9 Parliamentarians urged to get into golf

MPs and Peers were invited to Get into golf and to become champions for the grassroots game in their constituencies at a special event aimed at getting MPs tuned in to sport. Golf was one of the sports showcased national news national at the inaugural Parliamentary Sports Fair. It was organised by the Sport and Recreation Alliance as part of the #GetYourKitOn campaign, which urges continued investment in grassroots sport and recreation to create an active nation. The All Party Parliamentary Golf Group encouraged decision-makers to have a go at golf, to find out about England Golf’s Get into golf campaign and to learn about the health and well-being benefits of the game. They were given a fun introduction to the sport by Community Golf, which offers opportunities for disadvantaged and disabled people to play golf in Surrey and parts of Sussex, Kent and London. Richard Shaw, director and founder of Community Golf, said: “The day was fantastic and we had around 40 MPs and Peers have a go at our stand! We were certainly one of the busiest stands, which is fantastic for our sport.” Parliamentarians also heard about the Get into golf campaign, run by England Golf and supported by Sky Sports, which inspires more people to play the game and enjoy a sociable sport with many health benefits. According to the Sport and Recreation Alliance, the cost of health related conditions associated with inactivity, including obesity and diabetes, is costing the nation £7.4bn each year. Golf, the fifth most-played sport in England, has a tremendous reach across all backgrounds and abilities and can support the Government’s sports strategy to tackle inactivity. England Golf Chief Executive Nick Pink said: “Golf makes a huge contribution to the Government’s agenda to promote an active and healthy lifestyle. We’re very pleased to have this opportunity to involve MPs and Peers and hope they will join us to spread the message about the health benefits of golf and attract many more people to enjoy our great game.” Speaking after the event, Chair of the Parliamentary Golf Group and MP for Lincoln, Karl McCartney, said “I am delighted that Members of Parliament have had the opportunity to find out more about golf in their constituencies. Get into golf is a fantastic initiative to promote participation golf in communities across the UK, and we need to encourage Members of Parliament to learn more about the sport and its importance to the nation’s health and wellbeing.” The Sports Fair also marked the launch of the Sports and Recreation Alliance’s Get Your Kit On – A Guide to Grassroots Sport and Recreation. The guide is an online resource that is a hub of key information, contacts and resources to enable MPs to engage in Westminster debates as advocates for grassroots sport and at a community level promote local clubs with their activities. 13 Clark and Thompson named PGA Cup vice captains

Cameron Clark and Martyn Thompson

national news national have been named as PGA Cup vice captains to Albert MacKenzie for Great Britain & Ireland’s PGA Cup clash with the United States at Foxhills Club & Resort in 2017. The pair were both part of the victorious team that won at CordeValle in 2015 – Clark as a player and Thompson again as a vice captain. Clark, head PGA Professional at Moor Hall in Sutton Coldfield, admitted he was thrilled to be offered the role. “It’s massively exciting to be involved again,” he said. “If you can’t play this is the next best thing and I got such a buzz from last year when we won in California. From an experience point of view that was the best I’ve ever had and having my family there was a massive bonus as well. “I’m really honoured and proud to be asked. I think the pressure is probably on us to retain the trophy and try and get back to back wins but I know how strong the team will be – the standard in the regions and at the PGA Play-Offs is getting better and better.” Thomspon (pictured), head pro at Parkstone Golf Club in Dorset, resumes the role he fulfilled in California. His Dorset club has a strong association with the PGA Cup with former head pro Keith Hockey captaining GB&I to back to back wins in 1983 and 1984. “Last time was one of those weeks you never forget so to be asked to be involved again is a huge honour,” said Thompson. “For it to have panned out the way it did - the last putt, on the last hole in the last match with all the hard work we’d put where we said we’d got to do all the one per cents that make the difference – it was the greatest golf experience of my life and I’ve been lucky to play in a couple of majors and walk down the 18thin the 72nd hole of an Open Championship.”

November marks the end of one of the bloodiest battles ever in human history. The British Legion will gather on the morning of 18th November to remember

somme centenary over a million men on both sides of the conflict who found themselves casualties in an offensive that came to be known as the Battle of the Somme. Among these casualties are members of a golfing pals battalion, set up by pro from West Herts Golf Club.

In 1913, a founding member of the The Niblicks met in September 1914 at Gatti’s Professional Golfers’ Association, Albert Italian restaurant in Old Street, Central London, Tingey was running a golf school at where it was stipulated that recruits should be Fontainebleau near Paris. That afternoon, who would win the Open in 1920, and Charles 26 golf pros and assistants were passed fit for Mayo, Belgium Open Champion of 1911, he service and travelled to Winchester to join the named the unit the Niblick Brigade. 13th Battalion of The Rifle Brigade.

Tingey kept the nation updated on their exploits with a regular feature in Golf Monthly. They weren’t alone; by December 1915 the PGA reported that more than 120 golf pros and assistants were serving in the war. By August 1915, the Niblicks were in the trenches near Armentiéres. They saw some action but escaped unscathed. The most serious incident, reported by Tingey, was the loss of the B Company rum ration, which had to be retrieved with fishing rods after falling down a deep hole. While away from the front line the Niblicks held putting and long driving contests, with officers and men lining up to get tips from the pros. Three golf courses were built during the war – one at Ypres Salient by professional player and course designer Ramsey Ross from the Honourable Artillery Company, one in Flanders with the help of Scots pro Tom Femie of the Highland Light Infantry and one, designed by sports journalist Allan Gardiner of The Royal Irish Rifles, for the use of officers of the General Staff. Golfing magazine appealed to its readers to send balls to the front. Their price had trebled since the beginning of the war. The Niblicks’ first casualty came early in 1916, when Rifleman Herbert Line was hit in the face by a bullet but survived. It was to get more serious at the Battle of the Somme. On July 10, attached to the 34th Division, the Niblicks joined an attack at Contalmaison. The men battled across no man’s land and captured enemy trenches only to be ordered to withdraw. By the time they got back, the 13th Rifles had suffered 400 casualties. The Niblicks did not lose a man, although some were wounded. After further fighting at Mametz Wood and Bazentin, Surrey pro William Eastland was killed in The Battle of the Ancre, the last offensive of the Somme. He is buried in Contay Military Cemetery. The Niblicks fought to the end of the war, regularly reinforced by pros, greenkeepers, caddies and clubmakers. Albert Tingey survived and worked at Frinton-on-Sea, Essex. He died in 1953 aged 83.
