S/N: 600-2791-04 213M1236. Description: The Sun Sparcstation IPX is a workstation introduced by Sun Microsystems in 1991. It was designed to be an entry-level networked workstation. It is based on the SUN4C architecture, enclosed in a lunchbox chassis. It uses a Fujitsu MB86903 or Weitek W8701 40 MHz processor. Weitek provided 80MHz after-market "SPARC POWERuP!" (2000A-080 GCD) processors which worked well in an IPX but required a ROM update to v2.9. It has four 72-pin SIMM slots for memory expansion. The memory uses parity Fast Page Memory (FPM) SIMM's with speeds of 50-80ns. Slots can be filled individually giving a maximum of 64MB memory. Paired memory modules decrease access times via "bank interleaving" resulting in faster memory and overall system performance. Additional 32 and 64MB SBUS "Above Board" RAM expanders will fit and work in the IPX using the 8-pin J101 header which contains additional power and clock signals next to the DMA/Cache controller. The Sparcstation IPX also includes an on-board AMD Lance Ethernet chipset providing 10BaseT networking as standard and 10Base2 and 10Base5 via an AUI transceiver. The OpenBoot ROM is able to boot from network, using RARP and TFTP. Like all other SPARCstation systems, it holds system information such as MAC address and serial number in NVRAM. If the battery on this chip dies, then the system will not be able to boot. -

McNutt, Jr. Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory Laurel, Maryland, USA [email protected] ABSTRACT The current challenge of space travel is multi-tiered. It includes continuing the robotic assay of the solar system while pressing the human frontier beyond cislunar space, with Mars as an ob- vious destination. The primary challenge is propulsion. For human voyages beyond Mars (and perhaps to Mars), the refinement of nuclear fission as a power source and propulsive means will likely set the limits to optimal deep space propulsion for the foreseeable future. Costs, driven largely by access to space, continue to stall significant advances for both manned and unmanned missions. While there continues to be a hope that commercialization will lead to lower launch costs, the needed technology, initial capital investments, and markets have con- tinued to fail to materialize. Hence, initial development in deep space will likely remain govern- ment sponsored and driven by scientific goals linked to national prestige and perceived security issues. Against this backdrop, we consider linkage of scientific goals, current efforts, expecta- tions, current technical capabilities, and requirements for the detailed exploration of the solar system and consolidation of off-Earth outposts. Over the next century, distances of 50 AU could be reached by human crews but only if resources are brought to bear by international consortia. One of the two objects previously identified as protostars in N159 has an SED consistent with classification as a Class I young stellar object (YSO) and the other is probably a Class I YSO as well, making these two stars the youngest stars known outside the Milky Way. We identify two other sources that may also be Class I YSOs. One component, N159AN, is completely hidden at optical wavelengths, but is very prominent in 6 the infrared. The integrated luminosity of the entire complex is L ≈ 9 × 10 L⊙, consistent with the observed radio emission assuming a normal Galactic initial mass function (IMF). There is no evidence for a red supergiant population indica- tive of an older burst of star formation. The N159 complex is 50 pc in diameter, larger in physical size than typical HII regions in the Milky Way with comparable luminosity. We argue that all of the individual components are related in their star formation history. The morphology of the region is consistent with a wind blown bubble ≈ 1 − 2 Myr-old that has initiated star formation now taking place at the rim.
