Kevin Bonsor ^^L The oldest continuously published newspaper in Bullock County Thursday, April 17,1997 News Editor Opinions Our Opinion Stick to the issues alone With the SGA campaign and election looming before us, the students and candidates can insure that the most capable person is elected by focusing on the issues and the issues alone. In years past, candidates for SGA elections have often resorted to mudslinging and other disreputable tactics in order to insure victory. Instead of relying on solid platforms, hard work and old-fashioned, the candidates could lazily resort to tearing each other down in the public eye. By slinging mud, each candidate hopes to destroy the student body's respect for the opponent. Actually, though, each one achieves just the opposite. Hopefully, though, the smart voter will be repulsed by a candidate who must make his opponent look bad in order to seem like the best candidate. Speaking of voters, we as students have also failed in the past to remain focused on the issues alone. Often, students simply vote for the candidate they may know or like. Or worse yet, they may vote simply along racial lines. Thus, the election becomes a mere popularity contest, not an indicator of the best candidate for the job. The chances of electing the most qualified candidate will be increased if the candidates remain determined to CAUTION: DKM& NBOUT CI&&RETTC& (M BE fPDICTNE. present the voters with their platforms and realistic plans for their administrations and if the students vote for the candidate who best represents their interests.
