Issue 483 www.edgecommunitynews.co.za 09 March 2016 TIME TO ORANGE UP!

SMUTSVILLE LOCALS INTIMIDATED BY ARMED MAN

Several members of the Smutsville community have come forward to The EDGE complaining that a man arrested last year for murder is not only still wandering the streets, but, they allege, he is regularly seen brandishing a firearm. Questions are being raised as to why he is not behind bars. The man, Ayanda Mchitheka, was taken into custody last year February, following the fatal shooting of Dunovan Bond. Witnesses at the time claimed that Mchitheka had been fooling around with a pistol which went off, severely wounding Bond and ultimately ending his life. Mchitheka was arrested two hours later, but then released whilst the case was being investigated. He was still out and about in October last year, much to the horror of Dunovan’s mother Jacqui Salmons. When a query about this was sent to SAPS, The EDGE was informed that the docket had not been placed on the court role at the time of Mchitheka’s arrest, due to a lack of evidence. We were assured that further investigation was continuing, and that the man was due to stand before the judge in November that year. But he is still on the streets, and according to some residents (names withheld for obvious reasons) he is not shy to point his firearms (they allege he has several) in the direction of anyone who crosses him. They also claim that he has been seen running from the police, somehow managing to evade arrest. Queries to SAPS regarding the case are yielding no results, but a reliable source has informed us that Mchitheka was picked up in December last year for possession of an illegal firearm. But it seems he is back on the streets again. Asked if she had been given any details regarding the investigation of her son’s murder, Jacqui Salmons said that she is aware that Mchitheka is due to appear in court on Tuesday 15 March. With response from the SAPS Communication department not forthcoming, we asked the CPsF Chair for Sector Six Mike Hofhuis for comment. He said that they have been informed of Mchitheka’s actions and would be circulating a petition against his bail for community members to sign. “This is, of course, presuming that he arrives for his day in court," Hofhuis said.

With just over two weeks to go before the 2016 Sedgefield Slow Festival kicks off, there is once again an appeal for the townsfolk to get into ‘orange gear’!

According to Festival organiser Amanda Dixon, the workings of the Slow Fest are falling into place, and the hard-working committee are busy doing everything they can to ensure that all the events will go as smoothly as possible.

“And now it is time for the community to really start ‘getting their orange on’,” she said. Traditionally many of Sedgefield’s business owners have made every effort to bedeck their windows, walls and floors with orange regalia as part of The EDGE ‘Get Orange’ competition, and this year the appeal is for them to do the same... but earlier! Indeed extra points will be awarded by the judges (there’s great advertising prizes to be won) for businesses who have ‘oranged up’ by Wednesday 16th. It goes without saying that even those who don’t win will benefit in making the town that much more attractive - in an off the wall kind of way - to visitors and locals.

A further appeal is also being put out for local residents (those who are Slow Festival Fans - which we hope includes EVERYONE) to start getting into orange mode too. Be it a t-shirt, a hat, a scarf or a car decoration... Perhaps even - for those brave enough - a lick of orange paint on the front gate? Start wearing it, sporting it, painting it from now. The more orange Sedgefield gets, the more the our Slow Festival excitement will build. cool dude?” I…. HOSPICE lost one of its much beloved volunteers on the 14th February 2016. Audrey Collins being a trained nurse started off in Hospice practicing her nursing to some of the patients until a head nurse was appointed. She worked as a volunteer at the Knysna Hospice shop on Friday afternoons where she enjoyed the camaraderie of her fellow volunteers. She then became involved on the fundraising side, organising jumble sales, cake sales and book sales. There was a Blue Moon Garden Party and Mad Hatters Tea parties and to quote Audrey “Raising money can be a lot of fun”. She also made soup regularly for the day care patients. Audrey was a well-known visitor to the business communities of Sedgefield as she placed all of the fund raising tins in the shops etc. and collected them once they were full. In the past year this had been taken on by Judy. Apart from her work for Hospice she also helped out at the Smutsville School with reading to ______the children and helping them with their English.
