EDITORIAL THIS issue of the Journal while not intended to be a "Special" on Psychiatry does contain three papers on psychiatric sUbjects. The scope of these articles indicates the wide and diverse responsibilities of the Army Psychiatrist. Combat Psychiatry and Preventive Aspects of Mental Health is perhaps especially relevant when a large number of British soldiers, although not at war, are involved in rhe extremely frustrating situations as exist in Northern Ireland. There in spite .of the dangers and the difficulties morale is extremely high and this in no small way is due to the appreciation of Commanders and Staff Officers that good man management is one of their most effective and important weapons. The relation of psychiatry to the Serviceman's Family is of equal importance and this is especially so in overseas theatres where dependants form a significant part of the work of the Army Psychiatrist and much evidence has been brought forward to suggest that these families have real problems which require highJy specialised attention. This article is also timely when one realises that many families have the

anxiety and worry of being separated from their husbands who are on an unaccompanied guest. Protected by copyright. tour in Northern Ireland. Finally, the question of Drug Misuse and the Soldier, is a matter of concern for all responsible for the soldier's well being. Without being unduly complacent or dogmatic it can be said with confidence that this problem is being contained.
