Bears’ Opening Day Items: • Last year, Brown posted a 4-6 overall record, 3-4 in the Ivy League, good for fourth in the league standings. • Brown returns 11 starters (5 off./6 def.) from a year ago. • The Bears have posted .500 or better seasons under head coach Phil Estes in nine of the last 10 seasons. Estes’ squads have finished in the top half of the Ivy League in 16 of his 19 seasons at Brown. • In 19 years prior to Estes becoming the head coach at Brown, the Bears posted a 72-104-4 (.409) overall record. Estes has compiled a 112-77 overall mark (.610) since becoming Brown’s head coach in 1998. • Estes is 13-6 lifetime in season-opening games, including eight wins in his last 11 opening-day games. • Brown and Bryant will be meeting for the fourth time with the Bears holding a 2-1 series advantage. Last year, Brown rallied from a 21-0 first quarter deficit to roll past Bryant, 35-27, in its season opening game. In 2015, Bryant came away with a 20-16 win over the Bears in Providence. • Next week’s Ivy League opener vs. Harvard at Harvard Stadium will be the 117th meeting between the two Ancient Eight universities. • Bryant is coached by former Brown quarterback and Ivy League Player of the Year James Perry ’00. His banner is hanging under the home grandstand at Brown Stadium. • Brown will play just four home games at Brown Stadium in 2017, with its fifth home game being played at Fenway Park against Dartmouth on November 10th at 8:00 pm on the NBC Sports Network. • The Bear Den: Brown students will have a new special area to cheer on the Brown football team at Saturday’s season opening game against Bryant, The Bear Den, located in the end zone at Brown Stadium. The Bear Den, presented by Coca Cola, is located in front of the video scoreboard at the stadium and is only open to Brown students with ID. On Saturday, the first 200 Brown students will receive free tee-shirts, food, and Coca Cola products. In addition, a live DJ will be on the field starting at 11:30 am. The Records: Brown opens its 140th season of intercollegiate football on Saturday against the Bryant Bulldogs, who will be playing their third game. Bryant (1-1), a member of the Northeast Conference, is coming off a 60-12 loss to Maine last week. The Bulldogs opened their season on September 2 with a 49-41 come-from behind victory over Merrimack.

Bears Elect Captains: Senior All-Ivy defensive end Richard Jarvis (Watertown, MA) and junior inside linebacker Isaiah Thompkins (Middletown, CT) have been elected captains of the 2017 Brown football team.

Non-League Opener: Brown opened its season against Yale from 1976-1999, with each Ivy League school opening in league play. In 2000, the league schedule changed and the Bears opened the season against San Diego in Providence, RI. The 2001 game against the Toreros in San Diego, CA was cancelled due to the 9/11 terrorist attack, with the Bears actually opening the season against Harvard the following week. Brown has posted a 12-5 record in non-league openers since 2000.

Duncan Takes The Helm At QB: Junior Nick Duncan (St. Louis, MO) has emerged as the starter at quarterback to open the season. Duncan saw varsity action against Columbia last season and completed 7 of 16 passes for 62 yards, while rushing seven times for 52 yards. He’ll be backed-up by Thomas Linta (Branford, CT), who threw for 1,074 yards and six touchdowns on 110 completions last year.

Jarvis Anchors Defensive Line: Senior DE Richard Jarvis (Watertown, MA) returns to the lineup after earning First Team All-Ivy, All-New England and FCS All-Star honors. He led the Ivy League with 18.5 tackles for a loss and recorded a team-high 7.5 sacks in 2016. The Bears feature a slew of experienced defensive linemen, including junior DT Daryle Banfield (Bronx, NY) (25 tackles), junior DT Grant Varner (Grandview Heights, OH) (29 tackles), sophomore DE Michael Hoecht (Oakwood, OH) (18 tackles), senior DT Tom Kutschke (Lake Forest, IL) (4 tackles), junior DT Zach Genaway (Medford, NY) (14 tackles) and senior DE Keegan O’Hern (Syracuse, NY) (12 tackles).

Offensive Line: One of the major strengths of the offensive unit is its offensive line with the return of four starters, senior OT Christian Montano (Orange, CT), senior OT Clay Eubank (Coto De Caza, CA), junior OG Toby Okwara (Charlotte, NC) and junior OG Logan Winders (Springfield, IL), along with senior C Zach Marti (Miami, FL), senior OG Austin Werkheiser (Rosewell, GA) and senior OT Jared Shimberg (Tampa, FL).

Coughlin Leads The Secondary: Senior FS Connor Coughlin (Medford, NY) returns to the starting lineup after making 53 tackles a year ago, including five for a loss. Senior Terrell Smith (Newtown Square, PA), who had 25 tackles, and junior Sebastian Dovi (Newark, DE), who made 37 tackles, look to hold down the corners.

The Kicking Game: Bears’ head coach Phil Estes will look to senior Ben Rosenblatt (Newton Center, MA) to handle the place kicking duties. A transfer from Trinity, who joined the Brown squad for its last three games of 2016, Rosenblatt was named Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week after games vs. Yale and at Dartmouth. His 52-yard at Dartmouth was the 9th-longest in Ivy League history and 2nd-longest in Brown history. Junior Ryan Kopec (Alpharetta, GA) took over the punting duties at midseason last year and is expected to continue in a starting role.

Where’s Harriott?: Bears’ sophomore Livingstone “LJ” Harriott (Central Islip, NY) is one of the most versatile members of the Bears’ offense and may line up in a number of positions, including quarterback, running back and wide receiver. He rushed for 336 yards and two touchdowns in six games last year, threw two passes and caught three passes. He was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week after a career-best game vs. Yale, rushing for 92 yards on 12 carries and recording his first touchdown on a 52-yard run

Brown Head Coach Phil Estes: Since Phil Estes became head coach of the Bears in 1998, his Brown football teams have captured three Ivy League titles (1999, 2005, 2008), finished second four times, third five times, and overall have finished in the top half of the Ivy League in 16 of his 19 seasons, while compiling an impressive 76-57 Ivy mark (.600), 112-77 (.610) overall. Estes' 76 career Ivy League wins are the most ever at Brown and rank sixth in the Ivy League record book, while his 112 career wins overall rank 10th all-time in the Ivy League. Estes' 189 career games coached at Brown are ninth in Ivy football history. Estes, the 19th head coach in Brown history, is the second winningest coach in Brown football history, guiding the Brown football program to an unprecedented level of success, winning three Ivy League Championships, including Brown’s first ever Ivy outright title in 2005. He has also coached and recruited Brown’s only four Ivy League Players of the Year – Sean Morey ‘99, James Perry ’00, Nick Hartigan ’06 and Buddy Farnham '10. In the 19 years Estes has coached on the East Side, five of his players have gone on to win rings. The select fraternity includes two-time champion James Develin of the (2015, 2017), two- time winner Zak DeOssie of the (2008, 2012), the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Sean Morey (2006) and New England Patriots’ Drew Inzer (2001) and Chas Gessner (2003).

Bears In The NFL: Brown has two of its former players on NFL rosters in 2017. Fullback James Develin ’10, an engineering concentrator and defensive end at Brown, enters his fifth season with the New England Patriots. He was the New England Patriots starting fullback in 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2016-17 including the 2015 and 2017 Super Bowl Championship teams. Zak DeOssie ‘07 is a two- time selection and two-time Super Bowl Champion (2008, 2012) for the New York Giants.
