutherford (Judge Rutherford; 1869–1942), who changed the group’s name to Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1931 to emphasize its members’ belief that Jehovah, or Yahweh, is the true God and that the Witnesses were his specially chosen followers.

Theoretically situated in recovery and desistance literature underpinned by the social identity approach, the current study examined cross-sectionally the extent to which ‘disfellowshipped’ former Jehovah’sWitnesses’ experiences of ostracism and post-exit identification with others are associated with diminished psychological well-being and identity transition success. It also examined the extent to which the type of exit (forced vs. voluntary) and prior religious commitment shaped these outcomes. The authors recruited 554 adults (62% female; M age = 37.26, SD age = 12.82) via online social support networks for former Jehovah’s Witnesses. Path analysis tested the mediating and mod- erating functions of exit method (forced vs. voluntary), commitment level during mem- bership, and post-exit group identification with groups on outcomes of identity transition, recovery identity, self-esteem, and well-being. Results indicate that individuals who voluntarily left the Jehovah’s Witnesses reported more ostracism than those who were disfellowshipped (forced out) and that a higher level of prior religious commitment was associated with post-religious identity transition success and diminished self-esteem. Findings further suggest that distinct aspects of respondents’ social identity were related differentially to outcomes in partial support of the theoretical framework.

Chryssides University of Birmingham and York St John University, United Kingdom [email protected] ABSTRACT: Jehovah’s Witnesses have experienced opposition since the Watch Tower Society’s inception, and the history of opposition is traced here. Initially, grounds for disapproval were doctrinal, but spanned out to controversies about “miracle wheat” and founder-leader Charles Taze Russell’s marital breakdown. Under second leader Joseph Franklin Rutherford, controversy surrounded patriotism and military service. The Witnesses’ refusal to celebrate popular festivals attracted subsequent disapprobation, as did allegations of failed prophecy. The Society’s stance on blood, disfellowshipping, and shunning have given rise to further unpopularity, and its New World Translation of the Bible has attracted hostility from Christian counter-cult critics. Jehovah’s Witnesses have experienced political opposition, and particular attention is given to Russia and South Korea. Most recently, accusations of sexual abuse have gained publicity, and official investigations in Australia and the Netherlands. Finally, the advent of the Internet has enabled critics to organize opposition online. The author does not evaluate these criticisms or examine the Society’s rejoinders, but notes that Jehovah’s Witnesses continue with faith maintenance, regarding opposition as fulfilment of biblical prophecy.     A CHRONOLOGY of JW HISTORY (1/2020) 1843-1845 William Miller (1781-1849) attracts about 100,000 followers by predicting Christ's second coming for 1843. After disconfirmation this is revised to 1844. The movement then disintegrates but in 1845 survivors start to re-organize and are called "Second Adventists". Over the next decades they organize into many sects. 1852 Birth of Charles Taze Russell who grows up in Allegheny near Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. 1869 C.T. Russell's faith, after a brief period as a skeptic, is rejuvenated by Jonas Wendel a preacher of the Advent Christian Church. [The Advent Christian Church, founded in 1861, is one of the many groups that organized from the Second Adventists.] 1869-1873 Russell attends meetings led by George Storrs (1796-1879) and George Stetson (1814-1879). [Storrs was a prominent figure in the Millerite movement and a founder of the Life and Advent Union (1863) which is another Second Adventist sect. Stetson was a minister of the Advent Christian Church.] c.1873 William Henry Conley (1840-1897) a wealthy businessman and his wife, and C.T. Russell and his father and sister, start a new study group. Russell is baptized in 1874, whether within the Advent Christian Church or within the new study group is unclear. 1876 Russell is elected "pastor" of the Russell/Conley Bible class. His group unites with a group of Second Adventists led by Nelson H. Barbour and John H. Paton. [Barbour had experienced the disappointment of 1844 and lost his faith, but became a believer again in 1859.] An article by Russell titled "Gentile Times: When Do They End?" is published in The Bible Examiner (October 1876, pp 27-28) which is the magazine founded and edited by George Storrs.

My impression is that most people outside the movement and many in it are unable to answer this question satisfactorily. For most people the only contact with the Witnesses seems to have been a brief encounter on the doorstep where they may have politely or impolitely dosed their door, engaged in some furious and fruitless argument or perhaps bought two Witness magazines (never to read them). I have questioned many outside the movement about their impression of the Witnesses and it seems to be one of a 'cranky' but sincere people who persist in calling from house to house at the most awkward times; their history is shrouded in mystery and their beliefs appear to be very peculiar.

Go to any bookstore or library and look up "Jehovah's Witnesses" and you will find nine times out of ten the statement; "Jehovah's Witnesses, a sect founded by Charles Taze Russell". But nothing could be further from the truth. Indeed, the late Charles Taze Russell (1852-1916) was the founder and organizer of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society and served as the editor of Zion's Watch Tower and Herald of Christ's Presence from its inception in July 1879.

    Page 1 of 16 LEST WE FORGET A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BIBLE STUDENT MOVEMENT AFTER PASTOR RUSSELL’S DEATH The following resulted from an inquiry by one newly interested in the Truth about the history of the Bible Students and the Truth movement. This brief review attempts to relate experiences of Bible Students after Pastor Russell’s death as factually as possible. It is purposely brief, but hopefully it includes historical events that help explain present conditions amongst Bible Students. Its viewpoint and comments reflect the writer’s own experiences, readings and accounts told to him by older Bible Students. The writer began his consecrated life in 1948 at the age of 17 meeting with a Dawn class in Seattle, Washington, and remained there for over twenty years until changing conditions caused a division. Understandably, some would rather forget painful past experiences, but, hopefully, reflecting upon the past and its lessons will help some avoid repeating them in the future. The death of Pastor Charles Taze Russell, October 31, 1916, marked a dramatic change in the course of the Bible Student movement. PASTOR RUSSELL’S MINISTRY During Pastor Russell’s lifetime, he founded the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society and other business entities to further the work of proclaiming “Present Truth” to the world, particularly, the Christian world. Under his leadership, the Truth message was available to all in the United States, Europe and many other countries. In his day, he was the most prominent Christian personage in the world. His sermons were carried weekly in 2,000 of our nation’s leading newspapers.
