MY CAR
CONSIDER ADOPTING: Many of you were introduced, at the Memorial Day Car Show, to the newest member of my family of orphans. First of all, the Morris Minor is not purple! As a matter of fact, the factory color is LILAC, so let’s not have a color issue here. I was looking for another oddball. I was searching around on the internet for a Sedan Delivery vehicle. I found this little Morris listed by a Classic car dealer in Tucson, Arizona. This dealer deals only in classic cars. They wheel and deal and will even do trades but only if you have a classic to trade as well. I saw this Morris, it was advertised as “Original and runs good.” The dealer stated that the little Morris was taken in on trade against his better judgement but that was the only way that he could close the deal on a very expensive ’57 Chevy resto-mod, He said, and I quote, “It does not fit our inventory or our image. I want it off our lot, so make us an offer we can’t refuse.” I did some research and put a few numbers together and called the dealer and asked him for some better pictures. He sent me about 60 pictures and a video of the little Morris running around the lot, proof that it was running. After a few days of thought I decided that I would throw him a low ball offer to see if he would bite. Thinking that my offer would be a starting price and having a top final price in mind I gave the dealer a call back. Much to my surprise he took the offer without any dickering, haggling, or anything. “SOLD” “So, are would you like this shipped or are you going to pick it up?” he said with a Cheshire cat grin in his voice. I gathered a co-pilot and left Casper on a Friday night and the temperature was a comfortable 79 degrees. On- Star helped us go right through downtown Denver with a 16 foot trailer just as a Rockies game finished and bumper to bumper traffic. We arrived in Arizona 22 hours later at 11:00 AM and we were greeted by a balmy 102 degrees in the shade. Since I had gone to get the Morris the dealer even took off the Arizona sales tax of the asking price. I wonder if he was just glad to see it go. We loaded the little lilac car on the trailer and took off. Not so fast, at the first corner the back doors flew open. We stopped and strapped those back in place and we are off again. You should’ve seen the faces of the guards at the border, they all wanted to know what the heck I was going to do with a purple ice cream truck. Little did they know the fun that was in store for the “Rat Fink Paddy Wagon”, and its’s still not purple! Adoption is great for these orphans as we don’t want them to go without a good home. Rather than give birth to a souped up American car, think about adopting a poor little orphan that will turn heads wherever you take them. Besides, the Nash needed a buddy that understood metric, not all of this SAE stuff from across the pond. So, now the 1959 Morris Minor is now at home with the rest of my oddballs including Tammy. ROAD TRIP
On June 9, 2018 13 members ventured north to visit the historic site of Ft. Phil Kearney, the Fetterman Massacre, and the Wagon Box Fight just south of Story, Wyoming. While it was a little warm member were treated to an antique firearms demonstration and got to see how a mountain howitzer operates, lots on noise and fire. Lunch was had, knowledge obtained, and all returned safely. A great day and many thanks to Mark Milliken for organizing the day’s events.
MEMORIAL DAY CAR SHOW
The Memorial Day Car Show came off without a hitch thanks to the efforts of the of the Car Show Committee. There were many awards for many great cars and if anyone did not attend you missed a great event. Shoot, the rain even held off until mid afternoon. However, you humble editor had to drive home in the hail, but no problem, they used steel in those days. There we many cars and people to see and lots to do so here are just a few highlights from the various events: Dealer Shows

Parade Day – July 10th Our club has been invited to participate in this year’s Parade Day on July 10th. The giant change, and great deal for us, is the club pays only one $30 entry fee that covers all club members who want to drive their ‘show vehicle’ in the parade. This is a significant change from prior years and is made available only to non-profit groups like ourselves. Additionally, the parade organizers offer to convertible driving club members the opportunity to have a dignitary ride in the parade with them. The car owner has the choice of having the dignitary sit up on the deck behind the rear seat or have the dignitary ride sitting in the passenger seat. Members also have the option to not offer rides to dignitaries and can instead have anyone they choose ride as passengers. The deadline for signing up is June 26th. This bit of extra time will allow the parade organizers time to assign dignitaries to vehicles. Our club point of contact is Sue Waddell. By the deadline, let Sue know if: - You would like a dignitary to ride on the deck of your convertible - You would like a dignitary to ride in the passenger seat of your convertible - You would like to drive your ‘show vehicle’ (any type) in the parade with passengers of your choosing
When providing your choice to Sue, provide her with your contact phone number plus your email address. You can reach Sue: - Email ~ [email protected] - Phone ~ 307-577-5772
