From the Editor

Welcome to the Christmas and Ninth Anniversary edition, and thank you to Jenna Wheatman, Hester and Sacha Butterworth for their contribution. I have included two of the usual end of year items, namely the Senior Cross Country totals, and the updated Favourite Athlete List. As regards the cross country, I note that twelve seniors have run all of the East Yorkshire League fixtures. For this season only, the overall East Yorkshire League Championship will be based on best 4 and not best 5 results, so we may have several who notch up a good score. Similarly the team championship will be best 5 and not 6. Alas with the current method of scoring, this will have little effect for our club. Hopefully there will a change for next season. As regards favourite athletes, remains the most popular.

We can look back on another great year for the club. There was an increase in membership and notably more young seniors. The increased participation at by the juniors resulted in promotion. There has also been a big increase in juniors competing in the North Yorkshire Cross Country League, and some top overall placing for our girl’s teams is looking likely this season. We staged another top class Yorkshire Coast 10 K with record fields in both the main event and fun runs. Last weekend, we hosted what was arguably the most demanding of the East Yorkshire Cross Country League series, and received lots of praise from competing clubs, plus the number of competitors remained much higher than earlier years.

A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all at our great club

Mick Thompson 01723 864442 [email protected]

Fixtures Club members have participated in almost all of the races listed. I can help with further information if required. Ed.

Mini Biographies

Hester and Sacha Butterworth

Hester Sacha Hester

Years as a runner: 34 years (on and off) probably more off than on. I was successful at x-country and 1500m at school qualifying for English Schools twice. Also when competing in Pony Club team tetrathlon, running was a strong point and best result was 2nd individual in the Northern Area Pony Club.

Best performances: winning Scarborough 10k in 2010 with a time that equalled my previous PB 8 years before. Winning the EYXC league three times overall female.

Favourite races: Langdale End, Bishop Wilton and Drewton Woods, love all the mud. Sewerby Parkrun on my birthday with all my family running.

Favourite female athlete: Sue Haslam, Don’t know how she does it.

Favourite male athlete: Neil Scruton, I’ll beat him one day.

Targets: To have some continuity in training and take Sacha on at 10k next year.

Ambitions: To keep running and enjoying it and to try and get fitter so I can train with Sacha comfortably.

Funniest moments: An early morning run on the cliffs overtaking a man I had been catching for over a mile and feeling good about bounding past him only to fall flat on my face. I got up very quickly and ran off even faster laughing to myself about how stupid I must have looked and how funny the man must have found it.

Another funny moment was also early one morning running through Raincliffe woods, when all of a sudden without warning I came across a male cyclist squatting. I was too near to find another route so just carried on running to get away from the embarrassing situation (pretending not to have noticed). I kept thinking about it all day HOW EMBARRASSING (for both of us). Can anyone in the club identify themselves?

Sacha

Years as a runner: 15 months properly training, (when I was invited to train with the seniors on a Monday and a Thursday), but ever since I was young, I used to go out for runs with mum and train on a Tuesday, and sometimes a Wednesday with the juniors. I never really used to enjoy running as in primary school cross country, I used to wait for friends and chat all the way. The usual position was near to last. My mum used to ask me if I was actually trying.

Best performances: North Yorkshire Schools Cross Country, coming 4th and qualifying for English schools, for the first time and hopefully not the last, as it was an amazing experience. (My motivation was having a weekend in Blackburn so I needed to come in the top 6 to qualify). Also the York Millennium Bridge 5 K, coming 5th overall and 2nd female with a time of 20.21.

Favorite race: I like Sewerby Parkrun. I think it is a really nice friendly event and the food after is the best! I also like races at Caedmon school, it’s close and I like running a familiar course.

Favourite female athlete: I love watching Jess Ennis-Hill but after the marathon in Athens, Paula Radcliff has done exceedingly well.

Favourite male athlete: Mo Farah is Amazing! I also like .

Targets: To qualify for English Schools 2016, also to do a 10 k next year. I would like to keep beating my brother as he is catching up. To train more in the pool next year, so my times will be better for modern pentathlon and triathlon. Also tetrathlon.

Ambitions: to keep fit and injury free. Also I would like to place highly in modern pentathlon.

Funniest moment:: It wasn’t funny at the time, but getting lost on handicap at Oliver’s mount. I had to call into the golf club to ask how to get back to the football pitch. At first I was only worrying about getting a bad time, but after while I only cared about getting back. Thank you to the nice men in the golf club and the lift in the sport car back to the start!

Pro Am Newsletter Jenna Wheatman. BSc. MSST

This month we have an overview of the 'Sporting Hip and Groin' course Jenna went on over the weekend 22-23rd Nov in Harrogate. I have to admit this course was mind blowing you were bombarded with so much information and it challenged many things you were taught at university. As with technology our profession is always changing the way it looks and deals with injuries.

The hip and groin is a complex region of the body with large forces being generated through this region during most competitive sports.

It is quite normal for you to have a number of different pathologies going on including the muscle, tendon and joint. This newsletter is to explain the design of the hip joint area and the muscles which have the most influence over movement. The Hip Joint When we talk about the hip and groin we are looking at the pelvis and the femur. The hip is a ball and socket joint and allows a large range of motion, particularly rotation which allows us to walk and run in a straight line. The stability lies in the shape of the socket and femur especially the depth of the socket. A structure called the acetabular labrum helps to deepen the socket and varies in thickness between individuals. It is also very sensitive and can be a cause of pain in the hip if damaged. The labrum creates a suction effect on the femur head which enhances stability with the help of some very strong capsular ligaments. Both these structures have the ability to refer pain quite far. What is important about the structure of the hip joint is the size of the socket, it is half of a spehere and the femoral head is two thirds of sphere...... yes the femur does not match the socket as it is the one joint described as not evolving, it is still better designed for bent over ambulation (quadruped). This means the muscles and ligaments have a lot to do to control the hip particularly during the late stance phase as the femur is forced into the front and upper socket and labrum (the majority site of rim and labral lesions).

Any subtle changes in mobility of contractile or non contractile tissues can have dramatic changes on the load distribution resulting in abnormal movement patterns with or without pain.

Everyone’s hips are slightly different which is why exercises should never be one size fits all. We will all squat differently.

If you find sumo squats very hard or even painful it may mean you are anteverted. This means your femur sits in internal rotation but your body is clever and will externally rotate at the tibia so it is not noticeable (if it was you would have knock knees). What you may find is that you can kneel with your bottom between your feet and this will feel comfortable.

If you find you are anterverted then please do not do sumo squats and do not stretch into external rotation meaning pigeon pose or figure 4 stretching, your hip is not designed to do this. Many top athletes are anteverted and it it can allow you to be very fast on a run way like pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva.

The muscles

When assessing the hip and groin we must first clear the hip joint of any pathology. Once this is clear we then need to look at muscles and their effect on the pubic joint. The main muscles we now have to check are the Adductors, Psoas (hip flexor) and the Abdominals. There is a lot of hype about Glute strength especially the hip abductor (gluteus medius) and yes it is important but many neglect the role of the adductors and hip flexors. The adductors have an important role in hip extension (taking the leg backwards from hip flexion into full extension) and while this happens the hip flexors have to work hard as they lengthen to allow this movement and vice versa for hip flexion (bringing the leg forward). The abdominals work hard as they lengthen during toe off and contract to initiate the hip swing forward.

A lot of runners will complain of tightness in the front of the hip and will do lots of lunge stretching but why is this muscle

tight and is stretching the right thing to do? One thing that filled me with confidence on this course was out of all the injuries researched non of the causes were related to inflexibility. Strength is the key. If a muscle is tight why is it tight? what is it protecting or compensating for? and this applies to any muscle. For the hip flexors it may be that they are weak due to fatigue or overload or compensating for weak abdominals during mid foot and push off phases in running.

The adductor muscle group can create a torsion or shearing effect on the pubic joint at its attachment site, it can become inflamed and very sensitive.

Again questions to ask why is the adductor group overworking? weakness or compensation because the glutes are not firing effectively.

When it comes to muscle imbalances a lot can be gong on and that is why it is best to see an injury therapist as we have the tests to be able to work out the problem. It may take a while to sort out and be patient with your therapist. There is no one test that says yes you have this specific diagnosis, not even with scans. Many therapists will have 3 to 4 possible causes of the your injury and it will take time to work through. What about prevention?

There are a few exercises that those involved with sport can be doing to help keep this area strong. These will be good accessory exercises.

Bridge with ball squeeze at 0, 30, 45, 60 and 90 degree knee angles hold each for 6 seconds and work through each angle one after the other.

Adductor side bridge using a chair to lift the bottom leg up towards the chairs as well as lifting the hip off the ground.

Barbell roll outs

Lateral lunge 3 sets of 12 reps

4 minute Plank variation - supine straight leg 30 seconds, side plank 1 minute, supine bent knee 30 seconds and prone plank 1 minute.

Leg lowers, legs hanging off table, single leg lowers from 90 90, 45 degree double leg reach and double leg lowers keeping knees 90.

If you want to know how to do the bottom 3 exercises just ask as it needs to be shown to ensure correct technique.

Notice there are no clams or hip abductions.

The charity’s aim is to support young people, primarily under 21, to break into or continue with their sport.
