TREMATON CASTLE

In the civil parish of Saltash. In the historic county of Cornwall (Modem Authority of Cornwall, 1974 county of Cornwall).

Castle mentioned in Domesday and passed to the Dutchy of Cornwall in 1337. It became neglected in the mid C14 and was in ruins by C16. There are the remains of C12 shell keep and the gatehouse, rebuilt in C13, is substantially intact. A deer park is named in 1282 but had lost the deer by 1500. Higher Lodge, a two storey crenellated house (ll*listed), was built within the castle bailey in 1807-8 and part of the curtain wall was demolished to provide views of the estuary.

Located in Tornes, Devon, the fonner beauty of a castle called Berry romeroy now stands in ruins. From I 066 to 1550, this castle once served as the home of the De La romerai family. You may wonder why such a family name may ring bells throughout the area. but it is some of the family members from the past who still hold a place in the minds and thoughts of residents.

When sifting through early records regarding the Berry romeroy Castle, you will find that the Pomeroy family earned wooden fortification for their roles played within the Nonnan Invasion. Throughout the years. many changes took place in regards to the castle and in about 1600, the buildings on the premises were enlarged.

By the end of the 17th century, the family that occupied Pomeroy Castle at the time (the Scymours), abandoned the residence. It didn ~t take long for the castle to slowly decline. Ry 1730, the castle became the ruins you sec today. So. what happened to the castle lo make it such a ruin? The castle has suffered greatly throughout the years to the hands of dcstrnctive clements of weather. The lead, wood, and glass that the castle once possessed was also salvaged. Maybe it is its current appearance that breeds the haunted talcs associated with the castle, hut there plenty of stories attuchcd to this site.

One of the legends connected to the castle involves one of the family members that have become known throughout the years. Her name is Margaret De Lu Pomemi and her ghost is believed encountered by many, who described her wearing robes of white. She offers a rather pitiful talc. Talcs reveal that Margaret might have hud a sister named Eleanor. who was filled with spite and negativity.

Sibling rivalry took center stage between the two sisters when they both fell in love with the same fellow. At the time, Margaret was a rather attraction woman and Eleanor paled in comparison. She was wildly jealous of her sister and could not contain her feelings. One day, she trapped her sister in one of the dungeons located in the castle, leaving her without any food or water. Murgarct eventually passed away at the hands of her sister, but her spirit is said to live on. It is her image and figure that witnesses claim to have encountered while on the castle grounds.

The Berry Pomeroy castle also serves as home for many other ghosts. spirits and apparitions that you will be able to explore in upcoming articles. Some arc animals like the Black Hound. while others arc lost souls like the Blue Lady. Each has a story of their own. Be on the lookout!

ue 3: Weird Happenings at Berry Pomeroy, Devon by Mavis Vlgay I Summer 1994 I went with my husband John, our son Paul and his girlfriend Jan to visit Berry Pomeroy near Totnes. For several months we had been interested in the place and had read about the psychic phenomena which are reputed to have been witnessed in and around the castle which is said to be the most haunted one in England. It is intersected by ley lines which may have something to do with it. History The castle dates from the 15th and 16th centuries but the site has probably been occupied since the 11th century when Ralph de la Pomerai received the manor of Beri from William the Conqueror as a reward for his services at the Battle of Hastings. The Pomeroys, as their name became, held the manor until 1548, then it was sold to Edward Seymour, the brother of Jane Seymour who was the third wife of King Henry VIII. He became the first Duke of Somerset and was Lord Protector during the brief reign of the boy king Edward VI. He planned and began to build a new wing of state rooms at the castle. After his execution in 1552 the castle passed to his son Lord Edward Seymour who with his son, spent large sums of money continuing the building which was never finished. The castle was abandoned by the family and by 1730 had become a ruin. The castle still belongs to a Seymour - the 19th Duke of Somerset. Many strange tales have grown up around the castle, of apparitions, freezing air, shadows of unseen objects, feelings of fear, lights and unexplained sounds, so it was with great curiosity that we drove into the leafy grounds of the castle and parked the car. We went for a pleasant woodland walk with our two dogs where a steep slope lay below one side of our path. On our return we left the dogs in the car then Paul, Jan and I walked towards the castle whilst my husband John took some photographs and kept his eye on the dogs.

~ Ghostly apparitions A Gatehouse with two towers, a curtain wall with a small round tower at the end and the remains of a large three storied medieval mansion rose in front of us. We entered the Courtyard through the Gatehouse then walked along the Rampart to the small tower called Margaret's Tower which fascinated us as it is haunted by the ghost of Lady Margaret Pomeroy. She had been imprisoned there by her jealous sister Lady Eleanor as both sisters had loved the same man. Inside the tower we went down a steep spiral staircase to a dark damp chamber, a dungeon in which small slit-like gun loops let in some light. The ground was wet and it seemed a very eery place. On a dark night it would be positively macabre. The White Lady The ghost of Lady Margaret, known as the White Lady because she is dressed all in white, has been seen to leave the tower and walk along the Rampart Walk. Among the many reports of her appearance is one of a terrifying experience which a man had one night in 1987. For months he had spent nights visiting the castle in the hope of seeing something then one night he entered the castle, walked along the Rampart to Margaret's Tower where he descended the spiral staircase to the dungeon. It was completely dark then a brilliant light appeared, illuminating the chamber and the White Lady appeared in front of him. He was so frightened that he ran up the stairs and out of the castle as fast as he could, and nothing will make him visit the castle again. In other parts of the castle we saw fireplaces stranded where other floors had once been, and we peered into one fireplace at ground level where we saw the sky a great distance away. Many jackdaws were flying around the ruined walls and uttering their harsh "chak chak". The walls were draped with the plants of Ivy-leaved toadflax, Herb Robert and small ferns which had found a scanty lodging in crevices in the ancient stone. Whilst standing in the former kitchen and looking up past the towering walls to the sky we noticed that the clouds were moving very fast overhead. Both Jan and I had a strange feeling that time was passing unnaturally quickly outside but in the castle we were caught in a time warp. It was almost as though we were disconnected with the outside world. http://www.cropcircleresearch.com/articles/e003-pomeroy .html 7/3/2007 Crop Circle Research: Enigma Issue 3: Weird Happenings at Berry Pomeroy, Devon Page 2 of 4

The Blue Lad A ghost with an evil reputation is that of the Blue Lady whose appearance is a portent of death, not necessarily of the person who sees her. She is supposed to be the daughter of one of the barons of Berry Pomeroy and had given birth to a child sired by her own father and whom she strangled.

Temgting Death She has been known to beckon a man from the summit of a lofty wall and when he tried to reach her thinking that she would fall, the masonry gave way and he almost fell headlong to a great depth. Luckily, he managed to cling to a ledge and was eventually rescued. When he mentioned the lovely woman he had tried to save he was told that she was not a real person but a phantom.

Pure l;yil The presence of another evil ghost was felt by a group of people who were ghost watching at the castle one night in 1983 and as a result they were all in a state of terror. Later when one of them used an ouija board in his home the ghost came through and answered some questions. She said that her name was Isabella and that she was nine years old. She then appeared with an evil grin on her face and caused much panic, going from one person to another to taunt them and to frighten them.

Making Contact They contacted her for nine months through the ouija board and found out who she was and how she had lived. She had been born a Pomeroy but was illegitimate and had spent all her time within the castle walls. She had been well cared for and had the best of food and clothes. One evening she entered the kitchen and saw her mother, _,,______, who was a maid, about to be raped surrounded by drunken men who had gone there to gorge on food and wine after a successful day's hunt. She tried to drag her away but one of the men hit the girl and she fell head first on the stone floor dying instant ly. At first she did not know that she was dead. She tried again to save her mother but when she tried to pull her mother's arm her hands kept going through her mother's hands and body. She made many attempts but all in vain. She saw her mother raped repeatedly and slowly she realised that she herself was dead. For over five hundred years she was tortured mentally by the horror of that night and she remained earth-bound and in a negative state. Circumstances had turned an innocent little girl into a ghostly monster. Gradually after the nine months of contact in a family environment she was introduced to a greater more positive spirit from a higher plane and she was reunited with her mother. She is at last free of Berry Pomeroy. Later it was discovered that there were another twenty-six negative spirits in and around the castle.

The sky was blue and the sun was bright making the castle ruins seem peaceful and innocent and I didn't feel at all uneasy. (I even went into the dungeon of Margaret's Tower again on my own). The reports of spine-chilling experiences mean that the castle can invoke other feelings. With this thought we left the castle meaning to return on another day. Two days later we were at Berry Pomeroy castle again. This time I took our dogs Sally and Dusty close to the haunted Margaret's Tower to see their reaction. It has been found that dogs often refuse to go near but our dogs could not get close enough and tried to get through the narrow openings of the gun loops. Either our dogs do not possess the reputed sixth sense or the ghost was away for t he day! Paul wandered around by the walls with his gadget which records electrical energy to see if he could get a reading. The tall trees nearby shook in sudden gusts of wind and I felt very cold although the sun was shining and I had felt quite comfortable until I had arrived at the castle. http://www.cropcircleresearch.com/articles/e003-pomeroy.html 7/3/2007 Crop Circle Research: Enigma Issue 3: Weird Happenings at Berry Pomeroy, Devon Page 3 of 4

We spoke to a man who was photographing the tower and who was curious to know what Paul was doing. The man was a photography teacher from a nearby college and had brought a group of ~ students to practice their skills. One of the boys later told us that he had seen a shadow move out into the sunlight from the deep shade of the Gatehouse, and one of the girl students said that she had felt a tingling in her hand when she touched a fireplace In the castle kitchen.

Personal Experiences This time John entered the castle with Paul whilst Jan and I, with the dogs, sat in the forecourt of the nearby tea house. We met the teacher again and spoke to him. He said that he often visits the castle. In spite of it having an evil and frightening reputation he likes it and it doesn't give him any bad feelings, although his dog has refused to go near Margaret's Tower. He told us that he had known one of the builders who had worked on restoration of the castle for about five years. This man had had many ghostly experiences and had witnessed a manifestation of one kind or another nearly every day. Apparently, the present builders continuing with the restoration have seen nothing. Many of the manifestations take place during the day. Physical Evidence Some people have had films come out blank or their cameras have jammed. Sometimes ghosts have appeared on film even though none were seen at the time. When I.T.V. cameramen came to take shots of the castle at night for a documentary all their cameras jammed. This happened again the following night after the cameras had been checked and were working properly. On the third night the floodlighting would not function so the filming never took place. Car engines have also failed in the vicinity of the castle. I asked the woman in charge of the teahouse if she had experienced anything ghostly, to which she replied that once when she was in the shop alone she had felt a hand placed on her shoulder yet there was no one else there. Another time her husband was opening the shop early In the morning ~ when a shadow passed across the door, but again there was no one there. Jan and I stared at the Gatehouse seeing John and Paul wandering around beyond. The castle is a fascinating ruin and we felt we had to keep gazing at it, our eyes inevitably focussing on the small Margaret's Tower with its dark secrets. Eventually John and Paul re-joined us, Paul saying that his gadget had recorded slightly less than normal electrical energy in Margaret's Tower where the White Lady is said to roam.

Grisly Suicides After having had a snack and drinks at the tea house we took the dogs for a walk along a wooded path which joined a narrow road which led round the castle's eastern and northern sides. From here can be seen a dramatic view of the castle ruins on top of a high wooded precipice. It was here that two Medieval horsemen, who were Pomeroy brothers, were supposed to have leapt with their steeds to their death so as not to surrender to their foe who was besieging the castle. The ghostly sounds of galloping hooves and cries have been heard. The Haunted Mill House Further on we came to the castle mill house beside a stream and I thought of an account I had read of two women out for a drive who apparently went back in time and they saw the mill house and its surroundings as it once had been, with a girl in peasant dress sitting on a wall. Retracing our steps we went back to the car and drove away from Berry Pomeroy. Noticing some fields of young green corn I was reminded that crop circles have appeared there in recent years and are more prolific than in other parts of Devon. The Brutus Stone ~ Besides ghosts and crop circles there is another inexplicable thing in the area - an ancient stone which is connected with a legend. It is named the Brutus Stone and is set into the pavement near the East gate in the main street of Totnes.

Origins of the Legend In his History the 12th century historian, Geoffrey of Monmouth, tells of Brutus who was a great grandson of the Trojan Prince Aeneas. Brutus captured the King of the Greeks and forced him to set the enslaved Trojans free and to provide a fleet of ships for their departure. He embarked on a long voyage, seeking a permanent home for himself and his people. Eventually he arrived at Totnes on the island of Albion (Britain) which was inhabited only by a few non-human giants, such as Gogmagog, etc. After disposing of them Brutus peopled the land with Trojans and re-named it 'Britain' after himself.

Aliens? What can we make of the non-human giants? This is a mystery that cannot be solved. Were they some kind of alien beings as has been suggested of the goblins and elves of folklore ?

Fab ication or Fact? Geoffrey of Monmouth was not a reliable historian. He coloured his facts to embellish a story and it is thought that he invented the legend, or most of it, to give a boost to the ancestry of the Britains. What gave him the idea of the giants? The saying 'There is no smoke without fi re' makes me wonder.

Berry Pomeroy and the surrounding area is one of great interest and beauty, and to the seeker of unexplained phenomena, one certainly worth visiting.

Ghosts at Berry Pomery

Standing on a steep valley side near the Devon coast, Berry Pomeroy Castle is said to be one of the most haunted in Britain

The sun had not yet dispelled the chill of the early morning, and the birds were still chorusing their welcome to a new day from their roosts in the trees around Berry Pomeroy castle. There is a clatter of hooves on stone. A horse snorts, followed by a jingling of harness. A man leads his mount onto the castle battlements. He is quickly followed by a second. A bird flutters from St. Margaret's tower, out over the precipitous west wall and up into the pale blue sky. The horses are restless with a certain nervous tension transmitted from their youthful owners, who - turning to face one another - doff their wide-brimmed hats, revealing the same sad faces and features. Brothers, perhaps even twins. Both with the same grim determination straining their boyish good looks. ~ They wind broad strips of cloth around the horses' eyes, tying them over the animals' necks. Then they embrace each other, cross themselves and commend their souls to God. The birds have finished their morning chorus, and there is a deep and respectful silence. Only the lichen-encr usted walls of the old castle bear witness as the brothers mount their steeds and spur them forwards. They gallop along the battlements at full speed and spring over the western edge, falling through the crisp morning air to their deaths a hundred feet below.

This legendary story is associated with the rambling and ruined castle of Berry Pomeroy, Devon. It stands on a craggy bluff near Totnes and about one mile from the village of the same name. It is said that because of the Pomeroys' part in the religious rebellion of 1549, Edward VI ordered that the castle's fortifications should be reduced. The family refused to obey, and the castle was besieged by royal troops who had been sent to enforce the order. The last of the Pomeroys were two brothers, twins it is said, who defended the castle for many months. Finding at length that they could hold out no longer, rather than submit to the king's men and have their property taken from them, they chose to ride to their deaths off the castle battlements. The castle itself has a history going back a thousand years, having been owned by two families, the Pomeroys and Seymours. The Pomeroys lived here for about 500 years after the family's founder, Ralph de la Pomerai from Caen in France, acquired the property following the Norman Conquest. In 1548 it was sold to the Seymour family, in whose hands it remained until the 1970s, when it passed from the eighteenth Duke of Somerset to the Department of the Environment. Largely destroyed in the Civil War, the castle nowadays presents visitors to Devon with picturesque ruins on an impressive scale. The massive and forbidding gatehouse is the most dominant feature that one sees on arrival. The remains of a Tudor mansion, built by a Seymour in the early 17th-century, stand in the courtyard. Solitary stone stacks in the north wing of the mansion point like accusing fingers up into the sky. http://www.angelfire.com/pa/NewboldRevel/Ghosts.htm 7/3/2007 Ghosts at Berry Pomery Page 2 of2

As well as the legend of the Pomeroy brothers, there are other stories which justify the castle's claim to be one of the most haunted in Britain. One is about two medieval Pomeroy sisters, Eleanor and Margaret, who both loved the same man. Eleanor, being insanely jealous of her beautiful sister, imprisoned Margaret and starved her to death. Margaret's ghost is said to walk the ramparts and anyone who sees her will die shortly after. Another ghost who is supposed to presage death is that of a 13th-century woman, another Pomeroy, who had an incestuous relationship with her father. It is said that because she smothered her child, her troubled spirit can find no rest. In the castle grounds is a wishing tree. It is supposed to have the reputation of granting a visitor's desires provided he walks round it three times backwards. A green mantle of moss and ivy crowns much of the castle remains nowadays. There are sightless windows and doorways leading nowhere. A variety of birds and other small creatures inhabit the crumbling masonry, which provides them with shelter and support. They peacefully settle back down and no doubt breathe a sigh of relief once the last visitors have departed. The castle's romantic image is enhanced by the picturesque dereliction and decay of its ruins. And it is not hard to imagine ghostly apparitions here, nor can one ever forget the Pomeroy brothers leaping out from the battlements on their horses.

EDWARD WILSON CL ARK

E dward Wilson Clark. one of the leading attorneys of Columbia county, practicing at Dayton, was born in :.\for row county, near Heppner, Oregon. on the 15th of November, 1865, his parents being Oscar F. and :.\fary A. (Allen) Clark, the former a native of the state of New York and the latter of Ohio. They were married, however, in O regon, Mr. Clark having crossed the plains as a young man of twenty-one or twenty-two years in 1846. The mother's parents died when ~he was but a little child and she made the long trip •to the west with her brother, Charles A llen, who arrived in Oregon about 1850. She continued to reside with her brother in this section of the country until her marriage. Oscar F . Cla rk took part in the Cayuse Indian war and in 1848 made his \\"ay northward and settled on what is now the city o(Walla Walla in \Valla \,Valla county, \Vash- _ington. The previous year the Whitman massacre occurred. He became familiar wi th every phase of pioneer li fe and bravely met all of its hardships and privations. He was married about 1850 and for some years lived in Corvallis, Oregon. He had been engaged in teaching in the east and was identified with educational work for several years after his removal to O regon. In later years he was elected county superintendent of schools of Benton county, Oregon, and he \\·as also ap pointed the first probate judge of that county. In 1866 he became a member of the board of county commissioners of Umatilla county, Oregon, and he was one of those who were most earnest and effective in securing the establishment · of th~ county seat at Pendleton. Indeed he was recognized as a very prominent and influential citizen of Oregon, where he remained until 1877, when he removed to Columbia county, Washington. Taking up his abode in Dayton, he was soon thereafter elected justice of the peace and served in that office for many years. His decisions were strictly fair and impartial, being based upon the law and the equity in the case, and that he enjoyed the full confidence of the public is indi cated by his long retention on the justice bench. Death called him in 1898 and his widow, surviving for about a decade, passed away in 1908. Edward 'N. Clark was reared under the parental roof and completed his education in the Dayton high school. In 1886 he took up the study of law, read ing under the preceptorship of Judge M .. M. Godman, of Dayton, and in 1888 he was admitted to the bar, after which he opened a law office in Dayton, hL, abili~y placing him, through the intervening years, in the front ranks of the profession. He served for ten years as prosecuting attorney of Columbia county and for five years was city attorney of Dayton. He was also for one year city clerk and at the present writing is a member of the board of education, in which position he has continuously served since 1893. The public school system indeed finds in him a stalwart champion and one ~vhose efforts in its behalf have been characterized by marked progress. On the 28th of Febmary, 1892, Mr. Clark was united in marriage to Miss Nel1ie B. Gritman, of Dayton, a daughter of Delos \V. and Mary (Davis) Gritman. Her father, who was one of the successful agriculturists and prominent citizens of Columbia county, served for a number of years as a member of the board of county commissioners and was widely recognized as a man of sterling character and genuine worth. l\Ir. and Mrs. Clark ha,·e a son, Roscoe L., who was grad uated from \Vhitman College with the class of 19r5 and is no,v a student in the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia. Fraternally Mr. Clark is connected with Dayton Camp, No. 95, vV. 0. 'N.; with Dayton Circle, No. 238, Women of Woodcraft; and with Dayton Lodge, No. 3, K. P. He ranks with the leading and representative residents of Dayton because of his loyalty in citizenship, because of his genuine personal worth and also by reason of his professional ability. He is a man of well balanced intellect, thoroughly familiar with the law, possessed also of comprehcnsi,·c general informa tion and of an analytical mind. He is recognized as a formidable adversary in legal combat but one who at all times holds to the hig·hcst standards of the pro fession, his record reflecting credit upon the history of the bench and bar of Washington. <7~ :5~¥- (5"1-J

-101- Mrs.Mary Clark (Weston Leader, Dec 21, 1906)

An Oregon Pioneer of 1846 is Summoned by Death

At six o'clock Sunday morning, December 16, 1906 Mrs. Maryann Clark aged 74 years, widow of the late O.F. Clark, died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Ezra Vinson of Weston. Mrs. Clark was born in Michgan, August 14, 1833, and crossed the plains from her native state in to King's Valley, Benton County, Oregon, at the age of thirteen. She was the mother of thirteen children, seven ofwhom survive her. She also had eighteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. For many years she lived at Heppner, Oregon, where she was an earnest member of the Baptist Church. In this faith she died. For some time past she had been in feeble health and often spoke of her willingness to go, saying on the last stormy night, "I shall feel better in the morning." Her remains were taken by her sons to Dayton, Washington to be laid by the side of her husband who preceded her to the grave twelve years ago. CLARK (Information received from Earle L. Greig of Corvallis, Oregon)
