THE WALRORP ASTORIA NEW YORg Cn ti EfZP1* ER it, 2007

This ninth international humanitarian symposium sponsored by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation brought together leaders from governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), foundations, corporations, multilateral institutions and the media to reflect on the changing face of philanthropy; whether it is the result of evolution or revolution; and where it is taking humanitarian activity. As in previous years, the symposium was broadcast on the Internet. Its complete proceedings are published and distributed to world leaders and are also available on the Hilton Foundation website.

The symposium was held in conjunction with the twelfth annual presentation of the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize. Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, was the keynote speaker at the Prize ceremony honoring 2007 Hilton Prize recipient, Tostan, at a dinner following the day-long symposium. Tostan is a Senegal-based literacy organization whose community empowerment programs are centered on a foundation of human rights and democracy. Tostan, which means "breakthrough" in Wolof, has brought about dramatic changes in thousands of villages, ending domestic violence and exploitation of children, empowering women, and shattering harmful cultural traditions such as female genital cutting and child marriages. Founded in 1991, it has worked in nine countries in Africa and teaches in 16 languages. SPEAKERS

SUMMARY PROCEEDINGS OF "THE CHANGING FACE OF PHILANTHROPY : EVOLUTION OR REVOLUTION?" PAGE 1 SYMPOSIUM SYNOPSIS

We are witnessing an unprecedented amount of attention placed on the problems that we as humanitarians confront. And what is heartening, it is not just an academic focus, but a human response. People want to be engaged. New ideas, new players, and new partnerships are coining together. People in business, in the media, in entertainment, and individuals in the generalpublic arepaying attention, making demands on world leaders and international institutions and, more importantly, putting demands on themselves to participate. These are new and desperately needed resources. This new energy and commitment, and the new relationships it will help forge, comes at a time when a breakthrough is needed" -StCven M Hilton President and CEO, Conrad N. Hilton-Pounddi n

PAGE 2 SUMMARY PROCEEDINGS OF "THE CHANGING FACE OF PHILANTHROPY: EVOLUTION OR REVOLUTION?" 0 Donors need to engage strategic philanthropy. Donors have a chance to really make a difference, but only those who are willing to give up the "quick fix" or the visible and touted "branding" of their efforts and take a risk. This is the time for strategic philanthropy-long term investments, from-the-planning-phase-up partnerships with implementers and fellow donors, long term funding cycles that do not require constant reporting and do not rule out the overhead costs that permit research, training and staff development and experimentation.

Trust, transparency and accountability are prerequisites. It would be foolhardy to consider long- term grants, eased reporting restrictions, joint efforts and pooled resources without demanding and verifying transparency and accountability on the part of all players-implementer grantees, NGOs, foundations, The 2007 Conrad N. Tim Hanstad, term fixes to the risky business of strategic investments, President and CEO, Rural Development Institute CONCLUSION This symposium had a different sound than previous ones. It had a language of its own: network natives, life online, venture philanthropists, social entrepreneurs, branding, scaling up and sustainability, strategic philanthropy-to say nothing of blogs, Facebook, orgs and coms. It is not that the words or concepts were entirely new or unknown. It was the combined impact of their presence. Change is here. It is not going away. Like it or not, the face of philanthropy is changing.

For the most part, the speakers found reassurance and even comfort in these new developments. People are engaged. The humanitarian impulse is thriving in the new millennium. It is up to those who are in the field to find ways to accommodate the new players, to make them welcome, to adopt and adapt their methods, and to insist on adherence to the same underlying principles that have always driven humanitarian work at its best: all concerned want to relieve human suffering and make the world a better place. It is that simple. The hard part; the greatest challenge, is absorbing the growing realization that if humanitarians really are to alleviate global suffering, scaling up is essential to achieve generational and sustainable results. Fortunately, the day's speakers laid out several paths to follow to reach that goal. FOR MORE INFORMATION
