Problems in Charismatic Renewal 170 Selected bibliography PREFACE On Friday of Easter week, 1970, another priest and I, as if by chance, participated in a mass held at St. Boniface Charismatic Prayer Group. Afterwards, I met Brother Pancratius Boudreau, C.SS.R., who would teach me much of what is contained in this book. Since I was a chancery official, he was just a little uptight about the visit. Afterwards he told me that I really hadn’t experienced a prayer meeting and urged me to return. The furthest thing from my mind that night was a return. During the next few months a number of events occurred. My brother questioned me about the movement, since his wife had become involved with a charismatic group. I, myself, spent more than a month, January, 1971, recovering from a serious cold and infection. But most of all, during these months, a sense was coming over me of the great changes in the world and the new problems of the Church in the face of growing world powers. My part-time work in the Newman Apostolate grew more difficult with fewer results and less response to my ministry. On Palm Sunday, 1971, my sister-in-law took a few minutes to witness to me about all the changes that had occurred in her own life because of her involvement in the prayer group. Suddenly the lights went back on and the growing darkness in my life was immediately lifted. A few days later, I went to the bookstore and bought numerous books on Pentecostalism. The next Friday I called Brother Pancratius to ask about the time of the prayer meeting. At the end of the conversation, he remarked, “Weren’t you here about a year ago, Father?” “Oh, no, Brother,” I responded, “It was only about six months.” After putting down the phone, I tried to recall when that chance attendance occurred, and came to realize that my first meeting was precisely one year before – Easter Friday, 1970. As I stood in the front of the church, I could not get over the coincidence of having been there exactly one year previously. My thoughts were this: “What a difference one year makes. A year ago I was here and it meant almost nothing. Now, one year later, I am back and I realize that everything I am, or was or will be – my whole past, future and eternity – my whole priesthood –everything – is tied up with what is behind those doors.” I have passed through those doors and the three subsequent years have easily been the most satisfying, holy, fruitful years of my entire life. The thousands of words that follow have been written that many others might also walk through those doors into a deeper life in the Spirit. To the president Spirit of the Church in Philadelphia, write this: The Holy One, the true, 3 Who wields David’s key, Who opens and no one can close, Who closes and no one can open. (Rev. 3:7) EXPLANATION OF THE TITLE The title has been deliberately chosen from the message to the Church of Philadelphia, since I naturally drew upon the experiences of the Philadelphia Charismatic Groups. The word “a” was used, as opposed to “the,” to avoid any idea that other books could not also be keys to the door of Charismatic Renewal. By Charismatic Renewal is understood not only the reappearance of charismatic gifts, but the total unfolding of the action of the Holy Spirit in our time, most of which is still hidden. Particularly important is an explanation of the phrase “in the Catholic Church.” In no way do I wish to hurt the sensitivities of those who are not Catholic. The phrase “in the Catholic Church” is used for the following reasons: 1. It is the tradition with which I am most acquainted. 2. My purpose is that innumerable Catholics, who have not as yet heard of or understood Charismatic Renewal, would be able to see this movement in the light of the Catholic tradition. 3. I am unable, due to the lack of experience or of theological background, to explain Charismatic Renewal in any other tradition. I, therefore, beg the pardon of those who are not of the Catholic tradition, when using phrases such as “the Catholic Church has always thought” or “the Catholic tradition is.” I do not, by this, intend to slight other ecclesiastical denominations, but hope that those of other traditions benefit by the work. ON THE WRITING For almost three years now A Key to Charismatic Renewal in the Catholic Church has been a large part of my life. Originally, this work was conceived as a small pamphlet – the hundred questions most frequently asked about Pentecostalism. As the writing began, the work grew and only then did the scope of this burden become clear. Hopefully, although touching on many aspects of this renewal, the writing has remained simple. There are no claims to great insights and no pretense to being the last word on Charismatic Renewal. Throughout the writing I have tried to keep in mind the many who have never even participated in a 4 charismatic prayer meeting and are yet to know what this movement is all about; and the many who pray regularly with a group and need a clear and simple explanation of what the Lord is doing among them. Much criticism can surround this work – claiming it is too superficial, the scope too large and the advice too pretentious. This book, however, has not been written to be acclaimed, but to be a help to many people reaching out desperately for a deeper life in the Spirit. 5 CHAPTER ONE UNDERSTANDING THE CHARISMATIC RENEWAL MOVEMENT It is what Joel the prophet spoke of: “It shall come to pass in the last days says god, that I will pour out a portion of my spirit on all mankind.” (Acts 2:16-17) INTRODUCTION Charismatic Renewal, or Catholic Pentecostalism, has become a household word in the Church. Its continued growth means that all will soon become aware of the phrase, if not the reality. Many renewals have preceded this charismatic one – liturgical, scriptural, and patristic, among others. All of these have been a return to the sources, a stripping away of cultural additions and a return to the beginning. Charismatic Renewal, however, is something very special, for the return is to the first Pentecost, the very beginning of the church itself, in search of a new Pentecost in out day. Events in the charismatic Renewal have moved extremely quickly from the early days of 1967 to the tremendous gathering in June 1974 at Notre Dame. This chapter proposes to be an overview, a stepping back, an historical look at what has taken place and a prognosis of what will happen. The following insights will be provided: 1) An understanding of those elements termed “Pentecostal.” 2) The place of this movement in the Catholic Church. 3) A grasp of how the word “movement” is used. In a true sense the Lord has surprised us all. When everything seemed bleak, with the large numbers of priests and sisters leaving because of problems in the church, with widespread disassociation from the Church among the young and with a struggle to renew the Church taking place, the Lord began to pour forth His Spirit in outstanding ways. Suddenly, a new surge of power was felt in Christ’s Mystical Body. Large numbers began to experience prayer, use spiritual gifts, and come together regularly to praise God. The powers of the early Church, long covered over, were released suddenly for large numbers. Hopefully this work will help many to realize what God’s Spirit is doing and how all can share in this rich outpouring, promised many years ago by Peter on Pentecost Day. This particular chapter has three sections, examining the three terms, “Pentecostalism,” “Catholic,” and “movement.” UNDERSTANDING PENTECOSTALISM A) Definition and History 1. WHAT IS MEANT BY PENTECOSTALISM? 6 The term refers to certain elements of the Christian life, usually associated with the feast of Pentecost and Christ’s gifts of the Spirit. These elements would include: a) A prayer experience whereby the Holy Spirit becomes not just an object of faith but also of experience. This is associated with consolations in prayer, a sense of God’s presence, or what traditional teaching would call “fervor.” This prayer experience is called the “Baptism of the Spirit” and is intimately connected to a personal commitment to Jesus as Lord.

The assembly of 1724 states what other Vincentian documents often said: Parishes should not ordinarily be accepted, but they may be accepted on the rare occasions when the superior general .. , [and] his consul­ tors judge it expedient in the Lord.2 229 Beginnings to 1830 The founding document of the Community's mission in the United States signed by Bishop Louis Dubourg, Fathers Domenico Sicardi and Felix De Andreis, spells out their attitude toward parishes in the new world, an attitude differing in some respects from that of the 1724 assembly.

I know that there is an interval of several hours, but I never imagined I would ever be billed as a warm up act for His Excellency Archbishop Di Noia, of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, your guest speaker tomorrow. I would like to express my thanks to Mgr Newton, who has heard me speak about some of my ideas in private, and kindly offered me a platform this evening. Ronald Crane has been very encouraging and extremely patient in the run-up to this evening’s event, and I am grateful to Fr Christopher Pearson for his welcome to this church and community. Let me begin by going back 21 years. On November 10th, 1994, Pope Saint John Paul II promulgated an Apostolic Letter, Tertio Millennio adveniente, addressed to "the Bishops, the clergy and lay faithful on preparation for the Jubilee of the Year 2000". The document contains a brief introduction and five chapters. The introduction presents the main subject of the letter: the Jubilee was to be a celebration of the redeeming Incarnation of the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Already earlier that year the first ever Bishop of Rome from Poland had, in his book Crossing the Threshold of Hope, given us a sense of how significant the Jubilee Year would be for a world sadly lacking in hope.

A Catholic Voice in the Debate Przemysław Sawa Faculty of Theology, University of Silesia, 40-007 Katowice, Poland; [email protected] Abstract: Pentecostalisation is one of several contentious issues in the Catholic Church. While charismatic experience is welcome and refreshing, it is also connected with various spiritual and pastoral abuses, which is very concerning. When set in the context of the new evangelization and the charismatic reality, people become open to a new type of ecumenism, namely an ecumenism relying on forms of living the faith, on permeating pious practices, singing, and literature. Some people may ask if this features an exchange of gifts or rather indicates the rise of a new hybrid form of Christianity. An analysis of how Pentecostal spirituality has developed, particularly in the Catholic communities, does not lead to a conclusion that the new shape of spirituality poses a danger. Obviously, the theological and pastoral mistakes that do occur need to be corrected but a growth of the charismatic sphere that is integrated within a correct interpretation of faith and with the Tradition leads to a renewal of the Church and greater evangelization. The good outcomes of the catholic, i.e., universal, Charismatic Renewal cannot go unnoticed. In the increasingly secular world, it is only a return to the fundamental experience of apostolic evangelization and a testimony to a living faith of the baptized that may inspire non-believers to start looking for Jesus Christ. The Church cannot, therefore, be reduced to the hierarchical, sacramental, doctrinal, and moral reality only. It is necessary that the involvement of lay people increases and that they use charismatic gifts in a responsible and confident manner.
