The Napoleon Series All Bound For Lisbon

All Bound For Lisbon: Movements To and From the Peninsula, 1808 to 1814 By Steve Brown

The following information has been extracted from a wide variety of occasionally inconsistent sources. It attempts to track the comings and goings of all the units of the British Army who served in the Peninsula in the period 1808 to 1814; some who stayed the entire distance, others who served several tours of duty, some who went only to suffer high losses and be either sent home to recruit or to be absorbed by their first battalions.

Commanding officers and brigade assignations have been shown. In all instances the assignments were the first postings on arrival, and often changed afterwards. The reader is directed to Oman or Reid to gain a fuller understanding of later postings once ‘in country’.

Strength figures are based upon best guesses of strengths by reference to known strengths at the last muster before or after arrival or departure, for which acknowledgement must be given to Andrew Bamford’s exhaustive series on unit strengths available on this website. The term ’?’ has been used as necessary whenever unknown data remains to be completed. All figures are rank & file only (corporals or below). Another 7-10% should be allowed for officers, staff, serjeants and drummers.
