New Sculpture “Enlighten” As part of the Cascade Hall project, there is a new sculpture on campus! Installed on June 18, “Enlighten” is the work of Sculptor Micajah Bienvenu and reflects and celebrates the community, inclusivity and inspiration of the Seattle Colleges system. The Arts in Public Places program facilitated the acquisition, placement, and stewardship of artwork as part of a state-funded building project. The Washington State Legislature established the AIPP program in 1974 to acquire artwork for K-12 public schools, colleges, universities, and state agencies, funded by ½ of 1 percent of the state’s portion of construction costs. Today, the State Art Collection includes more than 4,500 artworks that are sited where people study, work, and live. Headed by Marissa Laubscher from the Washington State Arts Commission, South Seattle College committee members Phyllis Gordon, Lily Allen, Mary Lindquist, Glenn Gauthier and Eden Tullis reviewed artist’s submissions from around the Country and unanamously chose Sculptor Micajah Bienvenu to create the scultpure for the the courtyard outside of Cascade Hall.

“Off White Whale” Finds New Home in Cascade Hall If you’ve walked though Cascade Hall recently, you may have noticed the magnificent woven sculpture hanging from the ceiling near the south entrance lobby. Titled “Off White Whale,” this 10-foot-long art piece was recently donated to South by Dr. Virginia Hoffman, retired Professor Emeritus at California State University-Los Angeles, as a gift to former South President Gary Oertli. The sculpture will remain a permanent fixture on campus. Combining woven, non-woven, hard and soft pieces, Off White Whale has been exhibited in New York, London and throughout California. The piece explores the idea of fluidity, using materials which are “pliable, changeable and even self-disposing.” A plaque near the art piece describes it in detail. A special thank you goes to South’s President Emeritus Gary Oertli, Seattle Colleges’ former Government Relations Director LaVerne Lamoureux and Wendy Nagasawa, Executive Assistant to the President, who were instrumental in bringing the sculpture to Cascade Hall. Page 13 Student Spotlight Gary Green, Homeless Veteran Finds Support System at South

For South Seattle College student veteran Gary Green, stepping foot on South’s campus last year meant returning to college after a 21-year gap, and setting himself on a path to a better future and a better life. “Walking into that classroom on the first day was pretty surreal,” says Gary, who enrolled in South’s First Step program in January 2017. The program helps students build a foundation in English, math, computer and college success skills before enrolling in a program at South. “One of our first assignments was to create oral presentations around a topic. I chose to talk about the stigma and stereotypes surrounding veterans, something I’ve dealt with and seen almost my whole life.” Born into a family of Navy veterans, Gary first joined the armed forces at the suggestion of his father in 1988 after graduating high school. At that time the new Montgomery G.I. Bill offered active duty members the opportunity to save money for college while serving. Much to his father’s dismay, Gary chose to enroll Since beginning the Welding & Fabrication Technology program in the U.S. Marines instead, hoping to travel the world. at South, Gary has found a support system in the Veterans Student Center on campus.
