DID YOU KNOW By James Jones, ParishionerN RIGHTS Did you know that the State of denies all human rights to an identified group of human beings? On May 28, the State legislated that “A fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus does not have independent rights under the laws of this State.” (Illinois Re- productive Health Act, Section 1-15 (c)). The Act is awaiting the expected signature of the Governor.

The Supreme Court ruled in Roe (1973) that a child has the right to life after the first trimester of pregnancy. RHA strips the life in the womb of any rights even up to moments before birth. What legal, scientific or moral reasoning did the legisla- tors offer to support their opinion? None. The legislators of- fered nothing beyond the usual health danger propaganda. The law-makers mendacity is easy to understand. There is no legal, scientific or moral basis for deciding that the child in the womb has no independent rights.

Why are the legislator’s so wordy? Why reference “fertilized egg, embryo or fetus” when a simpler, more comprehensive term like “human” would suffice? That’s not difficult to under- stand. While the legislators may be uneasy about denying all legal rights to any human, they are quite comfortable denying rights to a “fertilized egg.” Ironically, the RHA may face a Supreme Court challenge. It was the Supreme Court who de- creed that children do have legal rights after the first trimester of pregnancy that Illinois denies.

The RHA has also had a dramatic impact on Catholics. Follow- ing the legislation, , Diocese of Spring- field, Illinois, decreed “In accord with canon 915 of the Code of Canon Law...Illinois Senate President and Speaker of the House Michael J. Madigan … are not to be ad- ADVERTISER OF THE WEEK mitted to Holy Communion in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois because they have obstinately persisted in promoting the Lori L.
