Keeping in touch with old friends all over the world WELCOME! STOGA 2016 Welcome TO THE STOGA NEWSLETTER

Welcome to the third edition of the new style STOGA Newsletter. I am pleased to say that the STOGA membership has grown from 600 to 1948 old girls and of those 866 have ‘be-friended’ us on Facebook which is a great way of fi nding and keeping in touch with old friends. However, there are still many old girls we would like to re-establish contact with and as many have changed their surnames it is diffi cult to trace them. Please see the “Where are they now” section and if you are in contact with any old girls please encourage them to join up as there is no membership fee these days! We would also love to have email addresses for more of you as the post is so expensive these days and reminders of events and Newsletters to overseas girls are sent out by email. We hope to see many of you at events and at the Reunion in PLEASE UPDATE October this year. YOUR DETAILS! 2 REUNIONS STOGA 2016 Reunions & Events SUMMER REUNION

12th September 2015

Once again we had a fabulous turn out of girls from all the decades. Leavers from 1949 through to 2005 enjoyed catching up with old friends and bringing back memories of the old days at school on Effi ngham Hill. Much has changed and been brought bang up to date but plenty such as the board room below remain much the same. This year saw the return of the Equestrian Centre to the school and it is lovely to see horses grazing in the fi elds once more.

OLD MAYFAIR GUIDED WALK

12th March 2015

The walk was postponed a couple of weeks due to the torrential rain forecast for the original date. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the alleyways of Shepherds Market, discovering Mount Street Gardens, a peaceful sanctuary in the middle of the city hidden behind the red brick mansion blocks and the beautiful Farm Street Church (pictured below) which was exquisite.

BOAT TRIP FROM KINGSTON TO HAMPTON COURT GARDENS

21st April 2015

On the most beautiful sunny spring day we took off from Kingston on board the Turks boat for Hampton Court Gardens. Our timing was perfect as the gardens were spectacular in full bloom and fi lled with fragrant blossoms and the most gorgeous tulips. It was such a perfect balmy evening that we stopped for drinks at Kingston Riverside on our way back. A very memorable and enjoyable day.

AFTERNOON TEA AT ST TERESA’S 2 Thursday 19th March 2015 A combination of ‘old girls’ and St Teresa’s ex parents attended the Afternoon Tea in March! A large group of 1979 girls came along and it was great fun for them to reminisce and explore. Although some things remain the same, it was a chance for all to see the many improvements made over the last couple of years.

LITTLE VENICE GUIDED WALK

24th June 2015 Again blessed with fabulous weather we enjoyed walking through the elegant Regency Terraces of Warwick Avenue past the former homes of Joan Collins, Robert Browning and Edward Fox to name just a few. Then we were taken into a fascinating tiny church at Paddington Green, and along the tow path of the Grand Canal looking at all the houseboats along the way. This was followed by a spot of lunch at a delightful restaurant on the waterside. Afterwards some of us took the boat to Camden Lock which fi nished off the day perfectly.

AUTUMN EMPTY NESTERS WALK Walton Marina towards Hampton Court

Our luck ran out this time and it was a bit of a drizzly morning so we had an excuse to stop at a lovely pub along the town path for coffee and cake.

6 MEMORIES STOGA 2016 Memories of Christmas 1979

Cynthia Snowden (nickname Snowy) (now aged 86) who taught maths at St Teresa’s from 1975 to 1980 has combined a cassette recording of the staff entertaining the girls at Christmas 1979 and photographs from that era to produce an amazing video on YouTube which you can watch from the link below. https://youtu.be/zeS6SkCCqiM After leaving St T’s, I had a job with a Finance Company in the City. Then returned to my home area in North Devon to be near my parents who lived to the grand ages of 94 and 97! Shared a home with an old friend. We travelled the world for 20 years, fl ying, driving, cruising. Where possible we would hire a car and I did all the driving, covering literally thousands of miles in the States and Canada. My friend died in 2008 since when I have been on my own. I do not have any children so, being hard of hearing, I spend a lot of time on the computer, researching etc etc. I have traced my father’s line back to William the Conqueror and, during the past week, have traced a link between me and one of my table tennis colleagues who was born in Dorset – I’m a Devonian. That link is our Gt Gt Gt Gt grandparents, who married in the 1700s. I do get out for some fresh air, with an ex-pupil of mine (!), weather permitting – and it’s been horrendous down here for most of the winter! I look forward to seeing some of you when I attend the reunion in October.

I was sleeping in what is now called the Sacred Heart block in number l8, when I was awoken by the door opening, and a torch fl ashing in the room. Thinking it was the Sister I did not take notice until I saw a man standing near my bed. He had an overcoat on, a cap on his head, a carving knife in his hand and a torch. In my simple mind I thought I could have a conversation with him and send him away politely, but he was as afraid as I was, and asked what I had in my hand. I showed him my rosary and then he said that he hated English people, quickly I said I was not English, and then he asked for money. I said I could not get up unless he moved from my bed as the switch was on the opposite wall. He moved, put the knife on the fl oor and threw himself quickly on the small cupboard where my medal and watch were. During that time

170.71 170.90 record high. There was fi erce competition for Year 7 entrance with more than three external applications for every place. Likewise, the Prep has continued to experience a high level of interest and there are currently waiting lists for Year 4 upwards. Commenting on this success, Headmaster, Mike Farmer said; “Whilst it is wonderful that so many families wish to join St. Teresa’s, rejecting worthy candidates is a diffi cult experience and we must not lose sight of the pressure that the youngsters are put under to secure places. It would be great to accept all applicants but we are very aware of the need to restrict future growth.” We look forward to welcoming our new intake in September.
