SUNDAY

A Celebration of Life in the Presence of Death

Almighty God, who hast compassed us about with so great a cloud of witnesses: Grant that we, encouraged by the good example of thy servants, may persevere in running the race that is set before us, until at length, through thy mercy, we may with them attain to thine eternal joy; through Jesus Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY November 1, 2020 11:15 REQUIEM EUCHARIST

It has been the custom in the Western Church to celebrate All Saints Day on November 1, remembering the lives of all Christians who have died. At our parish celebration of this festival, we remember by name all those close to the life of this parish who have died since last All Saints Day. The traditional way of remembering the dead has been through the requiem, a mass for the dead. The music of today’s Requiem for the Living is by Dan Forrest (b. 1978). It is offered by Coventry Choir, with soloists Kyla McCarrel, soprano, Kimberly Poli, mezzo-soprano, Daniel Ramon, tenor and Jim Campbell, baritone, accompanied by chamber orchestra and organ played by Grace Chung. Weicheng Zhao conducts. Requiem for the Living projects a wide range of meaningful expression, from a biting essay on the vanity and pain of humamankind to a plea for mercy, and finally a celebration of eternal light. The opening movement pleads for rest and mercy. The second movement sets scriptural texts that speak of the turmoil and sorrow which face humanity. The Sanctus offers three different glimpses of the “heavens and earth, full of Thy glory” including an ethereal opening section inspired by images of space from the Hubble Space Telescope, a stirring middle section inspired by images of our own planet as viewed from the International Space Station, and a closing section which brings the listener down to Earth, where cities teem with the energy of humanity. The Agnus Dei is a plea for deliverance and peace. The Lux Aeterna which then closes the work portrays light, peace, and rest — for both the deceased and the living. On this All Saints Sunday you may have additional emotional and spiritual care needs as we mourn and celebrate the lives of loved ones we have lost. Please remember that trained lay counselors are available through the Lay Counseling Ministry at 626.583.2706.

We honor the roots of our liturgical history by using the traditional language of Rite One from The Book of Common Prayer. The smoke from the incense is a symbol of prayer and the mystery of life and death.

PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP IN GOD’S NAME

VIDEO MEDITATION Len DeVane (reader); Jason Luckett (music); Alison Pill (video) Now we will praise our great heroes, the ancestors of our people from times long past. Our God gave them greatness and honor, they too reflected the greatness of God in ancient times. Some of them had power over great domains and gained their fame through their strength. Others were advisors who possessed great foresight and spoke with the power of prophets. Some led the people through their wisdom, and by their knowledge of the Law of Israel, teaching the people from their wealth of understanding. Some composed great music, others wrote great poetry. Still others possessed great wealth and power, living a life of ease in their estates. All of these were known for great honor and those among them took great pride in them. Some left behind them renown, and their stories are told to this day. Others are forgotten; passed away, as though they had never existed, as if they had never been born — and their children after them did the same. But it was different with our ancestors who were true to their faith; their virtuous deeds will be remembered forever. Their progeny will last for all time and respect for their names will never die. Their bodies are at peace but their names will continue forever. —Ecclesiasticus 44:1–10, 13–14

SALUTATION Mike Kinman Minister: Alleluia! Christ is risen! People: Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia!

COLLECT FOR PURITY Minister and People: Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Memorial Book is brought to the Chancel. In this book names of those connected with our parish who have died since last All Saints Day join those of previous years. Juan Mejia, Senior Warden

COLLECT FOR ALL SAINTS DAY Mike Kinman

Minister: The Lord be with you. People: And with thy spirit. Minister: Let us pray. Silence is kept. Minister and People: Almighty God, who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of thy Son, Christ our Lord: Grant us grace so to follow thy blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys which thou hast prepared for those who unfeignedly love thee; Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

SEQUENCE Sung by Coventry Choir. Vanitas vanitatum, omnia vanitas! Vanity of vanities, all is vanity! Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem. Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest. Lacrimosa, et locutus est, pereat dies in qua natus sum. Full of tears, they said, let the day perish wherein I was born.

GOSPEL Susan Russell

Minister: The Good News of Jesus as written in Matthew (5:1–12). People: Glory is yours, O Christ. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, the disciples came to him. Then Jesus began to speak, and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kindom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kindom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Minister: The Gospel of the Savior. People: Praise to you, O Christ.

CONCLUDING COLLECT Mike Kinman Minister: Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and giving life to those in the tomb. We commend to thee, O God of life, all who have died in the communion of thy Church, and those whose faith is known to thee alone, that, with all thy saints, they may have rest in that place where there is no pain or grief, but life eternal. May the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. People: And may light perpetual shine upon them.

PEACE Minister: The peace of Christ be always with you. People: And with thy spirit.

Greet one another in the name of Christ.

OFFERTORY SENTENCES Mike Kinman 12

OFFERTORY Sung by Coventry Choir.

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Holy, holy, holy Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Lord God of Sabaoth, Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua: Heaven and earth are full of your glory: Hosanna in excelsis. Hosanna in the highest.

The Altar is surrounded by the symbol of prayer in the incense.

GREAT THANKSGIVING Sally Howard Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And with thy Spirit.

Priest: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord.

Priest: Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God. People: It is meet and right so to do.

Priest: It is very meet, right and our bounden duty, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Lord, almighty and everlasting God. Who, in the multitude of thy saints, hast compassed us about with so great a cloud of witnesses, that we, rejoicing in their fellowship, may run with endurance the race that is set before us; and, together with them, may receive the crown of glory that fadeth not away. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee and saying, Priest and People: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the One that comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

CONSECRATION Priest: All glory be to thee, Almighty God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect offering for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death, until his coming again. 13

Priest: For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for all, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.” Wherefore, O God, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful God, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. And we earnestly desire thy everlasting goodness to accept this our offering of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O God, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, Almighty God, world without end. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, in the language of your heart, we are bold to say, Priest and People: Our Father, who art in heaven, Padre Nuestro que estás en el 我们在天上的父, hallowed be thy Name, cielo, santificado sea tu Nombre, 愿你的名被尊为圣,愿你的国降临, thy kingdom come, thy will be venga tu reino, hágase tu 愿你的旨意行在地上,如同行在天上。 done, on earth as it is in heaven. voluntad, en la tierra como en el 我们日用的饮食,求父今日赐给我们。 Give us this day our daily bread. cielo. POST-COMMUNION PRAYER Alfredo Feregrino Priest and People: Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness toward us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people: and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting Kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

* * * * * * * Language In Worship: Because language has the power to shape our thinking about one another, All Saints Church makes every effort to bring the language of worship into conformity with the principles of biblical theology that affirm that the personhood of God embraces all expressions of gender lovingly and equally. Therefore, in our worship, we take our Bible readings from an inclusive language lectionary, which is often truer to original sources in references to people, and expands our concept of God beyond exclusively masculine terms. In Prayer Book liturgies we make minimal but symbolically important changes which denote our commitment to inclusive expression. Some historical texts that are widely known and loved are left unaltered. The words of the liturgy are from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. The readings are from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, lectionary year A, as well as from The Message and from Inclusive Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament published by Priests for Equality.

New Link for All Saints Sunday: https://allsaints-pas.org/live-stream/ (The link above includes Children’s Chapel, the 11:15 a.m. & 1 p.m. services) Reminder – Set you clocks back one hour Saturday evening! All Saints Sunday It has been the custom in the Western Church to celebrate All Saints Day on November 1, remembering the lives of all who have died. At our parish celebration of this festival, we remember by name all those close to the life of this parish who have died since last All Saints Day. We will return to the beautiful interior of All Saints. Ministers of the liturgy will be observ- ing the social distance and safety protocols dictated by health care professionals and in compliance with our diocesan guide- lines. And while we all long for the time when we can safely return for in person congregational worship, being able to center our online service in our familiar and beloved sanctuary is one step toward that eventual goal. If you would like to ensure a loved one’s name is in our Memorial Book, please send to [email protected] and in subject line add “For Memorial Book 2020” 11:00-11:15 a.m. Children’s Chapel led by Kelly Erin O’Phelan Everyone is invited to light a candle with Kelly Erin and enjoy a story and a craft.

11:00-11:15 a.m. Meditative Chapel Chapel aims to be a liminal space between the hustle of life and household and a more tranquil, worshipful mindset. We’ll have a reading and a moment of meditation, you’ll just need yourself and a candle if you have one. Link will be provided on Sunday morning. Requiem Eucharist - 11:15 a.m. Coventry Choir and Chamber Orchestra, directed by Weicheng Zhao will offer Requiem for the Living by Dan Forrest. Mike Kinman preaches. Requiem for the Living projects a wide range of meaningful expression, from a biting essay on the vanity and pain of humamankind to a plea for mercy, and finally a celebration of eternal light.

Día de Los Santos y Fieles Difuntos - 1:00 p.m. Day of Saints and Faithful Departed Dan Cole & Ensemble offer music. Mike Kinman preaches. This is a festive and colorful celebration in which we honor our loved ones as they were when they were alive.

The Challenge: to flood social media with these non-partisan, non-political videos (shot on phones by ordinary Americans) of individuals answering the question, “Why do you wear a mask?” Bill, an Emmy-winning television writer (Frasier, Will & Grace, Roseanne) encouraged congregations across the United States to take up this sim- ple-yet-powerful action.
