Cultural Inventory Results

In September of 2010 postcard invitations were sent out to 495 Missouri cultural heritage institutions asking for participation in an online cultural inventory survey (See appendix A for the questionnaire). Non-responsive institutions received follow-up phone calls and/or email messages. In early November, paper questionnaires were mailed to institutions who had not responded after the first round of follow-up. As of January 20, 2011, there were 180 unduplicated valid surveys returned. The results below reflect the information generated from the 180 submissions represented in this sample. (See Appendix B).

Appendix A: Inventory Tool

Thank you for taking time to participate in this statewide survey conducted by the Partnership for Missouri Heritage. This survey is a joint project of the Missouri State Museum, the Missouri State Archives, the Missouri State Library, the State Historical Society of Missouri, the Western Historical Manuscript Collections, the , and the Missouri Association for Museums and Archives.

The goal of this survey is two-fold. First, the survey will paint a picture of existing heritage collections in the state of Missouri. Currently, there is no comprehensive statewide survey for institutions with heritage collections and this project seeks to build a statewide database of Missouri collections. Second, this survey will show how institutions can work together to preserve Missouri heritage. By reviewing the information collected in this survey, preservation workshops will be developed to address the needs of collection institutions.

This survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. It will ask you to describe your institution, the collections your institution holds, the environmental control and protection capabilities of your facilities, disaster plans and institutional resources as well as some basic contact information. Estimates and answers of “Not Sure” are fine. We will keep your individual responses confidential; only the aggregate data will be reported.

Funding for this survey was provided by a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (www.imls.gov). Again, thank you for your commitment to Missouri heritage preservation. If you have any questions about this project, please contact Linda Endersby at [email protected] or representatives from any of the partner organizations listed below.

Sincerely,

The Partnership for Missouri Heritage

Appendix C: Institution Comments

Institution Comments 1855 Harris-Kearney We long for training and financial assistance in preservation methods and House and the Westport tools. We feel we have quite a bit of important historical material and our Historical Society archives are the most neglected part of our work. Nodaway County Historical Society Museum just completed a CAP assessment this year. If you have more questions, please contact Board Airline History Museum President Mike Steiner at 660-562-1288.

The Wheaton Historical Society and Wheaton Depot Museum is located in Albrecht -Kemper a rehabilitated 1907 train Depot in the original location. The building is on Museum of Art the National List of Historical Places. I have recently assumed this position as manager of the Hawken House and was totally unaware of the possible funding we could pursue. I am Andrew County Museum eager to explore possibilities for our many needs in our organization.

Institution Comments Archives, Academy of the Our school was founded in 1818 and our archives has school registers Sacred Heart and written journals from our earliest days. No cost or low cost workshops for small institutions will be extremely Bushwhacker Museum helpful. Campbell Area Genealogical Our society is essentially non-functioning. We have a genealogy area and Historical Society at the local public library, with some materials. Campbell Area Genealogical our organization basically no longer exists and Historical Society We are housed in the Cape Girardeau County Archive Center, and Cape Girardeau County have a cooperative arrangement with them. Otherwise, we are a Genealogy Society volunteer organization. Cape Girardeau County ADDRESS NOT VALID Historical Society We are in the process of entering our collection into past Perfect and want to take photographs of the collection. W We are interested in Cape River Heritage Museum archival boxes and temp control for the collection and could really use help financially. The depot is owned by the City of Independence, but operated by a Chicago & Alton Depot volunteer organization, "The Friends of Chicago & Alton Depot", a (Restored) Missouri not-for-profit corporation. Can you send me a copy of this survey with my completed answers Clayton History Society for our records? Thank you. Please send to: Cheryl Verde 334 N. Meramec Avenue Clayton, MO 63105 Cole Camp Area Historical All of our photographs are preserved on CD ROM. Society We are a very small museum with a history of Concordia and Concordia Museum surrounding towns. All volunteers are members of the Concordia Heritage Society. Our historical building has three floors. The museum area holds DeKalb County Historical artifacts donated by the community and is a depiction of earlier days. Society, Inc. The genealogical collection is made up of books, family files, newspapers, and DeKalb County Public records. It is a shame that there are no grants that are available to help pay Douglas County Museum for employee so more museum can be open more days.

Excelsior Springs Historical We are all volunteer museum. We are constantly working to improve Museum conditions. Without a tax base this is very difficult. Flower Pentecostal Heritage It would probably be best for you to speak with our director, Darrin J. Center Rodgers. Flower Pentecostal Heritage The Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center is located in the national Center offices of the Assemblies of God. We have an extensive collection of letters, diaries, photos, and Friends of the Maclay Home, scrapbooks that belonged to one extended family from mid-1800s to Inc. mid-1900s. There are seventeen rooms of original furnishings, dishes, toys, books, artwork, etc.

The Gasconade County Historical Society operates a Museum at Gasconade County Historical Owenville and an Archives & Records Center in Hermann. Most of Society the questions and answers are most appropriate to the Archives & Records Center. I would just like to mention that the address that I provided for the Historic Hanley House Hanley House is the physical address. The mailing address for the Hanley House is: 50 Gay Avenue, Clayton 63105. Thank you. We might have applied for some of the grants, but did not know about the opportunities. We would need assistance completing the Historic Madison County applications. Our local library does have copies of many of our historic publications and books. JC Penney Library and Museum We do have a rather extensive collection of military records on Jefferson Barracks Historic Park microfilm. Jefferson County Historical THE SURVEY WAS NOT RELEVANT TO WHAT THE SOCIETY DOES. Society Published: History of the Jennings and West Walnut Manor Jennings Historical Society (Fairview)Sch. Districts. Hx of the city to be published 2010-11. Collections open by appt. Kansas City Museum is currently open on a limited basis during Kansas City Museum renovation of its two main buildings. Exhibits have been temporarily suspended. This genealogical library was established under the umbrella of the Lewis County Historical Society and for the last 30,something,years Lewis County Historical Society has been operated by all volunteer help and has operated only with the money received from patron donations. Linn County Historical Society The organization has been disbanded. Linn County Historical Society- We are only 2 years old. As we obtain more money we will be able to Museum do more such as temp and humidity control, ect. Survey answers reflect only the Local History Department which is Local History and Genealogy located within the main library, and houses a permanent collection Dept.
