Abraham Lincoln’s Letter to his Son’s Headmaster

He will have to learn, I know, that all men are not just, all men are not true, but teach him also that for every scoundrel there is a hero; that for every selfish politician, there is a dedicated leader... Teach him that for every enemy there is a friend. It will take time, I know, but teach him, if you can, that a dollar earned is of far more value than five found...Teach him to learn to lose...and also to enjoy winning. Steer him away from envy, if you can, teach him the secret of quiet laughter. Let him learn early that the bullies are the easiest to lick...Teach him, if you can, the wonder of a book...but also give him quiet time to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on a green hillside. In school, teach him it is far more honorable to fail than to cheat...Teach him to have faith in his own ideas, even if everyone tells him they are wrong...Teach him to be gentle with gentle people, and tough with the tough. Try to give my son the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone is getting on the bandwagon...Teach him to listen to all men...but teach him also to filter all he hears on a screen of truth, and take only the good that comes through. Teach him, if you can, how to laugh when he is sad...Teach him there is no shame in tears. Teach him to scoff at cynics and to beware of too much sweetness...Teach him to sell his brawn and brain to the highest bidders, but never to put a price tag on his heart and soul. Teach him to close his ears to a howling mob...and to stand and fight if he thinks he is right. Treat him gently, but do not coddle him, because only the test of fire makes fine steel. Let him have the courage to be impatient...let him have the patience to be brave. Teach him always to have sublime faith in himself, because then he will always have sublime faith in mankind. This is a big order, but see what you can do...He is such a fine little fellow, my son! - Abraham Lincoln

Puzzle Corner Answers

1. In the time Vijay runs 150 meters Vidya runs 128 metres. Now Vijay runs 176 metres. In

that time Vidya will run (176/150)* 128 = 150.19 metres. So Vidya will win by a whisker.

2. 15 ps since each letter is priced at 3 ps\

3. FRUIT

4. BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER.

5. 40. Logically the largest deviation cannot be for the highest and the lowest. So if you

start with 34 + 6, it satisfies the others as well.

6. SEED, FEED, FLED, FLEE, FREE, TREE

7. 160 mph. ( and not 162 mph). assume distance as x miles between the two airports. The

total time taken is x/180 + x/144 = 324 x/ 180*144. In this time a distance of 2x is cov-

ered. So speed is 2x divided by 324x/180*144 = 160

8. 6 – two for each vowel.

9. 2 each. Assume x to be the number of passes per male and y as the number of males in

the village. Formulate the equations and solve to get x = 2.

10. 90 students and Rs 106 each. (tip: find the factors for 9540 and arrive at the answer)

Electronics' In My Life

I was alone and all dark beneath me and above my life was empty but now you are here with me my life was full of volt and amps my heart is overjoyed you turn the square of my heart into a sinusoid

you load things from my memory onto my system's bus my life was once assembly code, now it's C++

I love the way you solder things my circuits you can fix the voltage across your diode is much more than just point six….

with your amps and resistors you have built my integrator I can not survive without you you are my function generator

you have charged my life, increased my gain and now I’ll end my herewith,

My hearty dedication to "Electronics and Communication Engineering" field. Control, Alt and Delete. By Aparna 3rd Year ECE

Electronics in Music

The music goes BOOM BOOM BOOM with a singer with a tiny device in his hand called the microphone and can be heard in an extremely perfect quality over a large area with speakers amplifying it.

Sound Reinforcement System (SRS) is the idea is used to make live or pre- recorded sounds louder and audible to larger audiences. It is the combination of microphones, signal processor, amplifiers and loudspeakers. Input transducers (Microphones) convert sound transducers (Loudspeakers) convert the signal back into sound energy.

A Multicore cable routes the signal of all the inputs into two mixing consoles Front Of the House (FOH) mix and Monitor mix. The next step in the signal path generally depends on the size of the system in place. In smaller system, main outputs are often sent to an additional equalizer, or directly to a power amplifier, with one or more loudspeaker(typically two) then connected to that amplifier. In large-format systems, the signal is typically first routed through an equalizer then to a crossover. A Crossover splits the signal into multiple frequency bands with each band being sent to separate amplifiers and speaker enclosures for low, middle and high-frequency signals. Low-frequency sounds are sent to subwoofers and middle and high-frequency sounds are typically sent to full-range speaker cabinets.

With the proper (or desired) frequency response the system can be calibrated to get perfect output. Another method requires a pair of high-quality head- phones patched into the input signal before any processing. By harnessing vari- ous exotic fields of electronics and merging it with music best possible musical extravaganza could be experienced.

"With the right tinge of Electronics to butter Music, the latter becomes PHENOMENAL."

CHERISHABLE MEMORIES…

On the 6th of August, a year ago

I had to go under pressure to college

Rigorous training, to learn and to know

And today as I look back, down my memory lane

Distant fond and lovely days still come to my eyes

Yes, I wish these tender periods did not fly

Oh! How wonderful are all my staff have been

From the first day, till this very date I have seen

Nurturing me with love and fondling me with care

Great zeal of patience, my dear staff had to spare

Zestful ,enthusiastic true and kind

A whole lot of values they instilled in my mind

Each student to mould has their main aim

Though these days that had slowly passed by

Wow, I’ll treasure each one, with a lingering sigh!

Getting into this frightful world I shall be

Hopeful to stand by all that’s been taught to me

Such wonderful memories of my college days I’ll take

My Inner Voice to Raise Our Voice

It is about my experience which I had on August 16, the day after our Independence Day. After hearing the P.M’s Independence Day speech somehow I came to know about “MY GOV”, a social networking and citizen engagement platform, which was launched by the government of India. Its aim is to reduce the wide gap between the electorate and the executive (Government) after being elected. It allows the users to discuss and contribute to various government projects and plans. The platform is divided into various groups. The group’s objective is to bring positive changes in the relevant areas with people’s participation. The users are provided with two domains ‘DO’ and ‘Discuss’. The ‘Do’ section includes both online and on-ground tasks, one can assign themselves. The ‘Discuss’ section may be used for discussing important issues which affect the nation. After creating my account in this website, I wished to spread information about this new platform to my friends. So I shared a link about this on the omnipresent social network ‘Facebook’ which is the second home for most of the people in our generation. I also shared that link with various groups and chats to which I belong in facebook and was hoping to get some positive responses from my friends. But unfortunately all my efforts went in vain as no one responded to it except 2 people who liked the share,(maybe) just for namesake. When topics like cricket, movies and other entertainment stuffs get huge responses on social media, fruitful ones like the “thinking for nation and society” topic don’t quite get them. Every one of us are spending our time in discussing about movie box offices, their flaws and recent performances of our cricket team for a whole day, but no one is ready to spend even half an hour thinking about their motherland. For an example, in that website one of the topics is ‘clean India’ which deals about the cleanliness of our country. Most of us commonly say “look at the other foreign countries and our nation, see how neat and clean they are and how unclean we are”. No one will spit or throw garbage inside our home but when we are out in the streets or public places, polluting our ‘homeland’ without any guiltiness becomes the natural habit.

Voice of Saranathan 2014 86 SARANATHAN COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

Students’ Corner

It is because only our homes are taught to be kept clean, not our nation. To some extent it even teaches, “To keep yourself clean you can pollute anyone and anything, there is nothing wrong in it”. Students in our country do not want to fail or get low marks in exams mostly because of the pressure given by external factors like friends who would be the first in our comparison, parents who may worry about getting low marks more than us, and society which will tare you apart when you fail. But unfortunately none of these factors ever create any pressure when it comes to general issue. It is the place where our Individualism diminishes our patriotism. For these many days we have been accusing our government’s inability to develop our nation. But somehow now we have got a chance to contribute to the changes, which we desire. So please take active participation in this site and do it as your mandatory duty for the nation. The success of this article lies in how it spreads across people and creates a positive impact in their mind. By creating an impact it shouldn’t get stagnated in the form of ideas. It should be transformed as positive actions and practices being performed by every one of us. Now we are living peacefully in our country without facing any life threatening problems. But the importance of our nation will be exposed only if we face awful circumstances which are being faced by countries like Palestine, Syria, Iraq and our neighbor Srilanka, but hopefully do not. So our patriotism shouldn’t be contented only with changing display picture and singing national anthem on 15th of august. We should go far beyond these simple things and try to serve our birthplace in any way which we are capable of…

Long live India…
