Roma moved to the top of Group G with an emphatic home win against CSKA Moskva on matchday three and travel to Russia for the reverse fixture looking for more of the same. • Edin Džeko scored twice in the first half in Rome and set up Cengiz Ünder for the other five minutes into the second period as Roma made it two wins in a row. • That gave the Italian side six points, level with Real Madrid, and took them above CSKA, who have four points. Viktoria Plzeň have a single point to their name, meaning the Czech champions will be unable to finish in the top two if they lose and Roma win in Russia – where the Giallorossi are unbeaten. Previous meetings • Roma picked up four points when the sides met in the 2014/15 group stage, winning 5-1 in Italy – the only home victory in the clubs' four contests prior to matchday three – before a 1-1 draw in Russia. • In the 1991/92 European Cup Winners' Cup first round, Roma went through on away goals thanks to a 2-1 first-leg win in Moscow; the Giallorossi progressed despite a 1-0 reverse in the home return. Form guide CSKA Moskva • Having come from two goals down to salvage a point at Plzeň on matchday one, CSKA built on that result as Nikola Vlašić – who had scored an added-time penalty equaliser against Plzeň – got the only goal, in the second minute, to defeat Real Madrid in Moscow. • This is CSKA's 12th UEFA Champions League campaign, equalling the Russian record previously held alone by Spartak Moskva. • In 2017/18 CSKA finished third behind Manchester United and Basel in their UEFA Champions League section, going on to beat Crvena zvezda and Lyon in the UEFA Europa League before losing to Arsenal in the quarter-finals (1-4 away, 2-2 home). • The Russian club won four of their eight European home games in 2017/18 (D1 L3), although they lost two of three in the group stage. • Excluding qualifying ties, and despite the win against Madrid, CSKA have won only three of their last 12 European home fixtures (D4 L5). • CSKA have lost three of their last five European fixtures at home to Italian clubs (W1 D1), all the defeats coming against Internazionale – including in the last such encounter, a 3-2 reverse in the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League group stage. Roma • Having opened with a 3-0 loss at holders Real Madrid, the Italian side bounced back by beating Plzeň 5-0 on matchday two, their record UEFA Champions League victory. • Third in Serie A in 2017/18, Roma are in the group stage for an 11th time and the fourth in five years. • Roma, runners-up in the 1983/84 European Cup, reached the semi-finals last season, losing to Liverpool. They finished top of a group including Chelsea and Atlético Madrid, before beating Shakhtar Donetsk and Barcelona in the knockout rounds – the latter particularly memorable, as a 4-1 away defeat was followed by a 3-0 victory at the Stadio Olimpico – before succumbing to Liverpool. • The loss in Madrid on matchday one made it five successive away defeats in Europe for Roma. They lost all three away matches in last season's knockout rounds – conceding 11 goals in the process – and also went down 2-0 at Atlético on matchday five. • Roma won only one of their six away games in last season's UEFA Champions League – 2-1 at Qarabağ on matchday two – and have tasted victory in only three of their last 18 European away encounters (D6 L9). • The Giallorossi are, however, unbeaten in Russia, winning on their first three visits before that 1-1 draw with CSKA in 2014.. 8 PFC CSKA Moskva - AS Roma Wednesday 7 November 2018 - 18.55CET (20.55 local time) Match press kit Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow Head coach Viktor Goncharenko Date of birth: 10 June 1977 Nationality: Belarusian Playing career: RUOR Minsk, BATE Borisov Coaching career: BATE Borisov, Kuban Krasnodar, Ural Sverdlovsk Oblast, CSKA Moskva (assistant), Ufa, CSKA Moskva • His career as a BATE defender ended at 25 because of ruptured left knee ligaments, Goncharenko immediately switched to coaching, taking over the club's reserves and guiding them to second-placed finishes in 2005 and 2006 before graduating to become assistant to head coach Igor Kriushenko. • In 2007 he replaced Kriushenko on a temporary basis when the latter developed health problems and guided BATE to five wins in his six matches in charge. When Kriushenko departed for FC Dinamo Minsk in November 2007, Goncharenko got his big break with the newly-crowned champions; won the first of five successive league titles with BATE in 2008, and took them into the UEFA Champions League group stage in 2008/09, drawing twice with Juventus. • BATE won a domestic double in 2010 and Goncharenko – who had lifted the 1999 and 2002 titles as a player – was also feted as his nation's coach of the year for three years in a row between 2008 and 2010. • Twice reached the UEFA Europa League group stage, going on to the round of 32 in 2010/11. Added another league title in 2011 and took BATE into the UEFA Champions League group stage for second time, achieving another notable draw against AC Milan. BATE returned to the group stage for the third time in five seasons in 2012/13, beating LOSC Lille and eventual winners FC Bayern München. • Won the 2012 Belarusian title but elected to take charge of Russian side Kuban in October 2013. Lasted a year at Kuban and then six games with Ural in 2015. Won the Russian title as CSKA assistant coach under Leonid Slutski and returned to the Moscow side as head coach in December 2016 after six months at Ufa, leading the Army Men to the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League quarter-finals and a runners-up spot in the domestic league. Eusebio Di Francesco Date of birth: 8 September 1969 Nationality: Italian Playing career: Empoli, Lucchese, Piacenza (twice), Roma, Ancona, Perugia Coaching career: Virtus Lanciano, Pescara, Lecce, Sassuolo (twice), Roma • A pacy winger known as 'Turbo', Di Francesco came through Empoli's youth system, making his Serie A debut in 1987/88. His career really took off at Piacenza between 1995 and 1997, when he earned himself a move to Roma. Transformed into a midfielder by Zdeněk Zeman, he spent four seasons at the Stadio Olimpico, winning the 2000/01 Scudetto although he played only five games that campaign. • Having retired in 2005 after two more seasons at Piacenza and spells with Ancona and Perugia, Di Francesco – who won 12 caps for Italy – spent a year as a Roma director but the lure of coaching proved strong; that new venture began in his native Abruzzo, first with a brief stint at Lanciano before two campaigns with Pescara. • Appointed Lecce coach ahead of 2011/12 for his first Serie A experience, though it proved brief as Di Francesco was sacked after just 13 matches with his side bottom of the table. • Dropped back into Serie B the following season; a huge Zeman fan, Di Francesco – named after Portuguese legend Eusébio – had a brilliant start with Sassuolo using his mentor's 4-3-3 system and led the team from the Modena area into Serie A for the first time. • Coached Sassuolo in Serie A for four consecutive campaigns, although the first featured a short interruption as he was replaced for five games by Alberto Malesani only to return and help the side avoid relegation. Known for his entertaining attacking football, he steered Sassuolo to a first UEFA Europa League qualification by finishing sixth in Serie A in 2015/16 before replacing Luciano Spalletti as Roma coach in June 2017. In his first season he took the side into the last four of the UEFA Champions League thanks to a remarkable quarter-final comeback against Barcelona.
