A Beautiful Day by the River After a lot of work raising funds, restoring the S.A.M.E.

memorial on the banks of The Avon at Wasperton and researching the details of the two crashed bombers and crew members, the rededication service on Saturday, 9 April, was a successful and moving occasion. Blessed by glorious weather and attended by over a hundred and fifty people from the Benefice and from further afield, Rev’d David Jessett led a short service, remembering the ten young aircrew who died by the River Avon, now listed on the memorial plaque, and all airmen who have lost their lives in conflict. Group Captain Peter Wood, RAAF, (Australian High Commission in London), accompanied by Major Rob Johnson, (Canadian High Commission in London), the Royal British Legion and the Air Training Corps, all in full uniform, gave relevance and gravitas to the occasion. By chance, a black swan, native to Australia, swam past the memorial just as they arrived, to the surprise and delight of Group Captain Wood. Local Ralph Davis playing ‘The Last Post’ by the memorial. representatives included Councillor Bertie Mackay, (Chair, W.D.C.), Councillor and Mrs Eric Payne, (Deputy Chair, S.D.C.), Councillor William Dowling, (Mayor Elect, Stratford Town Council), Councillor John Murphy, (Chair, Barford, Sherbourne and Wasperton JPC), and Councillor Sue Main, (Chair, Hampton Lucy P.C.), along with many others associated with the memorial. Dr Ken Cockshull laid a wreath in the form of an RAF Roundel. With the standards of The Royal British Legion and the Air Training Corps dipped, ‘The Last Post’, beautifully played by Ralph Davis, preceded the Two-Minute Silence. Then followed the ‘Reveille’, and the haunting ‘Kohima Epitaph’; “When you go home, tell them of us and say; for your tomorrow we gave our today” . Many visitors stayed for a while to enjoy the peace of the riverside before making their way back to Wasperton Village Hall for refreshments, provided and served by the residents of Wasperton and Hampton Lucy. We would like to say a big “thank you” to everyone who helped to make the day such a success, too many to name but all very much appreciated. A booklet will be available in the summer; details from Kath Wright, [email protected] or Ken Cockshull, [email protected] KW/KC/AJW

VL Hampton Lucy Churchyard Tidy-up Following a good turnout in March, the churchyard is starting to take shape. However, everything continues to grow and another session is planned for Saturday, 7 May, from 10am to 12 noon. All volunteers will be welcomed with open arms, but please bring your own tools. Coffee and tea will be provided. SB News from the Cathedral Preparations for the Golden Jubilee in 2012 are underway. There will be a Festival from May to September. Michael Foster (Events Manager) has produced a wonderful programme of events. The highlight will be the service celebrating fifty years since the Cathedral’s consecration on 25 May, 1962. The Archbishop of Canterbury will be preaching and a member of the Royal Family may be present. As part of the Golden Jubilee, there are plans for the recasting of the ruins as a National Memorial to all civilians who have lost their lives through war and conflict. The Rev’d Canon David Stone, (Precentor), announced that the Cathedral hoped to invite all of the Diocesan church choirs to come and sing. He asked what parishes might like to do to help the Cathedral celebrate its Jubilee? Peter Woodward, (Chair of the Cathedral Friends), spoke of the responsibility of Christians to be good stewards of The Earth. The Cathedral is in negotiation with EOS to begin a Solar Roof Club - an opportunity to have solar panels installed in the home, generating your own electricity. EOS will donate a minimum of five percent of each installation to the Cathedral. AB

As the Spring Term draws to a close, we can look back on a successful term at Loxley School. As you may have read in The Grapevine , during a visit to the Church earlier this year, some of the children found an old suitcase. After some investigation, they discovered it belonged to a time-traveller called Professor Prospero Hermes. The Foundation/KS1 children celebrated the Chinese New Year by preparing a special Chinese meal, which they all enjoyed tasting! The KS2 children visited the Falstaff Experience , and the whole school visited , particularly looking at the Tudor buildings, researching their topic on The Tudors. Foundation/KS1 children built a Tudor bakery in their classroom and baked some delicious bread. In March, the whole school had a great time when the Queen visited Stratford-upon- Avon. The atmosphere was really exciting, with the crowds Giosué, Rory, Imogen and Abigale try their hand cheering and waving flags as she arrived. The children supported at Tudor dancing. the Red Nose Appeal by coming to school wearing their pyjamas and raising over £120 in sponsorship. Mothering Sunday was celebrated by making posies of flowers and writing poems for their mums, which they presented at the Family Mothering Sunday Service in Loxley Church. Finally, to end the Spring Term, the Friends of Loxley School organised the annual Easter Egg Hunt, in addition to The Pancake Race and the regular quiz nights which they had organised earlier in the term. The school is very grateful to the FOLS for their fundraising, and to the licensees of ‘The Fox’ for providing the venue for many of the events. HC

KC disappointed!) ‘whalebone’ Strut their Stuff Hampton Lucy Village Hall Committee staged yet another really enjoyable musical evening on Saturday, 26 March, when ‘whalebone’ , an all-acoustic ‘rootsy tootsy folk group’ (as they describe themselves), played to a full house of local residents and visitors. The programme featured some of their own delightful compositions, along with well known classics such as Londonderry Air, Stairway to Heaven and The Boxer , all beautifully arranged and performed. Unusually, the group doesn’t feature a vocalist, but that emphasises the arrangement and delivery of the music which moved seamlessly from boisterous heel-tapping pieces like ‘ The Wenlock Hare’ to quietly evocative musical portraits such as ‘Corndon Morning’ . With Steve Downs on lead guitar, wild blonde hair flying in fine style, Charlotte Watson quietly supporting on rhythm and backing guitar, and Sarah Ibberson letting rip on the fiddle, their music reflected the obvious enjoyment that showed in their faces. It proved to be another great night. “Thank you” to all those involved in arranging the evening, and especially Steve Henderson for stepping in at the last minute to run the bar - an essential requirement for a folk night!
