his ministry other than his occasionally making commentary about it?

What role does sexuality play in the life of our politics and public discourse? And how has it changed over time?

Even our notions about what to communicate (or not) to our children have taken the odd journey of being both easily and explicitly accessible (e.g. online pornography) and powerfully secretive (how often have you [do you] talk about masturbation or sex in general with your children? With trusted members of your community or family?).

How much room do we make for sex as one part of the expression of affection, deep affection, between lovers? To this day, sex is considered a way to consummate, to seal, a marriage. I have personally observed men and women, use sex as a way to consummate a relationship. How many girls in all my time in youth ministry heard the words, “If you love me, then you’ll have sex with me…”?

And in the midst of all of this are the roles we ascribe to our sexuality, to our genders. How do we understand them? How do we teach them? How do we assume them? To this day, in some churches, women and men are role-segregated. Women are not permitted to teach, serve as pastors/priests, to govern. This is not on the basis of ability or acumen. This is on the basis of sex.

When we read these stories—generations, lineage, palace and familial intrigue—where do we find sex playing a positive role? Where do we find it being used in detriment to the people in question?

Over the centuries, artists have reimagined Biblical stories in their own time and context. Here are some examples. This practice serves to help us connect to the stories. How would you imagine Joseph’s story in a modern context?

Self simply fixing things sells short the complexity A central feature of the Biblical concept of the Bible is trying to convey. reconciliation is “relationship”: the restoration of Joseph’s reconciliation with his brothers and relationship. Our reconciliation with God is reunion with his father is a microcosm of God’s exemplified in our reconciliation with each other.

This, of course, means facing in a real way what live in Jesus Christ. The idea of reconciliation, caused our separation in the first placed and then, becomes a prominent theme throughout… what can be done to heal that rift. God is now introduced to humanity as the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. The In the case of Jacob’s sons, this is summarized in prominence of “Father” as a metaphor for God Joseph’s remarkable statement in Genesis 45: in Scripture points to the significance of God’s “Joseph said to his brothers, ‘Come closer to desire to relate to human beings in the most me,’ and they moved closer. Thus, reconciliation becomes It is easy, perhaps, to read this and come away the vehicle through which we understand that with the idea that God orchestrated the brothers we are not alone and God is close. Closer than acting on their jealousy of Joseph. But the we could imagine. further point Jospeh makes is that God is never absent, not even in the midst of our worse impulses.

Reconciliation, then, is not about God’s presence. It’s about the restoration of our relationship with God. To understand the extent of the restoration, you have to go back to Genesis 1:31: “God saw everything he had made: it was supremely good.”

“Christian living challenges many of the rugged individualistic assumptions of modern culture. It confronts the notion that we are independent, autonomous persons and that success depends on being able to live independently from others. To the contrary, the epistle maintains that it is through the church and Christian community that we ultimately recognize what it means to

In the biblical narrative, the period from the conquest of Canaan under the leadership of Joshua until the formation of the first Kingdom of Israel, passed with the tribes forming a loose confederation, described in the Book of Judges. Modern scholarship has called into question the beginning, middle, and end of this picture and the account of the conquest under Joshua has largely been abandoned. The Bible's depiction of the 'period of the Judges' is widely considered doubtful. The extent to which a united Kingdom of Israel ever existed is also a matter of ongoing dispute.

Living in exile in the sixth century BCE, the prophet Ezekiel has a vision for the restoration of Israel, of a future utopia in which the twelve tribes of Israel are living in their land again.

In the Christian New Testament, the twelve tribes of Israel are referred to twice in the gospels and twice in the Book of Revelation. In Matthew, paralleled by Luke, Jesus anticipates that in the Kingdom of God, his followers will "sit on [twelve] thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel". In the vision of the writer of the Book of Revelation, 144,000 of all the tribes of the children of Israel were "sealed", 12,000 from each tribe and in his vision of the New or Heavenly Jerusalem, the tribes' names were written on the city gates:
