Chairman’s Chatter Good Afternoon and welcome to the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground for today's fixture against the unbeaten FC Glades Sporting. I extend a warm Paget welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Glades who have made the short journey from to be here today. Our last match saw a hard fought draw with Earlswood Town which means the Bears have now clocked up two clean sheets in two games. Analysis of champions and promotions winners across Europe's top leagues has shown that it is the teams with the best defences, rather than necessarily the top goal scorers that finish highest up the league. In the Barclays alone it has shown that the average clean sheet is worth 2.5 league points and it is these solid foundations from the back upon which Paget are built. Our defence is led from the back by our experienced goal keeper and captain, Peter Maguire, and for us to have someone of Maggy's calibre at the club is a great asset. The club has been busy in the transfer market over the past week and we are pleased to have completed deals to sign goal keeper Lee Paintain from Continental Star, who will provide much needed cover for Maggy. We have also completed the signing of highly rated defender Dean Crowley from Coleshill Town. Dean's former clubs show an impressive pedigree including; Stafford Rangers, Town, Heather St John and Brocton and his capture is a major coup for the Bears. On the injury front there is positive news that Marcus Brown is nearing a return to fitness. The return of Marcus to feature alongside Chris Sturridge-Packer, Kurt White or Reece Jacobs in attack shows what strength in depth we have across the park and great credit must go to our first team manager who has now assembled what must be one of the strongest ever step 7 squads. Martin has worked wonders since becoming first team manager late on during pre-season and I know believe we have caught up with our opponents in terms of preparation and the squad getting to know each other after we missed out on any real pre-season preparation time. This match sees us host the unbeaten FC Glades Sporting and I believe this match will be the biggest test of our progress so far as we look to move up the table. I encourage our supporters to get right behind the team during the good times, the bad times and the inevitable ugly times as we all strive to push Paget in the right direction and establish a football club which we can all rightly be proud of. Come on you Bears!!!

P.S. A big welcome to Kevin Pitts who has taken out a subscription to Paget News. We hope you enjoy keeping up to date with Paget Rangers throughout the rest of the season.

Simon says……. Welcome to this afternoons match against FC Glades Sporting who make the journey from Solihull area and result apart hope everyone associated with the club enjoy their visit today.

Reading recent back page reports are suggesting that the once mighty Manchester United might have to dig into their pocket to the tune of £370 million pound if their interest in Cristiano Ronaldo is to be believed. Quite how anyone can actually even consider paying such an astronomical sum of money which could wipe out the debt of many nations for one player is beyond me. If they sign him then fans will no doubt pay higher ticket prices and sit at the ground complaining about how much the player is being paid. Yet, if fans stopped paying such high ticket prices of around £60 to watch some Premier League clubs then these fees would be lower.

Attending a match the other week at an Evostik League ground I was amazed at the variety of boot designs that players now wear, it is bad enough that a player might wear pink or blue boots but I've noticed more and more players are wearing different coloured boots, red on the left foot and green on their right foot. At what point in the history of football did the end of the black boot happen, call me old fashioned but I much prefer the black boots of old.

Since moving down to the Erdington area from rain city Manchester, and joining up with Paget Rangers to help out on match days I have been pleasantly surprised to find that many football fans who follow Paget Rangers also come down and support their landlords Boldmere St Michaels. I also know a number who if both clubs have no mid-week game also offer their support to local Evostik League clubs Sutton Coldfield Town and Romulus. This is what I love about the non-league game; fans might have their club but just enjoy a good game of football and will support clubs in their local area

Enjoy the game.

Paget Rangers Under 21 team – recent results and upcoming fixtures

Match report: Coton Green 0 Paget Rangers 7 Midland Football League Division 2, Saturday September 20th 2014 Paget Rangers were in seventh heaven following a seven-goal demolition of Coton Green last Saturday. Still smarting from their defeat at Hampton the previous weekend the Bears attacked from the kick-off and Coton Green defender Sean Parker prevented both Sturridge-Packer and Morris from scoring early goals. However, Paget were soon on the scoresheet. After Shaw had fouled Carpenter, White saw his free-kick deflected by Bennett past Barnes in the Coton Green goal to open the scoring. On a rare Coton Green attack Scott Parker shot harmlessly wide and then when White was put clean through the Coton Green defence managed to scramble the ball away. Sturridge-Packer then saw his goalbound shot cleared off the line. But White was not to be denied as he doubled Paget’s lead when Morris squared the ball to him and he side-footed the ball beyond Barnes. The two combined again to make it 3-0 to Paget when White curled Morris’s pass over Barnes and into the goal. Sturridge-Packer then had a goal disallowed and Bond had to break-up a dangerous Coton Green attack. Sturridge-Packer and Morris also had chances to increase the lead as the ever-dangerous Jacobs tormented the Coton Green defence. Half-time Coton Green 0 Paget Rangers 3 Paget were soon on the attack in the second half and White fired the ball across the Coton Green goal but no team mate was on hand to put the ball in the net. After Cullen had replaced Carpenter, Bond stopped a Coton Green attack, passed to Bennett whose defence-splitting pass to White allowed him to chip the ball over Barnes to complete his hat-trick. Two minutes later Paget were 5-0 ahead when Morris lobbed the ball over Barnes into the empty net. Coton Green then enjoyed a period of pressure and Bond deflected Shaw’s cross for a corner which Styche headed wide of the Paget goal. Jacobs continued to cause problems and only a last ditch tackle by Coton Green substitute Barton stopped him scoring. Jacobs then shot wide when put clean through and Morris hit the post with Barnes well beaten. Sturridge-Packer was thwarted again by Barnes before Churchill showed composure when slotting the ball past Barnes for number 6. Jacobs robbed Gilbert but Sturridge-Packer couldn’t reach his pass and then Sturridge-Packer missed an open goal when played in by Jacobs again. However, Sturridge-Packer finally got his goal and Paget’s seventh when, one-on-one with Barnes, he slotted coolly past the ‘keeper. This four was a dominant performance by Paget and will give them confidence for future matches. 06 PAGET v FC Glades:Layout 1 02/10/2014 10:12 Page 7

Manager’s Notes The good the bad and the ugly, sounds like the description of an inept defence, but in our case it’s all good with another clean sheet last week. No one plays for a draw and the players put in a class performance against a strong Earlswood Town side. I can say in my opinion we are one of 4 very strong sides yet to emerge this season and results will now come. We have the right players in place to mount a concerted effort to gain ground on the leading teams. 25 points avoids any possible relegation and 63-68 points gains promotion, the focus this season is on the league and cups will come and go. They will not be a distraction to us as we forge ahead and attempt what I would say is the start of the season. What we have done in August and September would have been a pre-season in normal circumstances but we have made our way through it and now we look forward to a new era in Paget Rangers history. On the player front we have more targets for transfer as Rakeem Reid moves on to Nottingham University to study law. Good luck to him and congratulations on being selected for Nottingham University 1st team.

Match Report: Midland Football League Division 2: Saturday 4th October 2014 Paget Rangers 0 Earlswood Town 0 Paget Rangers were frustrated by their inability to turn chances into goals as they were held to a goalless draw by Earlswood last Saturday. Seeking their second home league win in a row Paget applied early pressure with White shooting wide. After a foul on Jacobs, who troubled the Earlswood defence all afternoon, Morris tried to set up Cullen but Earlswood cleared. Earlswood then conceded two corners in quick succession before threatening the Paget goal when Lyons’ shot was saved by Maguire. Carpenter was unable to connect with White’s cross and Bond was forced to clear when Lyons threatened again. In a first half short on quality, Jacobs’ continued to give the Earlswood defence a difficult time and just before half-time saw his shot deflected by a defender to Hancock in the Earlswood goal. Earlswood then enjoyed their best spell on the run up to the break and Fitzgerald missed a chance when he shot straight at Maguire.

Half-time Paget Rangers 0 Earlswood Town 0

Attacking the clubhouse end in the second half Paget immediately had a good chance when Sturridge-Packer was fouled on the edge of the box and Morris forced Hancock into a good save from the resultant free-kick. Jacobs continue to threaten and shot wide from Bennett’s dangerous corner. Maguire again had to save from Lyons before Davies shot wide when well placed. Lyons then hit the post after a swift Earlswood counterattack before Morris shot straight at Hancock. Maguire was called into action again as Earlswood pressed for the opening goal but a free-kick from Nolan came to nothing. Then Jacobs hooked Carpenter’s free-kick just over the bar and shot just wide as Paget mounted pressure on the Earlswood goal. Cullen shot straight at Hancock and Serzyko then denied Cullen as he looked to latch on to Bond’s through ball. In a frantic climax, Sturridge-Packer shot over after a sharp turn in the box, Morris forced Hancock to punch clear under pressure and with the last kick of the match Bennett saw Hancock deflect his goal bound shot wide. Whilst Paget will be pleased with their second successive clean sheet in the League, they were disappointed by their inability to find the back of the net. five 06 PAGET v FC Glades:Layout 1 02/10/2014 10:12 Page 8 Stats

Paget Rangers in the 1994-95 Midland Alliance – part 6. Paget’s win at Halesowen Harriers had moved them up to 6th in the league table, still 10 points behind the leaders who were now Stratford Town. Before league matters could be resumed, there was a small matter of a Birmingham Senior Cup match away at Sandwell Borough. Paget travelled into the Black Country on Tuesday November 22nd and recorded a convincing 4-1 victory at their league rivals to progress into the next round. Goals from Gary Williams (after only 2 minutes), Perry Mulvey, Steve Scott and Trevor Burroughs secured the victory. Buoyed by two away victories Paget travelled into Leicestershire on Saturday November 26th to seek to even the score with their F.A.Vase conquerors, Barwell. After beating Paget, Barwell had knocked Hertford Town out of the Vase and were eagerly awaiting a tie against Northern League Brandon United in the 3rd round. However, their league form had not been so good and they were in 15th position with only 3 league wins when Paget visited. Barwell had joined the Midland Alliance after finishing 12th in the Midland Combination Premier Division in 1993-94. The club had only been formed in 1992 following the merger of Barwell Athletic and Hinckley FC. Barwell were to play 16 seasons in the Midland Alliance before winning the league in 2009-10 with the highly impressive record of 36 wins in 42 matches, no defeats, 125 goals scored and 114 points accumulated! The following season they won the First Division South and spent two seasons in the Southern League Premier Division before being moved back into the Northern Premier League, where they remain. The Barwell match programme contained some interesting background information on Paget including the Central Amateur league table from 1949 showing Paget finishing 3rd behind Ibstock Penistone Rovers and Coventry Amateurs! Also of note is that one of the linesmen that afternoon was Kevin Friend who is currently refereeing in the Premier League and took charge of the 2013 League Cup Final! Paget produced a highly efficient performance running out 2-0 winners through goals from Venroy Scott and Brendan McCarthy at the end of each half. Paget’s next trip was a second successive Tuesday evening excursion to Sandwell Borough. This time league points were at stake at the Oldbury Sports Centre. Sandwell Borough were originally known as Highfield F.C., and later as Ashtree Highfield F.C. The club competed in the Midland Football Combination between 1948 and 1988, the Southern League between 1988 and 1990, the Combination again between 1990 and 1994, and the Midland Football Alliance between 1994 and 2001, when the club folded. Paget again defeated their hosts, this time by the narrower margin of 3 goals to 2. Paget’s scorers were Alan Hunt after 11 minutes, Steve Scott after 68 minutes and Brendan McCarthy after 84. Sandwell’s goals came through an own goal in the 89th minute and a last minute strike from Martin. The following Saturday saw Paget renew rivalries with Bolehall Swifts. Paget had already beaten the Swifts twice at Coles Lane and were eager to complete the hat-trick against a team third from bottom only because their goal average was superior to Stapenhill and who occupied the two places below them. However, Bolehall proved to be a stubborn opponent and Paget’s climb up the table was slowed by a 2-2 draw. In fact Paget had to come from two goals down after Steve Cartwright and Mo Powis had given the Swifts a two goal lead by the 28th minute. However, two second half goals from Perry Mulvey and Gary Edmonds secured a point in front of 110 spectators at Rene Road. Paget’s final away trip in this sequence was on Tuesday December 6th to Tally Ho to face West Midlands Police in another league fixture. We’ll look in more detail at West Midlands Police FC in the next issue when the return fixture is played at Coles Lane. Brendan McCarthy was once again on the scoresheet, netting in the 29th minute to win the three precious league points. This meant that by the time Rocester visited Coles Lane the following Saturday Paget were third in the league table, just three points behind leaders Knypersley, with a game in hand. Paget were level on points with second placed Stratford but with a poorer goal difference. In the next programme we’ll look at the four home games in the run up to Christmas.

Midland Football League round up.

This afternoon and tomorrow afternoon many Midland Football League (MFL) clubs are turning their attention to Wembley – or at least trying to take one step closer to Wembley by progressing in the FA Vase. Some our teams were knocked out in the previous qualifying round, as the table below shows, and others received exemptions to later rounds – Boldmere St Michaels to the First Round and Coleshill Town to the Second Round. But for the majority today is a key date in their season’s calendar. We take particular interest in the fortunes of two teams from our division – Aston and Barnt Green Spartak. Aston face a tough tie against City who beat higher ranked opponents in the previous round. Barnt Green Spartak have to travel to Southam who are ninth in Division 1, one place below Lichfield. Other all Midland Football League ties include Brocton hosting Kirby Muxloe, Coventry Sphinx entertaining Studley and Heather St. Johns at home to Rocester. The Wood versus Pershore tie will also guarantee another MFL team in the first round proper.
