WEST MALVERN is an ecclesiastical parish and mpidly-increasing' suburb of .'Malvern, situate chiefly in the .civil parish of Mathon, but in cludes also portion& of Cradley an.d Colwall in Herefordshire,. and Leigh in Worcestershire. It is distant 2t miles from Great Malvern round the hill, and I i over the hill; is in the western division of the county, Lower Pershore hundred, Ledbury union, Great Malvern county court. district, :Malvern Link polling district, 'Vorcester diocese and archdeaconry, and Powick rural deanery. The population in I86I was I,4I7, and in 187r, t,8ro; annual rateable value, £3,350. The church of St. 'Jame$ is well . worth an inspection. It has been rebuilt, and is a handsome stone struc ture in the Early English 'style, with nave, chancel, and about 400 sit tings, all of which are free and unappropriated. A new stained glass window, by Hardman & Co., of Birmingh~m, and a new clock (which strikes the quarters), by J oyce, of vVhitchurcb, have been erected to the memory of the late Mrs. Lane Freer, The register begins with the year I844· The living is a vicarage, value about £3oo, with residence, and two acres of glebe; patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Westminster; vicar, Rev. Charles Earle Freeman, 1\f.A., Hertford College, Oxford, who was instituted in 1856. The National school was considerably enlarged in 1873 by the addition of a. girls' and infants' school, and a·:master's residence, at a cost of £I, I oo. The .
