AKC DELEGATES REPORT One discussion by the Dog Show Rules committee The held its quarterly Delegates concerned reinstatement of a dog following disqualification meeting in Orlando, Florida on Dec . 13 & 14, followed by for aggression . It apparently happens more often than we the AKC Eukanuba National show on Dec . 15 & 16 . The idea Whippet people are aware that dogs bite judges, handlers of combining Delegate business with a visit to the show or show officials . They are then disqualified, but can be was probably one reason for the large number of delegates reinstated if a committee of three judges examines the present . (My guess would be there were at least 400 ). dog and agrees it’s safe . Recently one committee member was badly bitten during a reinstatement examination; even Thursday, December 13 was devoted to Delegate when that doesn’t happen, how can the committee be sure Committee meetings, several of which were held the dog that was originally disqualified isn’t replaced by a simultaneously . It’s obviously impossible to attend all “ringer” for the examination? (Easily done in the case of of them, so let me just mention a few items . solid-colored dogs ). The dangers involved were highlighted The Canine Health committee announced another Parent when one of the Eukanuba World Challenge finalists was Club Health Conference for August this year . I trust the disqualified for aggression later in the weekend and could AWC Board will be informed directly . not compete further .

The All-Breed Clubs committee discussed the Owner- AWC PROPOSAL ON ICE Handler series, created to “celebrate the dedication and I spent a lot of time at the Dog Show Rules committee enthusiasm of owner-handler exhibitors ”. Go to www .akc . meeting, since the proposal AWC submitted last summer org/ohs/events cf. m to find shows that offer owner-handler was on the agenda . The committee never got that far, competition . (A Whippet, Kerrie Kuper’s GCh . Karasar’s however; discussions on what seemed to me fairly trivial Remembrence, is No . 1 All Breeds in the current annual subjects took too much time . (Should Reserve BIS be rankings ). Discussion about a future proposal to reduce the announced before BIS or after? What colors should the number of Delegates meetings from four to three per year Reserve BIS ribbon be? Can prize ribbons be allowed indicated that most are in favor of maintaining the current to be undated, so clubs can re-use leftovers for future number . (I would prefer fewer meetings and instead adding shows? Etc . etc ). a day or two to those that remain in order to save travel and expense for delegates who don’t live on the East Coast, The AWC proposal is meant to encourage rule changes where currently all Delegates meetings take place ). that would result in greater participation in AKC shows by novices, owner-handlers, breeder-judges and other The Parent Club committee addressed the Breeder of Merit neglected core groups . It has been the subject of lively and Parent Clubs of Excellence projects, which are being debate on the Delegates e-mail list and will also be revised, with suggested changes sent to the AKC Board . published in the Delegates newsletter . To have real effect it The AKC Dog Book was discussed; parent clubs have been needs to result in recommendations sent to the AKC Board, asked to contribute text and photos for the next edition, and however . The Chairman of the All-Breeds Clubs committee, obviously we in AWC are not alone in our concern about the Ann Wallin, suggested I should submit the proposal in a copyright contracts we were asked to sign . It was pointed out condensed form to her before the next Delegates meeting, that all AKC mail to parent clubs MUST go to the Delegate, and promised the issues will be discussed then . to the President and to the Secretary of each club; I’m not sure that’s always been the case in the past . For AWC members who are not familiar with the proposal, here are some of the suggestions: 1) A survey of novice The committee revealed that “Meet the Breeds” at the exhibitors and new fanciers needs to be conducted in AKC Eukanuba show got tremendous response, with 159 order to establish how they feel AKC shows could be more parent clubs represented . Unfortunately, AWC was not one enjoyable; 2) Some of the AKC restrictions on breeder- of them . I believe that omission will be rectified at next judges must be eased; 3) More titles should be added year’s show . This is a great opportunity to provide good PR — Junior Ch’s, Veteran Ch’s, Multi-Purpose Ch’s, etc ;. for our breed . 4) Spayed and neutered dogs should be allowed to be Also mentioned was that dogs that pass the Canine Good shown, if necessary in special classes, possibly not for Citizen test will be able to use CGC as a title after their BOB competition; 5) The dress code that demands handlers names, starting January 1st . By mid-December AKC had wear business attire must be related; and 6) A Regional already received over 1,200 applications for the new title . Ratings System that ranks dogs within their own region, not The cost for applying is $20 . nationwide, should be introduced . The afternoon’s caucus made it clear that AWC is not alone in feeling most AKC shows need to be more encouraging of 6 | THE WHIPPET NEWS JANUARY 2013 newcomers . Speaker after speaker agreed that they feel the The Delegate body is so large (every AKC member club future of dog shows is endangered by a decrease in entries, is represented) that it’s difficult for it to take united action caused by the fact that AKC shows don’t offer a particularly when necessary . As a new Delegate last year I didn’t enjoyable environment for most dog fanciers . Many of understand the sense of frustration felt by many, but I do us can probably take some blame for not being more now . It’s expensive and time-consuming to attend the welcoming to new exhibitors and spectators, but changes in Delegates meetings, but it’s the only way open for member AKC rules and restrictions would also help . clubs to participate in AKC affairs .

VIDEO HIGHLIGHT THE AKC EUKANUBA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP The minutes of the Delegates meeting, held the next day, The AKC Eukanuba National Championship, held over the are on AKC’s website . A highlight was viewing a brilliant next two days, was a really impressive dog show, with the 2-minute video (“This is Zephyr”), produced by Diana Chan, emphasis on “show ”. The many activities beyond regular junior handler and film student major . AKC could use it as a conformation judging meant that almost anyone who’s promotional tool for purebred dogs and dog shows . View at interested in dogs could find something to watch . If all AKC www youtube. .com/watch?v=ll1U-dpQbyU events resembled this one I’m sure dog shows would be much more popular with many more people . A main point of interest was the introduction of nominees for four vacancies on the AKC Board of Directors, to be Whippets were judged by Gretchen Bernardi . WHIPPET RESCUE AND PLACEMENT (WRAP)

The WRAP General Meeting will be after the conclusion of Friday’s regular class judging. All exhibitors and participants are invited to attend – you need not be a member of WRAP. Come on over to meet our members and hear our report!

The Parade of Rescues is a rescue Whippet’s chance to shine in the ring! All rescue Whippets, regardless of where they were rescued from, are invited to participate. There is guaranteed to be a rescue there to steal your heart! The Parade of Rescues will be on Friday evening, 4/26/2013, approximately one hour after the end of judging for the day, and before the Parade of Honors. Donations for the Whippets and registrations for the Parade are now being accepted. If you have items to donate for the rescue Whippets or wish to register your Whippet for the Parade of Rescues, please contact Ruth Beall, [email protected].

Please send the below requested information for the parade to:

Ruth Beall at [email protected] no later than April 15, 2013: • Owner’s name / e-‐mail address / phone number • Rescue’s name / age • Photo(s) of your rescue Whippet, to be included in the slide show at the WRAP table • Short Bio (about 2 paragraphs) about your rescue that can be read while you and your rescue Whippet are in the ring

WRAP, AWC, and the Whippet Health Foundation will jointly share the raffle tables, with proceeds split three ways.

WRAP’s silent auction will begin on Tuesday and end on Friday. Please visit the WRAP table to view the items!

If you have items to donate for the Parade of Rescues, raffle or silent auction, please contact Ruth Beall, [email protected]. All items must be received no later than April 1, 2013, if you are not delivering them to the National yourself.

Please check the WRAP website, http://www.whippet-‐rescue.com, for more information as it is available on WRAP activities at the National Specialty.

JANUARY 2013 THE WHIPPET NEWS | 31 The Wrap Report By Libby Rice

CARING FOR CHLOE By Missouri WRAP Volunteer Libby Rice In March of 2012 I received a call from a person who wished to surrender their five-year-old female to WRAP because the Whippet was “bowling over” their toddler . They had older children and said she was “kid friendly,” but she was just was too excitable around the baby and kept knocking him down . He also mentioned “Chloe was a little skinny ”. I agreed to meet them but must say I was not prepared for the dog I saw . A friend of mine went along and when we arrived at the meeting place we saw this pathetically skinny dog being walked in the parking lot . I realized this was the Whippet I was picking up! This poor little dog was so skinny I could not believe she was even alive . Every bone in her body was visible . She had bare spots all over her body from malnutrition . Her tail had no hair at all . She looked up at me with those big sad brown even survive . When the veterinarian saw her, he said she eyes, but with a happy wagging tail and I knew then I had was the skinniest dog he had ever seen that could still walk . to try and help her . I asked the owner about her veterinarian His initial impression was that Chloe most likely had a records and he said she had only been once as a puppy, to parasitic infection or a serious illness . He ran blood work be spayed . No regular vaccines, no heartworm preventative, and a fecal and surprisingly found nothing wrong with her . no checkups, nothing!! He did say that they had recently There seemed to be no obvious explanation for why she changed her food back to a puppy feed to try to get her was so skinny . Although she would inhale as much food as to gain some weight . I would give her, I began feeding her several small meals a Most of us who are involved with rescue have experienced day and we could see the weight coming back immediately . the temptation to judge and to voice our feelings when It was amazing . We quickly realized that Chloe was one of encountering situations like this and this case was no the sweetest and smartest Whippets we had ever known . exception . As difficult as it was to be nice to him, I did Happy and a real pleaser, she learned to sit and down and suggest they take their Labrador to the Veterinarian and stay in no time! have it checked out and The local dog show was in town the weekend after Chloe vaccinated . I really just arrived and I was concerned all the commotion from a wanted to get this poor houseful of people and dogs might upset her, but to the little girl in the car and out contrary . Chloe seemed to think everyone had come of there . In the owner’s specifically to see and hold her . She stole everyone’s defense, he did seem hearts and they were fighting over who was going to to care about Chloe’s adopt her and take her home with them . Of course I had well-being and he gave to keep reminding my friends that she was a rescue and a donation to help pay needed a special home where she would be the center of for her vet bill . attention and not have to compete for love with several When I got Chloe home other whippets because the others would surely become she ate as if she was neglected with her around to steal all the glory . indeed starving! Despite Chloe gained weight, her hair started growing back and her condition, she was in a couple weeks she looked like a different girl . The such a happy girl and I veterinarian couldn’t believe the transformation when she felt so sorry for her . I took went back for her follow up exam . He honestly thought I her to the veterinarian the would lose her due to the bad condition she had been in . next morning for an exam We decided that it was likely that her previous owners must and to find out what was wrong with her . have been feeding Chloe and the Labrador together and she was simply not getting anything to eat . She was actually being starved to death . With Chloe on the mend, I was faced with the reality that Chloe was going to be fine and I would have to place her . I knew this was going to be one of the hardest rescues for me to part with because I had fallen in love with this sweet girl on day one . It would take just the right home for me to let her go and she still had several weeks of rehab before she would be ready (which meant several more weeks for me to love her more!) . But, I knew Chloe was ready to be placed when her figure started to look more like she needed to be on a diet rather than looking like she was starving . I had received an application from a potential home that looked really promising and it was time for them to meet Chloe . They were experienced Whippet people who had lost two older Whippets . Missy,Missy, Muffin Muffinand Rourke and Rourke: A Holiday story of love and support for two Whippets and their owner in a dire time of need.

I was in Colorado visiting my elderly father over the holidays when I read a very sad message on the Whippet-L internet discussion list from a fellow member named Missy Ferguson on Christmas Day. She explained that she was due to be evicted Wednesday, January 2nd from her apartment in Flanders, NJ. She had 2 whippets she was desperate not to lose and was asking only for foster care for them. Something in her message struck a chord within me so I e-mailed her to see what the story was. Missy explained how she had lost her job as a corporate paralegal 2 years ago when it was outsourced to India. She had been taking care of elderly parents who had since passed and she had used up all of her savings just paying to live...like so many people do today when illness, tragedy or difficulties strike. She worked diligently to find a job but had come up short repetitively. She became ill herself a few months ago and was unable to work. She sold almost everything she owned to stay in her apartment, including heirlooms inherited from her parents and most of her furniture, but she had run out of funds and was headed to a women's shelter. She did not want to relinquish her beloved dogs (Muffin, 12 and Rourke, 7) and just wanted to know if anyone could take care of them until she was on her feet again. She originally had someone lined up but just before Christmas he took a job that required 12 hour shifts and neither felt this was fair to the dogs. To say she was desperate in her original e-mail is an under- statement. Missy with Rourke as a puppy

I e-mailed a few people who live on the east coast and a few who live in Missy's Muffin relative area and within a day we had 4 solid foster homes ready and waiting to take the dogs (even one rescue person...those guys are amazing). However, it had also occurred to me that if she was indeed evicted it may be impossible for her to find an apartment that would rent to her in the future, and especially if she had dogs. I thought an eviction may end up in eventual forced relinquishment so I tried to figure out a way to prevent that. I asked Missy if I could raise one month's rent for her ($1085), would her landlord allow her to stay and give me a month to raise the remainder she was behind (October, November, December)? She said she would ask him on the 26th and she did. He told her she had to come up with 3 months back rent, January's rent, legal fees and court costs ($5094) by December 31st to keep from being evicted.

As precious hours passed, Missy was becoming more frantic and decided to make a plea to the list for funds. Many people became skeptical when a request for money was made publical- ly and that is when a complete angel entered the picture, Eliza- beth Gelb-O'Connor. Liz lives near Missy and was also sensi- tive to her plight. Originally she volunteered to foster the Whippets but when people started to doubt the legitimacy of the situation, she made the effort to go meet Missy. She videotaped Missy and the two Whippets as well as the property manager. After this, I spoke at length with Liz to try and figure out what the best way would be to help Missy. In the end, I decided it was worth trying to raise the money to keep Missy, Muffin and Rourke together and avoid sending senior dogs to rescue and Rourke their owner to a shelter.

50 | THE WHIPPET NEWS JANUARY 2013 My Whippets are everything to me. Everything. They bring me comfort, they love me un- conditionally and I depend on them daily for a large part of what keeps me going. I kept thinking how I would feel if my dogs were going to be taken away from me and honestly...I would have a hard time wanting to go another day. While I was supposed to be getting ready for my sister's Christmas party I snuck downstairs to her computer and made my request on Friday afternoon to the Whippet-L list and to Facebook. I asked the Whippet community to help and had no idea what to expect. I thought I would only be at the computer a few minutes but within seconds of posting I started getting notices of donations via Paypal. I ended up sitting in front of that computer watching the love and support flow for more than 2 hours. It was a sight to behold and definitely a prayer answered. I am not sure I have felt that good about fellow man in my entire life:-).

Many people apologized for not donating more. Some had been through similar situations and were paying it back. Some paid it forward and many donated in the spirit of 26 acts of kindness in memory of Sandy Hook. We had 2 very large donations but in the end, we could have made the bill due the landlord on donations of $50 or less.....the Whippet community stepped up that much. This truly showed me how every dollar helps, how a little effort made by many adds up to one huge effort to help someone who needs it most. In LESS THAN 8 HOURS we made the $5094 due the land- lord. Up to the time of this writing we have received $8784.07 from more than 85 donors!!! Liz presented Missy and her landlord with a check on New Years Eve for $5094. The remaining balance will be used to help Missy with dog food, any medications the dogs may need, gas for the car to get to job interviews and anything else that is needed to help keep Missy and her Whippets together. If we end up not having to utilize all of the donations we have collected, they will be donated to the Brigette Greenberg fund with WRAP which helps keep people and dogs together in hard times.

There are really no words to describe what this community has done. Someone asked. You answered. I have always been proud to be a Whip- pet owner and to associate with the people involved in our breed but never more than now. This was selfless and a community coming together in hard financial times. I am staying in contact with Missy and she is work- ing hard to find a job. She is also getting some assistance from the county to help supplement rent and food. The dogs are up to date on health care needs and have a full years supply of Heartgard and Frontline. I have a complete list of donors (which will remain private) and where each penny goes if anyone has any questions. If anyone is still interested in donating, just send me an e-mail.

To anyone reading this who gave to our friend in need, thank you from the bottom of my heart for making Christmas a true Celebration this year!
