Both sites were poorly documented. The archaeological evidence from Horsham Court determined that much of a later extension to the court, probably dating from the late 18th century, remained as partially upstanding walls. This section of the house had been built over the gravel access drive, or courtyard, to the earlier 17th century building to the rear of the site. This area was not evaluated as it was covered by mature trees, but upstanding walls were in evidence. At Horsham Old Court, trial trenches confirmed a past

Trenches 1 and 3 were located to investigate surviving medieval remains associated with the laying out of the planned town in the 14th century. Trench 1 was located to examine deposits close to the brook along the western boundary of the site, to identify possible early industry associated with the water course. Trench 2 was located within the tannery complex to assess its survival. Trench 3 was located to assess occupation and land use behind the frontage of the main road. The evaluation revealed that the footings of buildings and pits associated with the tannery complex were well preserved. Comparison of the cartographic and archaeological evidence for the site revealed that the space between the two separate lines of tanning pits may have related to a boundary illustrated on the First Edition Ordinance Survey Map. A total of eight trial trenches were excavated following the completion of a desk- based assessment, an earlier stage of trial-trenching, and an area excavation. The excavation, located to the south-west of Camphill Lane, examined evidence for pottery production, and the dumping of quantities of waste pottery into the adjoining town ditch. The 'floruit' of this industry was in the 17th century, although some evidence of possible earlier pottery manufacture was also found. The Stage 2 trial-trenching was intended to assess the evidence for surviving below-ground deposits related to medieval settlement and industry, and post-medieval industry. A roughly north-south aligned length of the possible town ditch was located to the west of Camphill Lane. The same feature was further examined by the excavation to the south, where the ditch had been enlarged, and used in connection with pottery production. Evidence of undated plot boundary ditches was recorded adjoining the Russell Street frontage within the Market Hall car park. A single plot boundary of possible 16th-17th century date was recorded to the south of the Camp Street frontage. Much of the remainder of the Market Hall car park had been disturbed by 19th century development. However, it was likely that any surviving early post-medieval features would be unaffected by the new supermarket car park, which would only involve limited reduction in ground level within the area of the Market Hall car park. Three trenches were excavated to locate and identify any archaeological remains that could be affected by a proposed development. The evaluation provided evidence of undated archaeological features in the south-east part of the site. These were in the form of a pit and a gully cut into the natural clay. It was possible that these features could have dated to the medieval or post-medieval period. The presence of deep layers of topsoil and subsoil, sealing the archaeological features, suggested that the site had been used for agriculture prior to the construction of works buildings in the 20th century. A ditch was recorded, containing a fragment of late medieval pottery. Other undated features were identified and may have been of a similar date. The site of the Jacobean hall was not identified, although brick and pottery likely to be associated with this phase was recovered. Despite the area having been subjected to extensive mining, archaeological structures, deposits and artefacts associated with the last phase of the hall were identified in all three trenches excavated. This phase of the hall was probably constructed around 1800 at the height of the agricultural revolution and the hall and its associated buildings were indicative of the trend of model farms of this period. The extend of survival of below ground archaeological remains was impressive and demonstrated that further work in the area would be likely to locate the Jacobean phase of the hall and enhance the archaeological record of the later phase. An earthwork survey of the area was also undertaken to record surviving earthworks. At Weights Lane, two linear depressions were also identified and had also been infilled fairly recently with the former line of topsoil still preserved. There were thought to represent former holloways within the settlement or possibly a mill leat marked on a tithe map of 1840. A small pit and linear feature were also recorded to the east of the site. Three small ditches and a pit were identified that most likely related to agricultural activities associated with Grange Farm. A droveway, still visible as an earthwork running north to south across the site, contained significant quantities of limestone rubble and cobbles that were interpreted as a trackway associated with the farm. Archaeological Investigations Project 2006 Evaluations West Midlands

Work undertaken by: Mercian Archaeology The field evaluation encountered two features that whilst could not be date definitively to the medieval period, were suggested as possibly medieval. A linear feature encountered in Trench 2 was interpreted as a possible burgage plot boundary ditch and would therefore have been first cut in the 12th century. The other feature, a wall foundation can only be postulated as medieval and may have dated from the post-medieval period, it was clearly cut by the excavation for a Victorian well. The building assessment determined that both the frontage buildings and the buildings to the east of the yard including the tower were probably late 18th century in date. [Au(abr)]

The work identified three remnant areas of post-medieval ridge and furrow, along with two undated post holes and a series of later 19th and early 20th century field drains. A single sherd of Roman pottery (Severn Valley ware) was recovered from topsoil during the excavation of trench four. The evaluation confirmed that the site was of low archaeological potential.
