We were uncertain what the response from publishers would be. However, within two hours of sending our first request for a donation, we received an enthusiastic reply. Our first request was made to a publisher in New England, and a representative from the company was interesting in helping our project. Identifiers, such as OCLC to records for the print publications— The types of errors commonly found numbers, ISBNs, or ISSNs, are useful a desirable feature—but contained other in vendor records fall into a number of categories: lack of completeness, noncompliance with standards, and inaccuracy of the records themselves. Errors in these areas affect resource discoverability and access; incomplete or inaccurate representation of collections undermines patron confidence in library services and generates frustration. The first potential problem area is completeness of the record set. The number of records provided may not equal the number of titles in the collection. Titles may be missing, or titles not associated with the purchased collection may be included. Sometimes a record will be included for each volume of a multivolume set: for example, individual records for state code volumes instead of one record for the entire state code as is typically the case for the print. If you do not want your library’s catalog and discovery layer to present results like this, it is best to pursue correction of this kind of problem before any more time is devoted to the record set. Record metadata may not be compliant with national standards. Figure 2: Correctly coded fixed fields within a MARC record as displayed via OPAC; these often control displays of information to the public.

Saying Farewell to a Classic

Goodbye to Westlaw.com

“I want my Westlaw Classic.” “Bugger!”

t is no surprise that some law professors were unhappy about the removal of Westlaw Classic from academic subscriptions this past summer. Some partners will no doubt Iexpress frustration on August 31, 2015, when the platform will retire for all accounts. But many of those same attorneys balked when they were first asked to conduct legal research on a computer, especially those who could not imagine trying to type! Then they grumbled about the switch to web-based products, bemoaning the “World Wide Wait.” It’s safe to assume that if asked today, none of them would prefer to return to dial-up or have their computers removed from their offices.

views from you

The 16th Annual Children’s Book Drive, organized by the Social Responsibilities Special Interest Section (SR-SIS), was held during the AALL Annual Meeting in San Antonio. The theme was “Remember the Books!” in honor of our host city. The 2014 recipient was the Transitions Program of the San Antonio Independent School District, which serves homeless students, students in foster care, and at-risk youth. Donations came for every age group, from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. AALL members donated $425 in checks, brought approximately 100 books to the conference, and bought 378 books through the Amazon wish list, valued at more than $3,300 total! Additionally, the SR-SIS voted to donate an additional $500 to the Transitions Program, and $100 was given to Aletheia Jones from Harvard Law Library, who provided the outstanding art work for the book drive. The Transitions Program was extremely grateful for the donations. As the senior coordinator wrote in an email when the book drive was in full swing, “The books are still coming, and they are terrific! We have already handed out some books to families and children prior to the end of the school year.” This was an excellent opportunity for our members to give back and to help children through the magic of reading. We encourage everyone to be just as generous in 2015 at our conference in Philadelphia! In the photos, Stacy Fowler (left), technical services librarian at St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, delivers books collected during the conference to M. Estella Garza, senior coordinator at the Transitions Program. Do you have a “View” that you would like to share with AALL Spectrum?
