INDEX TO PACIFIC NORTHWESTERNER, 1955-2012
This index is the first to cover almost the entire span of Pacific Northwesterner. The most recent previous index was prepared in 1996. It was the last in a series of four beginning in 1955, each covering a different span of years. The present index is not a cumulation of these indexes but is an entirely new work based on different indexing principles and a re-reading of the articles. However, if you already own the original indexes, keep them. They are still very useful and complement this new index. The principle used in the previous indexes, especially the last two, was based more on words on a page than on the over-all subject of the article. The present index, although including specific terms and names mentioned on at least three pages of an article, is based on the conviction that researchers are interested in the broad totality of an article as well as the narrow topics within it. Therefore, a general term such as “Frontier and pioneer life” is posted along with specific names and topics mentioned prominently within the article. Accordingly, for all topics, whether broad or narrow, paging given in the citation is for the whole article, not the pages on which a term appears. To use this index, find the topic you want. For example, if you are researching the flu epidemic of 1918, you will find three postings under that topic. One of them is: Flu epidemic of 1918: Knoll, When Knoll, the name after the topic, is the last name of the author of the article. The next word, When, is the first word of the title. To get the full citation for the article, go to: Knoll, Kenneth, “When the Plague Hit Spokane,” Vol. 33, No. 1, 1989, 1-7 Here is another example: Under the topic Vigilantes, there are six postings. One is Vigilantes: Gill, Montana Gill, Larry, “Montana Stranglers: Vigilante Activities … in 1884,” Vol. 11, No. 3, 1967, 39-43
