The mineralization is structurally controlled by NW-SE, N-S and NE-SW fractures. The common mode of occurrence for these barytes is the vein and cavity deposits type usually associated with galena, sphalerite, copper sulphide, fluorite, quartz, iron oxide as gangue minerals. Principal areas of baryte occurrences in Nigeria include Nassarawa, Plateau, Taraba, Benue, Adamawa, Cross River, Gombe, Ebonyi, and Zamfara. A large part of the vast baryte resources in Nigeria is still underexploited and further exploration work is needed to boost its exploitation. The inferred resource and proven reserve of baryte is put at over 21,000,000 and about 11,000,000 metric tons respectively. The economic evaluation of these barytes is viable having low (SG = < 3.5) to high (SG = 5.3) grades.

  • Ferromagnetic Minerals
Paleomagnetism: Chapter 2 16 FERROMAGNETIC MINERALS This chapter starts with a brief introduction to magnetic properties of solids. The bulk of the chapter con- cerns mineralogy and magnetic properties of iron-titanium oxides and iron sulfides, which are the dominant ferromagnetic minerals. Essential aspects (such as saturation magnetization, Curie temperature, and grain- size effects) are emphasized because these characteristics strongly affect magnetic properties. A firm grasp of the mineralogy of ferromagnetic minerals is required for understanding acquisition of paleomag- netic recordings in rocks and effects of elevated temperatures and chemical changes. MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF SOLIDS Figure 2.1 illustrates the three fundamental types of magnetic properties observed in an experiment in which magnetization, J, acquired in response to application of a magnetic field, H, is monitored. In this section, these different magnetic behaviors are briefly discussed. This development uses the fact that some atoms have atomic magnetic moments because of orbital and spin motions of electrons. Atomic × –21 3 magnetic moments are quantized, and the smallest unit is the Bohr magneton, MB = 9.27 10 G cm (= 9.27 × 10–24 A m2). Transition element solids (principally Fe-bearing) are the common solids with atoms possessing a magnetic moment because of unfilled 3d electron orbitals. Presentation of the atomic phys- ics leading to atomic magnetic moments can be found in Chikazumi (1964). abc J J J Js < 0 > 0 H H H Figure 2.1 (a) Magnetization, J, versus magnetizing field, H, for a diamagnetic substance. The mineral assemblage in the sphalerite veins consists of silicates, sulfides, and carbon- ates. The paragenesis is kaolinite-(quartz?)-pyrite-sphalerite- pyrite-calcite. The morphology of sphalerite vein walls indicates that banding in the coal had achieved nearly its present stage of development at the time of sphalerite deposition. Sphalerite veins postdate cleats and are often developed in cleats. Some sphalerite deposition was contemporaneous with subsidence of coal into sinkholes. Compactional features in the coal show that from 8 to 14 percent of the compaction in the coal occurred after sphalerite deposition commenced. A rela- tionship between porosity, inherent moisture, and compaction of the host coals suggests that the sub-bituminous (B) rank had been achieved at the time of sphalerite deposition.

  • Cupbsbs3 from Varatec Ore Deposit, Baiut
STUDIA UNIVERSITATIS BABEŞ-BOLYAI, GEOLOGIA, XLVIII, 1, 2003, 45-54 COMPOSITIONAL DATA ON BOURNONITE – CuPbSbS3 FROM VĂRATEC ORE DEPOSIT, BĂIUŢ MINE FIELD, EASTERN CARPATHIANS, ROMANIA DAN COSTIN1 ABSTRACT. Mineralogical features and compositional data on bournonite from epithermal vein deposit of Văratec, Băiuţ mine field in the Baia Mare district, Romania are presented. Bournonite is disposed in quartz matrix or it is associated with chalcopyrite and tetrahedrite. SEM images demonstrate the absence of intergrown derivates with distinct compositions. Variations of chemical composition of bournonit have been recorded using electron probe microanalyses. The negative correlation of Sb – As contents indicates a substitution process between the two elements and the presence of limited solid solution towards seligmanite. Keywords: epithermal, bournonite, mineral assemblage, chemical composition, solid solution, Sb-As substitution INTRODUCTION The Baia Mare district is famous for the presence of numerous species of sulphosalts. Different mineral deposits of the district are the type locality for several sulphosalts (Udubaşa et al., 1992): Baia Sprie for andorite (PbAgSb3S6) and semseyite (Pb9Sb8S21), Herja for fizelyite (Pb14Ag5Sb21S48), Dealul Crucii for füllöpite (Pb3Sb8S15). Alongside Pb-Sb sulphosalts, the mineralizations also contains abundant silver sulphosalts, copper sulphosalts and small quantities of Pb-Bi sulphosalts. Among copper sulphosalts, different members of tetrahedrite-tennantite series ((Cu,Ag)10(Fe,Zn,Cu)2(Sb,As)4S13) were reported frequently in all mineral deposits of Baia Mare district. Bournonite (CuPbSbS3) was mentioned in many mineral deposits (Ilba, Săsar, Herja, Baia Sprie, Cavnic, Băiuţ), but in smaller quantities than tetrahedrite-tennantite. Although the bournonit is relatively abundant, it has not been studied in detail.
