This coming Sunday, July 21 at 2:00 pm will be the final liturgy at Our Lady of Consolation, Nemacolin. We have begun planning for this liturgy but hope that you invite others who have been involved in the life of the church here to come and worship with us. It can be a difficult time of saying goodbyes but also new beginnings, as with every at- tempt to celebrate resurrection. Out of death comes life. We hope that the new parish of St. Matthias can be that place of rebirth, and contin- ue the celebrations of our Lord’s presence in our lives. We mark an ending but a new beginning, come and celebrate. After Mass we will have a small celebration at St. Hugh Social Hall in Carmichaels. If you have any pictures or memorabilia that you would want to bring and share please do so. If you are interested in helping with this closing liturgy please feel free to contact Fr. Al or Fr. Francis at the parish office.

FINAL CLOSING LITURGY DATE FOR CHURCH BUILDING

We are one parish under the name of St. Matthias. It is an exciting time as we celebrate during these next weekends a Church alive in Christ. As with all new beginnings, there is also a passing away of the old. They can seem like small deaths in our lives and the closing of churches can seem that way. For many of us, as my home church will be one to close as well, it is a loss that hurts but as with Christ’s death the prom- ise is always new life. We need to focus on newness of life. To celebrate the movement from death to life we are scheduling masses to be said as closing liturgies for the churches that will not be used after the merging to one parish:

July 21st at 2:00 pm

Our Lady of Consolation, Nemacolin (Reception to follow at St. Hugh Social Hall, Carmichaels)

These should be celebrations of the life in faith they have provided the people of these areas. Invite those who have been members to come back for the celebrations and include an invitation to continue to pray and celebrate with us as we move forward as a new parish in the churches of St. Hugh, St Ann, St Ignatius and St Marcellus. As St Matthias was a new apostle to replace Judas, so we are to be the new apostles going out within our new parish inviting people in. May God bless us all!

The proposed new mass schedule (beginning the weekend of July 6/7) for the new parish is:

Saturday Evening 4:00 pm at St. Ann and 6:00 pm at St. Hugh

Sunday Morning 8:30 am at St. Ann 10:30 am at St. Marcellus

9:30 am at St. Hugh 11:30 am at St. Ignatius

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 FAITH LIFE

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!

As the new parish of St. Matthias we continue with four worship sites, having closed four worship sites. This poses some problems as to traditions and ministries from the various churches, which are still important, being lost or forgot- ten. We are hoping for people to step forward to take the lead especially for our liturgical celebrations. We are hoping to establish a liturgy committee that can help us remember the traditions of our churches and to help train the liturgical ministers of the future. We are looking for representatives from the various liturgical ministries and churches to help establish this committee. You can help with: music, decorations, readers, Eucharistic minister, bereavement ministries, servers and adult sacristan. If you are interested please call the parish office, at St. Hugh or St. Ann worship sites. Your help is what will allow us to move forward as a unified parish. Thank you.

PARISH OFFICES: The parish of St. Matthias will continue with two office sites. One at St. Hugh in Carmichaels and one at St. Ann in Waynesburg. The contact numbers remain the same: St. Hugh 724-966-7270; St. Ann 724-627-7568. Fr. Francis will be in residence at the old St. Thomas rectory and Fr. Al will be in residence at St. Ann.

Pray all ways, pray always, —Fr. Al McGinnis

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 7 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS July 25 — FEAST DAY OF ST. JAMES, THE APOSTLE

St. James is the patron of Spain, where tradition says his remains were taken. There he is called Santiago. Centuries ago the Spaniards built a shrine in his honor at a place called Compostela. Pilgrims from all over Europe visited it. They wore in their hats the shell of a scallop or cockle. The shell recalled that, before he was called by Christ, James worked as a fisherman. It also reminded the pilgrims how in later years the apostle James baptized new Christians. Pilgrims wearing the shell were granted hospitality wherever they went. There were so many of them that James is considered the patron saint of pilgrims. James and his brother John were the sons of Zebedee, a fisherman in Galilee. One day Jesus walked along the lake shore. Speaking to the brothers as they mended their nets, he invited them to come with him and learn to fish for human beings. Two men named James became apostles. Today’s James is called “James the Greater,” perhaps because we know more about him than about James the Less (feast day May 3rd). Whatever the reason, the James we remember on July 25th seems to have been a person who earned the trust of Jesus. With John and Peter, the Gospels mention James as a witness to some of Jesus’ miracles, such as the cure of Peter’s mother-in-law and the rais- ing of Jairus’s daughter, and was also present at the Transfiguration of Jesus. James was in the garden of Gethsemane on the night of the Last Supper. Oddly, though, the brothers James and John are often shown to be bull-headed. At one point Jesus gave the two brothers the nickname “sons of thunder” because they wanted to send lightning down on a town that turned them away. According to the 12th chapter of the Acts of the Apostles, James was the first of the Twelve to be martyred. Arrested in Jerusalem by order of King Herod Agrippa, James was put to death with a sword.

July 26 — FEAST DAY OF JOACHIM AND ANNE

St Anne was the Blessed Virgin Mary’s mother. According to early church tradition, St Anne lived with her husband, St Joachim, in Galilee before moving to Jerusalem. After St Joachim fasted and prayed for forty days in the desert, Angels appeared to them promising th a child. The child was the Blessed Virgin Mary. Their Feast Day is 26 of July.

Prayer to St. Anne and St. Joachim O Holy Mother and Father of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as parents, you guided and nurtured Mary and, under your protection and love, watched her grow in holiness. Through your faithfulness and goodness the Will of God was fulfilled; the fruits of your virtue and faith brought salvation to the whole world with the birth of the baby Jesus.

“The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.” (John 1:14). Most Holy Sts. Anne and Joachim, come close to us and guide our hand and our hearts in the way of virtue. Help us to parent our children and grandchildren with a gentle heart as you did. Show us how to raise our children in faith and bring our families into the Light of Jesus. Remain close to us and help us on our journey to salvation. St’s Anne and Joachim, we place our petitions in your hands and ask that you lay them before the child Jesus. Seek this, my favor [State your request…] but only if it be for the greater glory of God and the good of my soul.

Every Sunday at Mass, Catholics around the world hear 3 or 4 passages from the Bible. We end up listening to hundreds of passages from Scripture. Join us weekly as Dr. Brant Pitre takes us for an in- depth Bible study on the Gospel readings, connecting them with the Old Testament reading and Respon- sorial Psalm for each Sunday Mass. You will learn the meaning of passages, why the various readings were chosen and put together, and how the Old Testament reading points forward to the New Testament and how the New Testament ful- fills the Old. Understand the Biblical roots of the Catholic faith and how the readings that are given to us each week are meant to be applied to our daily lives, walking with Christ as Disciples of the Lord.

Why do we light votive prayer candles in church?? A person can only pray for so long. Lighting a candle serves to prolong that prayer beyond our presence in the church. The candle remains behind and symbolizes the desire for the prayer to continue. So when we light candles in prayer, our intentions remain present even when we are gone. Next time you pass a candle rack, help prolong others’ prayers by offering one for the inten- tions of the people who lit them.
