2 2008 Religious Education Congress WELCOME General Info

Dear Congress Participant: I am delighted to take this opportunity to welcome you to Congress 2008. This annual event is always a wonderful opportunity for us to gather and renew our commitment to pass on the richness of our Catholic faith, our beliefs, our rituals and our spiritual traditions. The theme chosen, “ Lift your Gaze, See Anew Sunday of Lent where we hear the story of sight,” restored flows from to the the one reading who struggled of the Fourth with blindness. Our theme nudges us to widen our horizons, and to bid farewell to whatever may cloud our vision or dim our spirits. Seeing anew, we open up to the wisdom of “God sight” – to see beyond and to imagine a future filled with possibility. I am grateful that so many of you take time to be renewed and enriched by the excellent workshops, liturgical celebrations, resources and opportunities for community building offered throughout the weekend. Your leadership and participation are key to the ongoing development and well being of our local parish communities of faith. Please be assured of my support and encouragement as you so generously dedicate your time and your energy to this most vital Catechetical Ministry. Asking God’s blessing upon you, your families and your parish communities of faith, and with every best wish, I am Sincerely yours in Christ,

His Eminence Cardinal Archbishop of Los Angeles

www.RECongress.org 3 WELCOME

Dear Friends,

I am delighted to welcome you to our wonderful annual Religious Education Congress, where we find refreshment, renewal and are re-energized to keep on sharing Good ,News.” reminds us of the gift of Lift Your Gaze … See Anew The selected theme for this year’s event, “ sight, of seeing, of gazing with eyes of the heart; we discover the wisdom and beauty hidden in the stuff of life and in the human story with the hopes, the struggles and its blessings.

As you will recall, a Religious Education Endowment Fund has been established in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for the ongoing education and formation of Directors of Religious Education, Adult Educators, Young Adults and Youth Ministers. The fund is currently enabling 10 students to pursue a master’s degree in Religious Education. Your gift offering at the 2007 Congress Saturday night liturgies added $42,000 to this fund. We also thank those who made a special contribution to the endowment with their online registration.

We are heartened by the quality and quantity of excellent workshops, keynotes and multicultural celebrations and entertainment offered throughout the weekend – they are sure to renew our spirits and lift our hearts. In the midst of the activities offered, there are also moments provided for reflective prayer, opportunities to walk the labyrinth and time to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. . I look Again, I am most gratefulLifting for your Your participation, Gaze and Seeing leadership Anew and willingness to keep on forward to greeting you.

Sincerely,

Sr. Edith Prendergast, RSC Archdiocesan Director Office of Religious Education

14 2008 Religious Education Congress IN MEMORIAM JOHN O’DONOHUE January 1, 1956 - January 3, 2008

John O’Donohue, Irish author, poet and a regular speaker at Congress, died suddenly January 3 at age 53 while vacationing in France. From 1999

to 2006, O’Donohue was an annual presenter at Schedule the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress. He was scheduled to present two workshops at Congress this year.

The author of “Anam Cara,” a best-seller published in England in 1997 and later in the United States, O’Donohue also authored “Eternal Echoes,” “Beauty, The Invisible Embrace” and most recently “Benedictus: A Book of Blessings” in addition to two books of poetry.

Reprinted below is a blessing he wrote especially for our 2006 Congress Opening Event.

A BLESSING FOR FREEDOM

As a bird soars high Its give and strain of sea memory, In the free holding of the wind, May your heart know the freedom Clear of certainty of ground, That can draw beauty from limitation. Opening the imagination of wings To trust the grace of emptiness As the embrace of the earth And fulfill new voyagings, Will welcome all we call death, May your life awaken Taking deep into itself To the call of its freedom The tight solitude of a seed, Allowing it all the time it needs As the ocean absolves itself To shed the grip of its former form Of the expectation of land And give way to a deeper generosity Through approaching only That will one day send it forth In the form of waves As a tree into Springtime, That fill and pleat and fall May all that holds you With such gradual elegance Of smallness and loss As to make of the limit Fall from its hungry ledge An utterly creative threshold Into the creative clay of your heart. Whose music echoes out along Copyright 2006, John O’Donohue www.RECongress.org 15 EVENTS Saturday, March 1, 2008

Hna. Edith Prendergast, RSC Directora

We rejoice as a people, a people who gather here from many places, F from many points of view, R who worship and celebrate our God in many different ways, I with different songs, and different movements, D but all united and centered upon this God A who helps us lift our gaze, and to see anew, over and over again! Y We rejoice because God has claimed us and named us and loved us and continues to celebrate us all as a people who stumble in the darkness but continue to keep our gaze fresh and bright.

We rejoice because we are not bound by our blindness; we are not limited by our finite horizons; we are not defined by those principalities and powers that cloud our vision, that diminish our spirit. We are claimed by God because our God – believe it or not – believes in us!

Our God truly is an awesome God who shares the divine spark in each of us; Our God is worthy of our praise because we are graced with possibility, with hope, with the potential to be more than we are, to be the eyes, hands, ears, and heart of God! Our God has given us the Christ, the anointed one, the one who places mud and clay on our eyes and our hearts, so that the blockage may be set free; so that we may lift our gaze and see anew!

We celebrate the gift of Jesus Christ, the gift of new life, of new sight, and new hope. With this flame, our hearts burn with the joy that comes in surrendering our lives to the one who calls each of us by name; the one who moves and stirs within us, and helps us to really see again. This Christ, this light, will be for us this weekend a sign and call for us to lift our gaze beyond the petty, beyond our differences, beyond our selfishness and egos, to see anew, to live anew, to sing anew!

SONG OF THANKSGIVING In Christ Alone Don Koch and Shawn Craig In Christ alone will I glory, though I could pride myself in battles won; For I’ve been blessed beyond measure, and by His strength alone I overcome. F Oh, I could stop and count successes like diamonds in my hand, but those trophies could not equal to the grace by which I stand. R I REFRAIN: In Christ alone I place my trust and find my glory D in the power of the cross. A In ev’ry victory let it be said of me: My strength, my source of hope is Christ alone. Y In Christ alone will I glory, for only by His grace I am redeemed. Only His tender mercy could reach beyond my weakness to my need. Now, I seek no greater honor then just to know Him more, and to count my gains as losses to the glory of my Lord.

CLOSING SONG May This Circle Be Unbroken Arr. by J. V. Marchionda, O.P. Refrain

1. We’ve all suffered pain and sorrow, over folks that we have lost. But by trusting what our Lord won for us, we find strength to bear that cross.

2. There is sadness, oh, such grieving, when the ones we love depart. But we’ll cherish all they mean to us, for they’ll always live in our hearts.

3. There are some folks who die worried, feeling burdened by their sins. But, we’ll know that Jesus saves them all, and that they will rise again.

4. Those who earthly lives have ended join the saints in heav’n above. And, we living, who are joined with them, create one communion of love.

5. Now our loved ones live with angels in that holy heav’nly throng. And, since we are still so bound to them, we can joyfully sing along.

Oh, to Be Kept by Jesus Thurston Frazier Oh, to be kept by Jesus, Kept by the power of God. Kept from the world unspotted, Treading where Jesus trod.

REFRAIN Oh, to be kept by Jesus: Lord, at Thy feet I fall; I would be nothing, nothing, nothing, Thou shalt be all and all.

Oh, to be kept by Jesus, Kept through toil and trials, Kept by His hand in mine.

Kept by His Holy Spirit, To me this is best of all. I’m safe in His holy keeping, He’ll ever hear my call.

Oh, to be kept by Jesus, Kept by the power of God. Kept from the world unspotted, Treading where Jesus trod.

SONG OF THANKSGIVING I Almost Let Go Kurt Carr I almost let go, I felt like I just couldn’t take life anymore. My problems had me bound, depression weighed me down, but God held me close so I wouldn’t let go. God’s mercy kept me so I wouldn’t let go.

I almost gave up, I was right at the edge of a breakthrough but couldn’t see it. The devil really had me, but Jesus came and grabbed me, And He held me close so I wouldn’t let go. God’s mercy kept me so I wouldn’t let go.

So I’m here today because God kept me. I’m alive today only because of His grace. Oh, He kept me. God kept me, He kept me so I wouldn’t let go.

I almost let go, I felt like I just couldn’t take life anymore. My problems had me bound, depression weighed me down, but God held me close so I wouldn’t let go. God’s mercy kept me so I wouldn’t let go.

PRELUDE/PRELUDO And Jesus Said Tony Alonso And Jesus said: Don’t be afraid – I’ve come to turn your fear to hope, I’ve come to take you through the deep to be your friend until the end, and give your troubled heart to sleep. And Jesus said: Don’t be afraid – I know your emptiness and grief, I hear your words of unbelief, but if you will, I’ll heal your soul and give your doubting heart relief. And Jesus said: Don’t be afraid – I am the Way, I am the Light, I am the Truth that holds you tight, and in God’s home you have a room, a place of welcome and delight.

VERSES 1. Lift your gaze and see anew there beauty all around. Stretch the edges of your view. Let the peace of God abound. Open wide your heart to see the wonders of God’s love; unveil the gifts God placed inside of you – lift your gaze and see anew!

2. When the eye catches fire, God will then be seen. A beam of light in the dark of night sparks a ray of hope supreme. The sightless eyes are transformed to see all things anew. The wisdom of God’s sight becomes our view – lift your gaze and see anew!

3. Just a glimpse through God’s eyes, what wonders can there be? The lame can walk, the dumb can talk, the blind man now can see. Just a glance, a second chance to stand in liberty; Ignite the spark for all humanity – lift your gaze and see anew! Arena

BRIDGE/PUENTE A vision of peace in time of war. Hope in despair; Refuge in the midst of a storm: Let us see through the eyes of God.

CODA Voice 1: Lift your gaze and see anew. Alza tu mirada y vuelve a mirar. Voice 2: Just open your eyes and see, see anew. Abre tus ojos y ve; vuelve a mirar. Voice 3: God of seeing, God of sight, help us see anew. Dios de vista, Dios de visión, queremos ver tu luz.

It is our hope that every Director of Religious Education and Director of Youth Ministry will be given the opportunity to receive a master’s degree in Religious Education/Religious Studies. Any additional contribution through mail-in registrations and those who registered online could contribute to this Fund. As of January 25, 603 people responded with contributions totaling $8,850. We sincerely appreciate and acknowledge their contributions. The fund is currently enabling 10 students to pursue a master’s degree in Religious Education, and you will be happy to know that several have already graduated!
