Real Madrid are well placed to reach a ninth successive UEFA Champions League quarter-final as they welcome Ajax, who are up against it given both the position of the tie and their recent record at the Santiago Bernabéu. • Goals from Karim Benzema (60) and substitute Marco Asensio (87) either side of Hakim Ziyech's 75th-minute equaliser for the home side gave Real Madrid a 2-1 win at the Johan Crujiff ArenA on 13 February – making it four successive away victories in the UEFA Champions League's knockout rounds, and six in a row outside Spain. • Madrid have won the last three editions of the UEFA Champions League and have won their last nine two-legged knockout ties in the competition, since defeat by Juventus in the 2014/15 semi-finals. • The Spanish club have continued their record of appearing in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 every year since its introduction in 2003/04 – and have not lost a tie at this juncture in nine years. • In contrast, Ajax have reached the round of 16 for the first time since 2005/06 but have never won at this stage of the UEFA Champions League. Furthermore, Ajax have lost their last seven games to Real Madrid, conceding 22 goals while scoring only three. Previous meetings • The teams have met 13 times in UEFA competition – all in the European Cup – Real Madrid winning eight and Ajax four with only one draw, 1-1 in the first encounter in Amsterdam in the 1967/68 European Cup first round first leg. Madrid won the second leg 2-1 in Spain to progress. • Ajax won the next four fixtures between the sides, in the semi-final of their victorious 1972/73 European Cup campaign (2-1 home, 1-0 away) and, as holders, in the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League group stage (1-0 home, 2- 0 away), when they went on to reach another final. In the latter campaign, – now Ajax's director of player affairs – scored the only goal in Amsterdam with (now Ajax's general director) and Danny Blind, father of Daley, playing in both games. • Madrid have dominated recent contests between the sides, beating Ajax home and away in the group stage in 2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13. They have scored nine goals in their last three matches with Ajax at the Santiago Bernabéu, conceding only one. • played in both the sides' 2012/13 games, Lasse Schöne coming on as a first-half substitute in Madrid's 4-1 home win. • Karim Benzema was on target in Madrid's win at Ajax in October 2012 having also found the net in a 4-0 success in Amsterdam in November 2010 and in Madrid's 3-0 home victory against Ajax the following September. Form guide Real Madrid • This is Real Madrid's 23rd UEFA Champions League campaign – and the 23rd in which they have reached the knockout phase. • Madrid are holders and 13-time champions. Semi-finalists or better in each of the last eight seasons, this is their 49th European Cup campaign – more than any other side. • Madrid are looking to reach the quarter-finals for the ninth successive year. Their round of 16 record is W9 L6; they lost at this stage for six years in a row between 2005 and 2010 but have won their last eight ties. • In 2017/18, Madrid beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 at home and 2-1 away, Marcelo scoring in the first leg and Casemiro in the second. • This is the Merengues' first knockout tie against Dutch opponents since a 2-0 aggregate win (1-0 away, 1-0 home) against Vitesse in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup third round. That made Madrid's record in two-legged contests with clubs W6 L3; their last aggregate defeat came on away goals against PSV Eindhoven in the 1987/88 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-final (1-1 home, 0-0 away). • Madrid have won their last five home matches against Dutch visitors since their 1995 defeat by Ajax; the Merengues' overall record at home to Eredivisie clubs is W10 D1 L2. • This season, Madrid finished top of Group G with 12 points despite losing both games against bottom side CSKA Moskva – including a 3-0 reverse at the Bernabéu on matchday six that was the club's heaviest home European defeat. • Madrid have still lost only six of their last 40 European matches, home and away, winning 27. • Defeat against CSKA in their last home match made it two losses in Madrid's last five European Bernabéu fixtures – although they have been beaten in only three of their last 45 UEFA Champions League home matches (W36). They

7 Real Madrid CF - AFC Ajax Tuesday 5 March 2019 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid went down 4-3 to Schalke in their 2014/15 round of 16 second leg and 3-1 against Juventus in last season's quarter- final second leg, but still won both ties on aggregate. • Madrid have lost only one of the 34 UEFA competition ties in which they won the first leg away from home, most recently beating Bayern München in last season's semi-finals (2-1 away, 2-2 home). The exception came against Odense in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup third round when a 3-2 away success preceded a 2-0 home reverse. • Madrid's record in four UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W2 L2: 5-3 v Atlético Madrid, 2015/16 UEFA Champions League final 1-3 v Bayern München, 2011/12 UEFA Champions League semi-final 3-1 v Juventus, 1986/87 European Champion Clubs' Cup second round 5-6 v Crvena zvezda, 1974/75 European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final Ajax • The 2005/06 tie against Internazionale is Ajax's sole previous UEFA Champions League round of 16 contest; the Dutch club drew 2-2 in the home first leg – Klaas-Jan Huntelaar opening the scoring – before a 1-0 defeat in Milan. • Ajax's last UEFA Champions League quarter-final came in 2002/03, when they were beaten 3-2 at AC Milan having drawn the home first leg 0-0. • The Dutch club are without a win in their last seven UEFA Champions League knockout phase fixtures (D2 L5), since a 3-2 victory at Atlético Madrid in the 1996/97 quarter-final second leg that completed a 4-3 aggregate success. • Ajax have lost all three UEFA Champions League away games in the knockout phase since winning at Atlético; they had won the previous three and were unbeaten in five (D2). • Ajax's last experience of Spanish opposition before the first leg came in the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League group stage, when they drew 2-2 at Celta Vigo before a 3-2 home victory. • The Amsterdammers have won only two of their last 15 games against Spanish opponents (D1 L12). The 2-2 draw at Celta ended a run of six successive defeats in Spain, where Ajax have not won since that Atlético tie (D2 L7). • Ajax's record in two-legged knockout ties against Spanish clubs is W7 L2, the most recent a 3-0 aggregate loss (0-1 home, 0-2 away) against Mallorca in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup third round. • Ajax were unbeaten in Europe in 2018/19 – a run of 12 matches (W7 D5) – before their first-leg defeat. They won their first away game at Sturm Graz in the second qualifying round (3-1), drawing the next four – including at Bayern München and Benfica in Group E, both 1-1 – before a 2-0 success at AEK Athens on matchday five. • Ajax are the sole side still involved who came through qualifying. The other 15 participants in the round of 16 all entered the competition at the group stage. • Ajax are one of only two sides to win a tie in the UEFA Champions League proper having lost the home first leg, against Panathinaikos in the 1995/96 semi-finals (0-1 home, 3-0 away). • That is one of only two ties in which Ajax have won on aggregate after losing the home first leg; they have lost the other 12 contests. Those aggregate defeats include two in which the first game in Amsterdam finished 1-2, both against Juventus; in the 1996/97 UEFA Champions League semi-final (1-4 away) and the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League round of 32 (0-0 away). • Ajax's record in six UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W1 L5: 2-4 v Steaua Bucureşti, 2012/13 UEFA Europa League round of 32 2-4 Juventus, 1995/96 UEFA Champions League final 4-3 v Grêmio, 1995 European/South American Cup 2-4 v Bohemians Praha, 1984/85 UEFA Cup second round 0-3 v Juventus, 1977/78 European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-final 3-5 v Levski Sofia, 1975/76 UEFA Cup third round Links and trivia • This is one of only two ties in the round of 16 not featuring a reigning domestic champion, the other being Tottenham-Dortmund. • Klaas-Jan Huntelaar joined Madrid from Ajax in January 2009, scoring eight goals in 20 appearances before leaving six months later. The Dutch striker faced the Merengues four times with Schalke, scoring three goals including two at the Bernabéu in the German side's 4-3 victory in the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League round of 16 – a tie his club lost 5-4 on aggregate. • Nicolás Tagliafico spent 2012/13 on loan in Spain with second division side Real Murcia. • André Onana came through the Barcelona academy but never made a first-team appearance before joining Ajax in

13 Real Madrid CF - AFC Ajax Tuesday 5 March 2019 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid Head coach Santiago Solari Date of birth: 7 October 1976 Nationality: Argentinian Playing career: River Plate, Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid, Internazionale, San Lorenzo, Atlante, Peñarol Coaching career: Real Madrid (youth teams), , Real Madrid • A silky wide midfielder, Solari moved to Europe in January 1999, signing for Atlético after three seasons in River Plate's first team. His stay at the Rojiblancos lasted only 18 months, relegation prompting a switch across the city to Real Madrid in summer 2000. • Five years at the Santiago Bernabéu brought Liga titles in 2001 and 2003 either side of European glory in 2001/02. Solari played 90 minutes in the UEFA Champions League final defeat of Bayer Leverkusen in Glasgow, setting Roberto Carlos away for the cross that led to Zinédine Zidane's memorable volleyed winner; the Argentinian was a late substitute (for Zidane) in Madrid's victories in the UEFA Super Cup and European-South American Cup later that year. • Joined Inter in 2005, winning three successive Serie A titles and the Coppa Italia in his first season, before bringing down the curtain on his playing days in 2011 after spells in Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay. • Won 11 caps for Argentina in a five-year international career, but did not feature in a major tournament. • After a career in the media he returned to Real Madrid in 2013, initially as a youth team coach before being promoted to Castilla manager in 2016 when Zidane took over as head coach. Stepped up to the first team following Julen Lopetegui's departure on 29 October 2018. Erik ten Hag Date of birth: 2 February 1970 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: Twente (three times), De Graafschap, RKC Waalwijk, Utrecht Coaching career: Twente (youth, assistant), PSV Eindhoven (assistant), , Bayern München II, Utrecht, Ajax • Born in Haaksbergen in the east Netherlands close to Enschede, Ten Hag's early days were spent with local club Bon Boys before a move to the youth department of Twente, where he made his professional debut aged 19 in December 1989. • A defensive midfielder and defender, he then spent two seasons with De Graafschap, winning promotion to Eredivisie in his first, before returning to Twente for two years. Ten Hag moved on to single-season stays at both RKC Waalwijk and Utrecht, and then returned to Twente again in 1996, this time for good. • Reached the last 16 of the 1997/98 UEFA Cup, losing to Auxerre, and in 2001 he won his only silverware with the club, Fred Rutten's team beating PSV Eindhoven on penalties in the Dutch Cup final with Ten Hag as captain. • After ending his playing career in 2002 he became head of Twente's youth department, also working as assistant coach for several years, alongside Rutten from 2006/07. Followed the head coach to PSV in 2009, serving as his assistant for three seasons. • Took his first post as head coach at Go Ahead Eagles, winning promotion to the Dutch top flight in his 2012/13 debut season, before moving on to Bayern München's second team, winning the Regionalliga title in 2014 and working with Josep Guardiola. Took over at Utrecht in summer 2015, winning the Rinus Michels award as the Netherlands' coach of the year 12 months later. Succeeded Marcel Keizer at Ajax in December 2017, leading the club to second place in the Eredivisie at the end of that campaign and into the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time in four years.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? Overall records • In 2012/13, Chelsea became the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round to CSKA Moskva. • In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • Real Madrid then made it three wins in a row in 2017/18, becoming the fourth club to win three or more successive titles in European Cup history, and the first to do it twice. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München. Group stage • Barcelona have finished as group winners on 20 occasions, four more than Real Madrid and five more than Bayern München and Manchester United. • Bayern München (2 April 2013 to 27 November 2013) and Real Madrid (23 April 2014 to 18 February 2015) jointly hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with ten. Bayern surpassed the previous mark of nine, set by Barcelona between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003. • Six teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain (1994/95), Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12 and 2014/15). • Twenty-one teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, most recently AEK Athens in 2018/19. • In 2017/18, Paris Saint-Germain set a new group stage record by scoring 25 goals, with Liverpool (23) also eclipsing the old mark of 21 set by Borussia Dortmund in 2016/17. Manchester United (1998/99), Barcelona (2011/12, 2016/17) and Real Madrid (2013/14) all managed 20. • Only Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05), Maccabi Haifa (2009/10) and Dinamo Zagreb (2016/17) have failed to score in a group stage. • BATE Borisov conceded 24 goals in 2014/15, a new group stage record which was matched by Legia Warszawa in 2016/17. The previous mark, 22, was held by Dinamo Zagreb (2011/12) and Nordsjælland (2012/13); Malmö shipped 21 in 2015/16. • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06), Manchester United (2010/11), Monaco (2014/15), Paris Saint-Germain (2015/16) and Barcelona (2017/18) all let in just one. • Matchday six of the 2013/14 marked FCSB's 23rd successive game in the competition without a victory, surpassing the previous record of 22 set by Spartak Moskva between December 2000 and November 2006. • Anderlecht hold the unwanted record for successive defeats in the competition, group stage to final, having lost 12 in a row between December 2003 and November 2005. Dinamo Zagreb are next with 11 consecutive losses on two occasions, from September 2011 to November 2012 and ongoing since September 2015. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is six points: Zenit in 2013/14 and Roma in 2015/16. Since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, eight teams have made it through with seven points: Legia Warszawa (1995/96), Dynamo Kyiv (1999/2000), Liverpool (2001/02), Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus (both 2002/03), Rangers and Werder Bremen (2005/06) and Basel (2014/15). • Napoli failed to qualify from their group with 12 points in 2013/14, the highest total of any team not to reach the next stage when the top two in each section progressed. Dynamo Kyiv (1999/2000), Borussia Dortmund (2002/03 – both second group stage), PSV Eindhoven (2003/04), Olympiacos and Dynamo Kyiv (both 2004/05), Werder Bremen (2006/07), Manchester City (2011/12), Chelsea and Cluj (both 2012/13), Benfica (2013/14) and Porto (2015/16) all

25 Real Madrid CF - AFC Ajax Tuesday 5 March 2019 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid missed out with ten points. Goalscoring records • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat matched by Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at BATE Borisov on 21 October 2014. Eleven more players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid on matchday six in 2015/16. • Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League group stage with 11 goals in 2015/16, eclipsing his own mark of nine in 2013/14, which Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15 and Ronaldo himself equalled in 2017/18. Lionel Messi got ten goals in 2016/17; Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), (2004/05), Filippo Inzaghi, Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03) and (2018/19) managed eight. • Messi's hat-trick against PSV Eindhoven on matchday one of the 2018/19 competition was his eighth in the competition, one more than Ronaldo. Oldest and youngest players • Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens in 2006/07. • Francesco Totti is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 38 years and 59 days, in Roma's 1-1 draw at CSKA Moskva on 25 November 2014. Ryan Giggs (37 years 290 days) was the previous record holder. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for Anderlecht against Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg on 1 October 1997.
