13449 NW 42nd Ave, Opa Locka, FL 33054 | 305-428-1111 Welcome to the 27th Annual Festival Miami!

The Frost School of Music has a long-standing tradition of serving as an important educational and cultural focal point for our community, and Festival Miami is one of the premiere manifestations of that commitment. Festival Miami’s 27th Season, like all that have preceded it, presents dynamic and imaginative programming encompassing diverse styles and genres. We bring together brilliant guest artists and composers with the Frost School’s extraordinary faculty and student performing resources for a festival that remains unparalleled by any other music school in the country. Last year, we celebrated music through four distinctly themed weeks. This year we continue to highlight the themes of “,” “Jazz & Beyond,” “Creative American Music,” and “Music of the Americas” with concerts that are interspersed throughout the festival and creating a wonderful smorgasbord of music. Festival Miami provides an opportunity for friends and family to come together and experience the universal human emotions that music of all genres and styles can evoke. Whether you have been a patron of the arts for years, or are attending your first musical concert, Festival Miami has something for you. In short, Festival Miami has it all, including the brilliance of Frost student and faculty artists. We are so pleased to have you join us in this great musical journey.

Shelton G. Berg Dean, Frost School of Music Patricia L. Frost Professor of Music

Each season, as part of its objective to make the arts and culture accessible to everyone, Festival Miami presents selected concerts free of charge. The Frost School of Music provides free admis- sion for many local school music groups, social service organiza- tions and senior citizen centers. In order to bring visiting artists to the widest possible audience, master classes are presented free and open to everyone. During the 2009 season, vibraphonist Gary Burton, jazz vocalist Bradford, harpist and violinist Carlos Reyes, and composer Jorge Calandrelli presented master classes and spoke to audiences as part of their Festival engage- ment. These enrichment opportunities are an integral part of Festival Miami‘s educational outreach. Many public and private elementary and secondary school students throughout Miami-Dade County attend Festival Miami performances with discounted tickets as part of our outreach efforts. One of the participating schools of the 2009 season was Coral Shores Senior High School of Tavernier, which attended the Frost Wind Ensemble. By giving out discounted tickets, students were able to experience the joy of a live music performance. Red Grammer & Kids Festival Miami 2009 In the 2009 season, the Miami Beach Senior Center, the Miami Gardens Senior Center, and a group of low-income seniors at- tended the concerts for reduced rates. Festival Miami also gave discounted tickets to Peer Link, a special needs group, and Girl Scout Troop 276. Other groups are invited to attend Festival Miami concerts as well, or are given a donation of tickets to be used to raise money for their organization. In 2009, these organizations include: the Helping Others through Pro Bono Efforts (HOPE) group, the Young Patronesses of the Opera, Amor en Acción, Marine Science Graduate Student Organization, Girl Scout Council of Tropical Florida, Women’s Emergency Network, Friends of the , Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, Best Gary Burton master class Buddies, and members of the Chilean and Paraguayan consul- Festival Miami 2009 ates. This year, these organizations include: Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Friends of Music, Young Patronesses of the Opera, Citizens Interested in the Arts, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce (Leadership Miami), Project Peru and Coral Gables Congregational Church. Additionally, in order to encourage young adults and senior citizens who are interested in the arts to attend performances, Festival Miami participates in two programs of the Miami-Dade County Cultural Exchange. The youth program, Culture Shock Miami, makes $5 tickets available for arts and culture events to students ages 13 – 22. Seniors can attend cultural events free of charge through the Golden Ticket program. Each year, local high school music directors are invited to bring their students to various concerts and master classes. Community service hours are also available to students inter- ested in volunteering as ushers for Festival concerts. Festival Miami offers discounted tickets to University of Miami students Peer Links attends Festival Miami 2009 for many concerts and permits Frost School of Music students to attend most concerts free of charge. Every year, the combina- tion of a diverse concert lineup and educational opportunities scheduled throughout the season allow us to reach out to com- munity members across the age and economic spectrum.
