-4- THE PEMBROKE KINGS PEMBROKE OLD SCHOLARS FOOTBALL CLUB IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN 2017 pembrokekings.com.au Friday May 19th 2017 Round 7 - Old Iggies Away PRESIDENTS REPORT

Kings Fans,

Welcome to another weekend of the Kings Speech. This weekend sees all three teams travel to the other end of North Terrace to take on Old Ignatians in what looms as an important game for both Clubs.

Last weekend we didn’t get the results we were after against SHOC. The C-grade were gallant in defeat after being well in the game at half time. The B-grade found it hard to score against as well structured SHOC outfit and unfortunately never got going. The A-grade run out of legs in the last quarter after playing the second half two players down but the signs are good after playing two very good games against the top three teams of the competition in the last three weeks.

After a lot of effort from Luke Evans, we can finally pump up our Kings Lunch on the 2nd of June. Thanks to the Toyota Good for Footy raffle, we have JARRYD ROUGHEAD as our guest speaker. Channel Nines, Tom Rehn will also be on hand to interview Jarryd over lunch where we will hear about his decorated football career. Luke and I are extremely excited and we would love to see as many of you there as possible. Everyone and anyone is welcome to attend the Kings Lunch and so we encourage you to spread the word to your families, friends, colleagues or anyone you think might be interested.

To purchase tickets, please go to the trybooking website which you can find on the flyer below, our facebook page – Pembroke Kings or via your emails. Please do not hesitate to call Luke or myself if you have any queries or difficulties buying your tickets.

All three teams play Old Ignatians this Saturday at Hunter Park,

C-Grade at 10:15am B-Grade at 12:15pm A-grade at 2:15pm

It would be fantastic to see as many of you there to cheer home the Kings as we aim to get some vital away wins.

Enjoy your weekends,

Jack and Luke Co-Presidents.

ROUND 6 VS A GRADE REPORT Goal Kickers T. Evans 3, B. Williams 2, L. Davey 2, R. Illmann, S. Wark, H. Mason, M. Curnow, J. Pengelly

Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Best Players Pembroke Kings 4.3-27 7.4-46 10.7-67 12.9-81 S. Franklin, M. Falzon, C. Canny, L. Davey, B. Williams Sacred Heart OC 4.3-27 7.3-45 10.4-64 14.7-91

There were definitely mixed emotions following our game at home on Saturday against SHOC. While we were all disappointed with the final result, I couldn’t help but be proud of the boys’ effort and willingness to compete from start to finish.

We started the match exactly the way we wanted. The pressure was early outstanding and we were able to put scoreboard pressure on the opposition. Unfortunately, a couple of poor decisions and lapses in concentration allowed SHOC to kick two late goals to level the scores just before the first break.

This became the theme of the day, where we would start the quarter well but were then unable to kick away. Ultimately, we ran out of petrol tickets as a result of playing the second half with just one on the bench, and SHOC edged in front when it mattered.

Pleasingly, we had contributors all over the ground in what I felt was our best performance of the season, despite the loss. Sam Franklin set the standard in terms of pressure and attack on the football. The midfield, led by returning club champion Ben Williams and Luke Davey, worked tirelessly to give us every chance of winning, and Matthew Falzon and Charles Canny did what we have come to expect from them week in, week out.

This week sees us venture to Park 25 to tackle Old Ignatians, a team whose season has almost mirrored ours to date. As always, we would love to see a sea of green to support all three grades on Saturday. See you there!

ROUND 6 VS B GRADE REPORT Goal Kickers K. Sivashankar

Best Players Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 J. Rollins, H. Rusby, N. Worrall, J. Greeny, N. Pembroke Kings 0.1-1 1.2-8 1.2-8 1.2-8 Smith

Sacred Heart OC 6.3-39 12.7-79 18.12-120 24.15-159

Unusual things did eventuate last week at Haslam as predicted in last week’s match report. Unfortunately it was unusual for the wrong reasons & was not a great day for BKings & Neshy’s 100 as a complete SHOC team did as they pleased & made the new scoreboard look pretty ugly. We looked lethargic, disinterested & basic skills for the majority were poor. SHOC on the other hand were clean by hand & foot, focused, structured & came to play.

There were not many positives to take away from this game, but there were some glimpses of what BKings can do when the skills are clean & the intent is there. BKings can play, we just need to be consistent & that starts at training & the quality of training.

Role the dice* rejoined us & was one of a few who tried to take the game on & showed true intent for the full four quarters. Chucky2**, Wazza*** & The Irishman**** all backed up last weeks game in similar style & the Pig at back pocket saw plenty of it & tried all day after getting a late call up.

Old Ignatians are waiting this week to see which BKings team turns up & that will have been set by how we trained this week, hopefully well. The season is getting away from us, so it is time to knuckle down, get some points on the board & earn some respect.

ROUND 6 VS C GRADE REPORT Goal Kickers T. Sneath 3, A. Clark, M. Lane, Z. Polyak, A. McFarlane

Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Best Players Pembroke Kings 0.0-0 0.0-0 0.0-0 7.5-47 J. Budenberg, A. Clark, D. Kirkwood, L. Switala, N. Booth, A. McFarlane Sacred Heart OC 0.0-0 0.0-0 0.0-0 14.6-90

The C Grade Kings were arrived at Haslam for only their second game on home soil for the season. Following the grim result the week before, I gathered the troops, beats blaring in the background, to say that we would be no easy beats this week. The boys ran out, tails wagging and ready to give one of the strongest teams in the league an almighty crack.

Not much separated the teams in the first half of footy – our attack on the ball, skills and energy around the contest could not be faulted. Despite this, Sacred Heart came out of the blocks at the start of the third; a couple favourable decisions their way and a few unfavourable bounces of the footy later and they were able to put themselves up by about 4 goals to 3-quarter-time.

We were unable to regain the lead in the last quarter, however the margin only lengthened by roughly 2 more kicks throughout the quarter. This was a truly encouraging performance from the boys, having matched it all day with one of the best in the league. However, we are by no means content with this result - this week’s job is to play 4 quarters of footy.

See you at the game!

Which AFL team do you follow? The Port Adelaide Pear, and whoever is playing the Crows

On field goal for 2016? Well I’ve played all 50 games in the Glamours, so I wouldn’t mind a crack in the B-grade at some stage this year.

Off field goal for 2016? I’d love to go on a uni exchange to Europe next year, so the goal to is get everything organised so I can head over in January, just in time to miss the second half of pre-season.

Also, I’d love to see the Rambler make a return to the King’s Speech.

Who will win the 2017 AFL Grand Final? I wouldn’t be surprised if the GWS Giants win this one and then the next five after that.

You play your 50th game for the Kings this weekend, congratulations! Do you have a favourite game from the 49 so far? Where has been your least favourite away oval to play at? Two games really stick out for me: - Winning a premiership in the C-grade first year out of school was amazing, even if I rolled my ankle in the first quarter and only played five minutes of footy. One touch, one medal. - Rohan Longbottom kicking a goal after the siren to win the game down at North Haven last year. He rocked up at after half time having played a game of hockey, wore a Guernsey three sizes too small for him and managed more goals for the year than me with his one and only touch for the season. And despite it being a good deck, I never enjoy warming up in the away change rooms at Gaza- they’re about as big as an aeroplane toilet cubicle.

Do you have any pre-game rituals that have stuck with you through your career so far? Who have you played with that has the strangest rituals? I try to get to the games early so I’m the first one to get taped. And I have to do 30 leg swings on each leg before I even think up joining the warm-up, no idea why though.

And Ryan Marini is definitely the most neurotic person I’ve played when it comes to pre-game superstitions. He does these weird stretches and warmups for about four hours before the game.

-13- THE PEMBROKE KINGS PEMBROKE OLD SCHOLARS FOOTBALL CLUB IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN 2017 pembrokekings.com.au Friday May 19th 2017 Round 7 - Old Iggies Away

I am told you are the most dangerous man at the club. What martial arts are you into and what level are you at? Have you ever been in a competitive fight? This is an absolute stitch-up! I did a mix of karate, judo and jujitsu when I was younger, and I was stupid enough to give it up not too long before I would’ve got my black belt. I competed for SA a few times at nationals, but I haven’t been in a competitive fight in a long time.

Is there any truth to the rumour you are related to Jake ‘Steven Segall’ Brennan? Sort of! He’s my dad’s god-son, but he’s about as close to a brother as I have. He was bat-shit crazy as a kid, and he gets more and more nuts as he gets older.

The Lit Grade / Glamours have been lucky to be graced with your sublime skills and evasiveness. Do you have any aspirations of moving up the grades? Who are some of the more exotic players who have donned the green and gold in the c grade with you? Yeah I’d love to play a game or two in the B grade this year, so I might have to start buying Jim Pinkney a few beers at The Hood! My guess is that I would’ve played with over a hundred guys in my C-grade career so far. The funniest ones to play with are always the gappies from England. Poms may be the least exotic people on Earth but far out is it funny to watch guys who’ve played rugby all their life try and play footy.

Who are the best three Kings Players you’ve had the pleasure to play with? I haven’t played with any of them, but Alex Holbrook, Jimmy Allan and Chuck Canny never cease to amaze me.

If you could take one Kings team mate away with you on holiday who would it be and why? Paddy Trutwin and Matt Howe spend that much time together they may as well be one bloke. They’re always great value so I’d love to go on a big trip with the sometime.

What is your specialty meal to cook? I’ve become an expert at making a mean avo on toast for about a quarter of the price they charge at Argo.

If you could appear in any reality TV show which would it be? I reckon I’d be a good chance to win the million dollars on The Amazing Race.

What is your dream holiday destination? The Yosemite National Park looks incredible.

What is your dream job? CEO of the AFL, just so I can read the Brownlow votes out.

What is the coaches favourite saying? Michael Banitsiotis loves telling the boys in the Lit-Grade to “just have fun out there”.

Best AFL/SANFL/VFL player of all time? . I’m still gutted he didn’t win the Brownlow in 2003.

Who is your Doppelganger? No idea, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Which King is most likely to: - Take their top off at training? Oscar Richardson rates his rig big time since he’s gotten into kick boxing. - Snapchat you a photo of their dog? Ryan Marini’s dog has a better social media presence than he does. - Sing at Karaoke? I’ve heard some good review about Frothies Pengelly’s performances at La Sing. - Be late to a game? Nick Chua after taking an $80 Uber down to North Haven. - Take a mid-season vacation? Mark Lane loves a cheeky getaway. -14- THE PEMBROKE KINGS PEMBROKE OLD SCHOLARS FOOTBALL CLUB IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN 2017 pembrokekings.com.au Friday May 19th 2017 Round 7 - Old Iggies Away GETTING TO KNOW A KING 50 Gamer Name: Patrick Trutwin Nicknames: Paddy, Pad-Thai Age: 22 Occupation: Student Guernsey Number: 66

Which AFL team do you follow? The mighty

On field goal for 2016? Be a part of a consistent B-grade side who make a splash in September

Off field goal for 2016? 1. Do whatever I can to make sure Venkha doesn’t win Last Man Standing 2. Meet the Rambler

Who will win the 2017 AFL Grand Final? GWS

You play your 50th game for the Kings this weekend, congratulations! Do you have a favourite game from the 49 so far? Where has been your least favourite away oval to play at? Thanks! Favourite game has to be the winning GF with the glamours in my first season… epic weekend and I’m still able to get stuck into some mates from PAC about it to this day. And in terms of worst oval I’d have to say Modbury, shit deck and I reckon I’m 0 from 3 there too.

Do you have any pre-game rituals that have stuck with you through your career so far? Who have you played with that has the strangest rituals? Nope, I don’t have any but FYI when I play tennis I don’t step on any lines, in line with any lines, or in line with any poles in the fence in between points. The court becomes like a maze and it’s a nightmare! In terms of others with rituals I hear Tucks is a bit superstitious.

I am told you have recently formed an interest in the Spanish language, how well can you speak it? Are you using a language app to hone your skills? Is there any truth to the rumour there is a lovely senorita at the heart of your newfound love of Spanish? Haha you have some good sources! I am learning Spanish with a language app but am very much a beginner. I like keeping my cards close to my chest but there may be some truth to the rumours!

Who spends more time overseas, you or Matt ‘Happy’ Howe? Matt for sure, name a place, he’s probably been there

Your tennis introduced you to club trainer John Gould. What are a couple of things no one at the club would know about Gouldie? 1. He watches ice hockey for about 5 hours a day while Tatum is working hard at the Physio 2. In his prime he had a delicious rig

Who are the best three Kings Players you’ve had the pleasure to play with? Scott Wightman, Deano and Fishy -15- THE PEMBROKE KINGS PEMBROKE OLD SCHOLARS FOOTBALL CLUB IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN 2017 pembrokekings.com.au Friday May 19th 2017 Round 7 - Old Iggies Away

If you could take one Kings team mate away with you on holiday who would it be and why? Stirlo, Howie, Boothy and myself had a couple of questionable nights on Footy Trip in 2014 and I’d love to do it all again

What is your specialty meal to cook? Chicken Curry

If you could appear in any reality TV show which would it be? The Amazing Race

What is your dream holiday destination? I have a few but Canada and Peru are up there on the to-do list

What is your dream job? Fighter Pilot

What is the coaches favourite saying? We played like we trained

Best AFL/SANFL/VFL player of all time? Brian Taylor

Who is your Doppelganger? McLovin from Superbad… apparently

Which King is most likely to: - Take their top off at training? Maz jnr - Snapchat you a photo of their dog? Stirlo - Sing at Karaoke? Tobi - Be late to a game? Razzy - Take a mid-season vacation? Me
